Chengcheng said that he is a person who lives in his own world and has some social fears on weekdays. But perhaps it is this introverted character that gives her more space to be alone with herself. How long has the portfolio course lasted? Have you taken any basic courses?
About 30 class hours have been spent. Because I have many works that can be modified and used before, I directly press the name of the class times. I took part in the art examination myself and studied in Chuanmei Graphic Design. Although there are almost no illustration courses in the university, I still often draw and accumulate, so I didn't take basic courses.
How long has the portfolio been prepared? Where does the project inspiration come from?
In about four months, strictly speaking, there are four projects in total, but some schools require five projects, and I also take a commercial cooperation project to count. It contains two picture books, an animation and a device. Both picture books were completed after I had modified my existing works (including finished design).
One of the picture books was made in my first illustration class in my sophomore year. It is about the story of the bow head race. It uses humorous plots to satirize the bow head race phenomenon in today's society. Although it is not my favorite project, I also have a special significance because he began to have a strong interest in illustration.
Another picture book prototype is my graduation creation. I usually have a lot of brain holes and can make up some stories myself. The inspiration for the work is a story I wrote before, called Time Marathon, because people's perception of time is very subjective. When doing something boring, they think time passes slowly, while when they are happy, they think time passes quickly. So I wrote a story about people who can have a longer subjective time within a limited time under actual conditions. The story set up an instrument that can measure subjective time. According to this inspiration, my Bi Design thought of designing a medicine that can change people's subjective time. This medicine may be another form of life extension for terminally ill patients, but on the other hand, it means that long boredom loses interest in the world, which is a choice of life value. After reading this picture book to Mr. Xia, he gave me more inspiration on the theme and suggested that I consider this idea and story in the aspect of hospice care. I did a lot of research in this area, so this project came into being.
An animation project was a cooperation project between me and a plane student. We made a set of boastful exercises through stop motion animation. Inspired by the curiosity about the current phenomenon of Hanfu going on the street and attacking Hanfu, we did a lot of research and found that it was actually a very complicated problem involving all aspects. Finally, we decided to present this phenomenon to the public in the form of humorous animation, hoping to arouse public thinking.
The fourth project is an installation book, which uses a poem expressing sexual desire that I like as the content, and reproduces the feelings and artistic conception conveyed in the poem with different comprehensive materials, hoping to convey to people the idea of facing sex and their own ideas.
Which project is your favorite?
I like the fourth project most. My book content is Muxin's My Lust in succession. I tried many different materials to convey the artistic conception in the book by means of sensory experience, including electric heating film, light controlled sound, Slim, etc., and I made Braille with nail polish, so that all kinds of senses can help convey the picture, not limited to vision. As for my original intention of doing this book, it originated from the current China. The sexual liberation movement has been started and carried out for a long time. At the same time, due to the shackles of traditional concepts, the corresponding sex education has not been promoted, leading to a deformed social situation - sexual liberation and sexual repression coexist at the same time, then the consequences will only be diseases and surgical injuries with increasingly large data. I hope that through this book, I can convey the idea of facing sex calmly and facing myself.
Which project is more difficult in the process?
The first boastful project is the most difficult, because there is no experience in making frame by frame animation, and the process is also very time-consuming and laborious. Later, Mr. Xia told me how to design the subject figure more simply but representatively, which made it easier for me to complete countless paintings, and also avoided the problem of the character image not prominent in the background of real life after painting, so as to prevent the useless work.
Are there any interdisciplinary works in your project?
Praise drill is an interdisciplinary project, which is done together with students who study graphic arts. Because we must have a good publicity channel to promote our design of Praise drill, students of graphic arts have promoted the integrity of the project in the design and publicity of surrounding materials.
How do you understand the major of illustration?
I think in this era, most art categories are unlimited, and illustration is the same for me. The reason why I first came into contact with illustration and was attracted to it is that during the production of picture books, I realized the interest of being a "director". Every shot and story telling played a great role in rendering my story. Of course, illustration does not only refer to picture books. I hope my illustration can combine more elements to achieve more interactive purposes.
For example, in my installation book, I combine various senses, sounds, touch, smell, etc. I think the important task of illustration is story narrativity. People can understand the story or idea that the author wants to convey through this illustration. I think this is a more interactive form for the audience than pure art, a private work. Through my observation, summing up the phenomenon, and then expressing it, I can achieve the goal of making the audience resonate. I like this form very much. At present, I am also working on my own project, which is to collect stories of various strangers and draw one for them every week. For me, this is a channel for spiritual communication. I am not good at language expression, but I am keen on it.
Is there any difference between classes in natural light and at school?
The most obvious thing is that the communication between teachers and students is more flexible and rich. My undergraduate major is graphic design. In fact, the old professors in the school are not very interested in new ideas. I often feel that my creativity or inspiration cannot be used. But in the natural light, I can create and imagine freely, and the teacher will give me advice and guidance according to my ideas, respect my views, and work together to improve the ideas that excite me instead of telling me what you should do.
In addition, I think the teacher of natural light is very responsible, and will seriously answer any questions for me, so that I feel seen and have more confidence in myself when I am usually silent.
What is the most helpful thing for teachers to teach their works?
Ideas and logic help. My two teachers are different types. Xia Shuang often sublimates some of my ideas to let me know that there are different ways of expression. Teacher Li gave me a lot of space to do what I wanted to try. In addition, both teachers made me realize the importance of research before creation, which I think is very helpful for my later creation and learning.
Do you have any suggestions for students who want to apply for this major in the future?
The first thing is to know whether you really love it, and not to listen to others' opinions. At the beginning, I thought that graphic design was what I wanted because I heard that graphic design was "good for employment" and didn't understand it carefully. I regret it since I finished basic courses in my sophomore year. I can't continue to generate creativity for things I don't like. In addition, if you want to learn illustration, I personally think that you should not set limits on yourself, but try different ways of expression, in-depth study, there will be different gains.
Have you finally decided which school to go to?
RCA, first of all, RCA is the first school in the QS world ranking for six consecutive years, and I believe the teaching quality is guaranteed. In addition, I have always liked the concept of RCA. Their student works often cross the border and try new things. I like this atmosphere very much, which may be described as impractical and "artistic" by others, but I think it is at least my dream for me.
Did the teacher give you some advice during school selection?
In fact, teachers don't have biased opinions. They give me enough room to choose. But the teacher will tell me some graduate students' experiences have made me know the school better and know my own judgment better.
Did you encounter any difficulties in the application process?
RCA this year Royal College of Art The first batch of deadlines was one month ahead of schedule, which made my already tense preparation time even more tense. The time was very busy, but it was also very substantial. Fortunately, they were submitted a day or two before the deadline.
How do you feel about receiving an offer?
I am very happy and excited because RCA is known to be difficult to apply for, and I am lucky to be seen. During the college entrance examination, I was depressed and questioned once because of the failure of Yangmei, but this time I got the offer to step out of the shadow and have more confidence. In addition, I like the style of RCA very much. Being accepted may also mean that they appreciate my various attempts, and will have the pleasure of being recognized.
