Carnegie Mellon University BXA interdisciplinary courses, everything can cross the border? Today, what we want to introduce is the art interdisciplinary program of Carnegie Mellon University - BXA Intercollegiate Degree Program, which is jointly offered by the Academy of Fine Arts (CFA) with the School of Computer Science (SCS), Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences (DC), Mellon College of Science (MCS), and Engineering (ENG).

The BXA project combines different academic fields with art in a creative and visionary way to provide students with creative, technical, academic and practical skills needed for interdisciplinary innovation in a unique way.

   BXA Degree Course Introduction


"B" stands for "Bachelor", "X" stands for variable academic field, and "A" stands for art. The degrees include Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA), Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA), Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA), and Bachelor of Engineering Research and Arts (BESA).


In the Academy of Fine Arts, students can choose a major from architecture, art, design, drama or music to study with other colleges. In course learning, students need to meet the credit requirements of different colleges.


   BXA Intercollegiate Degree Program


  • Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA)


This degree provides an ideal technical, critical and conceptual basis for students interested in pursuing a comprehensive integration of technology and art, such as game design, computer animation, computer music, recording technology, robot art and other emerging media.

  · SCS optional major: computer science


  • Bachelor of Arts and Humanities (BHA)


This degree is designed for students who want to develop an interest in fine arts and pursue academic and artistic talent in the humanities and social/behavioral sciences.

  · Choose humanities and social sciences from the disciplines provided by DC


  • Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA)


This degree is designed for students who are talented and interested in the fine arts and natural sciences or mathematics, and have excellent ability to study both subjects at the same time.

  · Optional majors in MCS: biological science, chemistry, environmental and sustainable development research, mathematical science, neurobiology or physics


  • Bachelor of Engineering Studies and Arts (BESA)


This degree is specially designed for students who want to apply knowledge in dual fields to promote the development of maker culture in a novel and creative way.

  · ENG optional majors: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, material science and engineering or mechanical engineering.


  • Engineering and Arts (EA) Additional Specialty


The additional major of Engineering and Art (EA) is open to engineering students who are interested in art, but I will not introduce it here.


   Course Overview


BXA's interdisciplinary seminar in the third year will introduce art based research and cross media expression mode through the "Wunderkammer" model.


The BXA professional courses in the third year and the third year will provide guidance, structure, theory and research methods that the two selected majors rely on when they are integrated.


In the fourth grade, you need to complete a two semester research intensive graduation project. Graduation projects have various forms, including papers, performances, games, applications, devices, business plans, etc., to show how to integrate interdisciplinary elements of the curriculum into a comprehensive project.

Where do BXA graduates go? Build large factories and get high salaries


In the interdisciplinary context, students can gain a broader perspective and comprehensive ability, which is conducive to solving complex problems in the real world. Therefore, the real world also needs talents with interdisciplinary thinking and ability.


In the survey data of CMU official website on the whereabouts of graduates, the performance of BXA graduates in terms of employment rate and salary treatment is a full "eye-catching bag".


According to CMU's statistics on the whereabouts of the 2021-2022 BXA graduates (six months after graduation), 89% of the graduates are successfully employed or continue to study.

BXA project application strategy is coming!


If you are excited about the BXA project, how do you take action? The BXA program can accept new student applications and internal transfer.


   #New Student Application


To apply for the BXA project, you should first select the art college you want to apply for, and then you will be asked if you want to consider the BXA project and indicate your interest in the relevant BXA project. During the admission process, you will be considered as both an applicant of the Academy of Arts and a candidate of the selected BXA program. If you intend to apply for the BXA program, your application materials need to be reviewed by two colleges.

   • SAT/ACT exam


The optional examination policy of CMU will be extended to the fall of 2024, so students who cannot take the SAT/ACT exam or choose not to submit standardized scores will be considered for admission on the same basis as those who submit scores.


   • Language test scores


IELTS (or IELTS Online): The total score is at least 7.5, and students with individual scores of 7.5 and above will be considered. (See for other exam results)

The curriculum requirements of the Academy of Fine Arts are shown in the figure below. The BXA project also needs to meet the requirements of another college applied for.

It should be noted that for music and drama, BXA can only choose some majors. If you are interested in drama or music, you need to choose from the following majors:


• Drama major selection

Design, drama creation, production technology and management


• Professional choice of music

Audio recording and production, composition, music performance, sound theory and practice


   #Internal transfer


For students at Carnegie Mellon University who wish to apply for the BXA program, the internal transfer application process will be carried out in the autumn and spring semesters, and they can apply online. The College will review the application in October and March, and some majors will only consider applying once a year.


For all majors, you must complete the required courses before considering the application; Students who have selected BXA courses can also apply to change their majors, such as changing BHA to BCSA.


The BXA course integrates academic and art, creating 1+1> 2, which will protect students' artistic career. In terms of application for BXA courses, students can freely choose the combination of art+academic courses they are interested in, and can also apply or change majors after enrollment, which gives them flexibility and friendliness.
