Graduate students applying for illustration after changing majors:
He quit his stable job and turned to the art field with a large span. There was no foundation for illustration. At the beginning of creation, many difficulties could still be overcome one by one. His creativity was unconstrained, his self display was enriched, his sci-fi elements were combined with environmental problems, his care for overseas labor groups, and the unstoppable aging and death of human beings... How should he put them into the collection of works. Through 100% efforts and 100% trust in teachers, Yuchen has won the favor of famous schools and paved a "golden road" for studying abroad.
01. Throw down the "iron rice bowl" and carry the banner of studying abroad
I majored in geology as an undergraduate. After graduation, I worked as a programmer in the IT industry. Programmers are a good job in the eyes of most people, especially parents, and their salary is also considerable, commonly known as "iron rice bowl".
Painting is my hobby for a long time. In my spare time, I like to pick up the brush and draw something I am interested in, some illustrations and cartoons. I really enjoy the process of putting those unconstrained ideas in my mind under the brush.

I also thought that I would become a programmer safely, but after working for a period of time, I had a bold idea: I would go abroad to learn illustration.
In fact, at the beginning, I had a lot of concerns, because neither my major nor my work was closely related to art, and even the span was quite large; For painting, I only learned some sketches in a studio before, and some watercolors. At best, I can get basic knowledge.
I need to jump out of the "comfort zone" to try a new field for me, which is not easy, so I actually had problems. But now that I have an idea, I would like to try as long as it is feasible.
Some people may feel that it is really worthwhile to give up a secure job and life? I can only say that risks and opportunities coexist. When I really make a decision, I will stick to it and concentrate on doing a good job so that I will not regret it.
Besides, I can still use my grades to say: really fragrant~
02. The way to study abroad, if God helps
The first thing to do after making up your mind to study abroad is to find a collection organization. Because the collection of works that colleges and universities need to submit, such as painting assignments in peacetime, is very different; In addition, a series of processes, such as application for studying abroad, are also more professional.
After several field trips, I came to the natural light. Now I have been studying illustration in natural light for more than half a year, and I have really gained a lot. My growth rate is like a rocket.
First of all, the most intuitive feeling is that the teaching mode is different. Like when I was in the studio, the teacher basically assigned us what you want to paint today, and then followed the pictures to draw.
The teaching of natural light will pay more attention to personal ideas as foreign teaching. Have your own idea first, then try to draw it.
This is a big challenge for me. At the beginning, I will experience some changes in thinking and creation. You need to go through the stage from imitation to self combination of different things, and then become your own ideas. It is true that it is not suitable at the beginning, but it is necessary to go through this step to create decent works.

In the process of creation, the teacher will often urge me to emphasize that the progress must be guaranteed; Then creatively, more from the perspective of some of your own hobbies, will be more motivated to paint.
There are also some exercises about collage at ordinary times, which can exercise my good idea of combining effectively; Then the teacher will ask me to do some small sculptures, such as those made of clay, to practice my ability to express ideas. There are quite a lot of manual skills.
After this period of study, I have a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of illustration. Previously, what I understood as illustration was relatively narrow. I simply thought that it was to draw some illustrations, illustrations, posters and the like.
But in fact, the scope of illustration is quite large, including many, not only two-dimensional creation, but also installation, cross-border design, and so on. I have never touched these things before, which is an eye opener.
And then the impact on the mind is relatively large, because I used to be just a simple painting, and I never thought about the creative process. But in foreign education, the creative process is particularly important.
My growth may be reflected in the creation of the collection of works. In short, my speed is getting faster and more skilled. I finished the creation of the entire collection of works and a series of operations such as application in a relatively early time.
At present, I have obtained offers from many colleges and universities, and my language scores are also qualified. Maybe I was on the flight to Dream School when the article was published
03. What you like, you can do with your portfolio
Many science fiction elements are used for reference in my collection of works. Because I personally love watching science fiction movies, such as The Matrix, Terminator, and Blade Runner, which I have seen many times, satisfy many of my fantasies.
In addition, I also added many personal experiences. In general, my personal style will be more distinctive in the whole collection of works.
Like the first project I drew, I told a story about intelligent robots and the future destiny of mankind. The robot who has generated self-awareness and the human who is worried about creating uncontrollable species, who will be the final winner after the two PK; Or, can they coexist.

Through this work, I want to discuss such a speculative theme. Pollution and waste of resources are current global environmental issues that cannot be ignored, and are also the focus of many leading foreign schools.
Not only does it have the science fiction elements I like, but it also conforms to the research direction of the university. It is a work that I am very satisfied with. It is also my first work and faces the most difficulties.
There is also a project idea in the portfolio that comes from some of my personal experiences, including my original major and the work related to programmers.
For example, when I was doing geological related research, our geological exploration team would look for minerals on the grassland, analyze regional conditions and other exploration activities. At that time, including now, it was a very interesting thing.
Later, when I worked in the computer field, I also had some interesting things; It also includes my personal hobbies in guitar and music.
I extracted representative visual elements from these experiences, combined them randomly, and created several illustrations about "me". I want to show my personal information more vividly, interestingly and comprehensively in this way, and it seems that foreign universities are more interested in creating works that are close to personal life. 04. Suggestions for those confused with resigning to study abroad
Finally, many people have encountered the problem of choosing to study abroad after work, and they always have some concerns when making choices.
First of all, you really need to take a big risk, but you must make your own decision, weigh it and take the risk yourself. Therefore, there must be no heat in three minutes. If you are sure to do it, you must not give up halfway. No matter how difficult you are, you must not retreat. Now that you have chosen, stick to it!
As for whether your family can understand and support your decision, you need to communicate well. First of all, you should be able to convince yourself and analyze the advantages and disadvantages clearly; Only on this basis can you be sure to persuade your family members to support you in doing this.
In fact, I gave up my job and chose to study abroad to change my major to apply for a graduate student in illustration. It's really a smooth road. Although every family has its own difficulties, as long as you stick to it, all the seemingly obstacles will eventually become your motivation for struggle~Come on!
