As a rising star in recent years, game design has attracted more and more attention from art students abroad, and has gradually become a professional option for many students. And the professional strength of game design shown by colleges and universities such as ACCD and NYU in the United States also let more students see the charm of this major. Can games cross borders? How does the game industry cross borders? Today, let's talk about this topic.
Can games cross borders?
Many parents of students often look worried when they learn about the game design major: "What kind of game design does the child have to learn? Is this major valuable?" "How about the game design major? Is it really potential for development?" "Teacher, otherwise you can help me persuade the child? I think game design is still not reliable"
So, today, we will take "game x medical health" as the starting point, combined with the hot spots of the game profession in recent events, to talk about how game design "serves" medical health.
When it comes to games and medical treatment, it seems that they are two completely unrelated professional fields. I believe that even those who are used to hearing the word "interdisciplinary" may be more or less curious about the game developed by Akili and the game × medical treatment. However, USC Nantah University, which is going to give you an example today, has always had a major in game medicine. At this point, it is really different from the game design major in other schools.

Taking NYU as an example, the Game Center of NYU is very good in the game industry. The specially set game research and development center allows students to enjoy the fun of games here while developing games with a sense of substitution. However, despite this, the intersection of games and medical treatment is mainly based on specific projects, and there is no special specialty. Another example Art Center School of Design ACCD Entertainment Design This major is also diamond level in the eyes of students who choose game design related majors.
How does the game industry cross borders?
First, the game can not only cross border with medical treatment
Just as more and more schools and majors begin to take interdisciplinary education as their own educational philosophy, game design is not only cross-border with medical care. For example, in the following collection of works by Jingyi, a student of natural light, the four projects of this student are interdisciplinary interaction and installation art.
For example, this project called "Kungfu Mater" is actually one of the research directions of USC that we mentioned today - Sports and Exercise for Wellness/Sports and Health Sports.

In this project, Jingyi combined interaction design to create a game that can be used for sports interaction. Unlike other sports equipment or devices, this game is more portable, easy to install, and takes up less space. It can effectively improve the enthusiasm of sports and help people use the fragmented time to exercise, so as to relieve the pain or discomfort in the neck, shoulder, waist and other parts of the body and keep the body in a healthy state.
Also in Jingyi's collection of works, this card game called "Chinese Cuisine" combines Chinese folk culture to promote China's four major cuisines.

Second, interdisciplinary/cross-border is an inevitable trend
I wonder if you have ever felt that it is more and more difficult to define a discipline or specialty when we are learning about it. For example, the graphic design profession, from the current graphic design trends or designer works, we can see the shadow of many other disciplines. This is actually interdisciplinary and cross-border.
For another example, during the epidemic, many colleges and universities began to produce their own masks, such as Pratt and UCL. Most of the masks produced by these colleges are combined with art, medical, engineering, and product fields. While considering the prevention of viruses, they will also consider the applicability, interest, and portability of masks. It is also obvious to extend it into the collection of works.
When we take this idea to make a collection of works and choose a major, maybe we can open more ideas and find more interesting fields and possibilities. Yu Bochen also welcomes you to discuss with me at any time, share your creativity, and discover the charm of art and design together!
