When it comes to graphic design, you may first think of some paper prints, which are nothing more than posters, business cards, brochures... what else can be played on the 2D plane? Today, natural light summarized the training of interdisciplinary graphic design works of Yi, who applied for zero foundation. She drew inspiration from the works of two artists, expressed social problems with exhibition assisted graphic design, and got MICA Maryland College of Arts, SAIC Chicago College of Arts, CCA California College of Arts, OTIS Otis College of Arts and Design, RIT Rochester Institute of Technology, SVA New York School of Visual Arts Four of the offers from six schools have received 1300000 RMB in total. Now, let's review the application experience of Yi!

Training summary of interdisciplinary graphic design portfolio:
Yi is Zero Foundation Application for American Undergraduate Graphic Design When I first came to apply for Natural Light, the professional teacher made a very comprehensive assessment of Yi's basic ability. It can be seen from the situation at that time that there was a certain foundation of painting, but I didn't know anything about studying abroad in graphic design, and I still couldn't reach the level of American art colleges Collection of Graphic Design Works Basic requirements of.
Although the graphic design major is a little more pure art than other design majors, this major does not require students to have excellent painting skills like pure art, but needs to master the visual elements such as symbols, colors, graphics, and words to convey information and ideas. Yi students lack targeted and professional learning and guidance in their majors. Therefore, we have developed intensive basic courses and portfolio project courses for Yi students.
Graphic Design/Visual Communication
Graphic Design and Visual Communication Design are two concepts that students applying for undergraduate courses often confuse. The two majors are indeed very similar, but it can be understood that graphic design is more inclined to design in 2D plane, such as posters, books, logos, and fonts in daily life. The current graphic design has been different from the traditional graphic design, and is slowly developing towards multimedia such as computer terminal and mobile phone terminal.
Visual communication is more diversified and functional. It involves more visual perception and communication with viewers, that is, the interaction between images and people. After the guided communication, Yi found that what she wanted to learn most was that she was more inclined to the direction of pure art graphic design.
preparation in advance
The total course time for Yi to create a collection of graphic design works is less than one year. Since the foundation needs to be strengthened, she first took about 10 basic courses. Because I don't know much about graphic design, I teach professional courses from scratch.
In natural light, we usually have a comprehensive understanding of students through works and communication, not only to understand the basic level of students, but also to understand the scope of interests and areas of expertise of students. Later, we will continue to pay attention to students' personality and ideas, so as to make better guidance in the creation.
At Yi's Interdisciplinary Graphic Design Portfolio Training Process We didn't rush to work on the collection of works, or tell students step by step what kind of works can get good offers. Instead, it focuses on the long-term art learning of students, starting from improving the basic ability to lay a good foundation, and improving the cognition and understanding of comprehensive aesthetics and design thinking, so as to ensure the realization and completion of good ideas in future creation.
After the basic courses are completed, we will start to produce the portfolio. At this stage, we will fully adopt the overseas education model. I will guide Yi to express her ideas about the project. I will not interfere or limit her thinking, but discuss the best plan through the understanding of students in the early learning stage. Let students further develop their independent creative awareness and personal style, and exercise their independent creative ability, independent thinking ability, and design thinking logic in the process of continuous research and exploration.
Collection production
There are 4 items in the student's graphic design portfolio. Because undergraduates need to submit some paintings, half of the student's portfolio is paintings that use different media to express content. The other part is about graphic design, which is interspersed with an interdisciplinary project with illustration. Collections as a whole involve the exploration and development of professional basic graphics, colors, analysis of artists' works, typesetting, printing, concept expression, experiments, different media, etc.
The first professional project is Graphics and Printing. Yi found that he was good at using regular geometric figures in his creation in the study of the artist Klimt's paintings. The use of these geometric figures made the works show a strong sense of design and decoration.

In this project, Yi extracted the patterns, colors, arrangement and other elements from Klimt's gold foil series works, and reorganized them with new figures.
Then take the twelve zodiac signs as the main content of the graphic development design, through the graphic extraction of each animal's special parts, use the unified unit grid for geometric processing, and then combine the elements extracted from Klimt's works to carry out a new graphic design.
Finally, screen printing was used to visually present the graphics, and different color matching was attempted. Through this project, Yi learned a lot of new knowledge and learned about the whole production process of screen printing.

In the process of creating a collection of works, it is very important to highlight personal ability, show ideas, creativity and artistic quality. Therefore, we really put a lot of effort into the selection of themes.
After discussion, the theme of the second project is social phobia. This project is an interdisciplinary project with the major of illustration.
This project is a good experience for students, because this interdisciplinary middle school students not only learned the relevant knowledge of their own specialty, but also combined with the presentation form of other majors, as well as exercised students' comprehensive learning abilities such as thinking expansion, project explanation, experimental exploration and development, and material presentation.

The inspiration for the theme comes from the students' research findings that more and more people are suffering from social phobia. The creation purpose of this project is to show the worries caused by social phobia through humorous visual expression to attract people's attention to some people and problems.
In terms of design ideas, Yi made people see the psychological and physiological changes that social phobia may bring to people by creating an imaginary world in which everyone suffers from social phobia, and caused the audience to think.
In the imaginary world set by Yi, the background of this world is 5075 years. There are such people living in spaceships. They live in isolated small rooms. High technology allows people to meet their daily entertainment without communication. In the long run, people suffer from social phobia.
Because of a long time of no communication, people's mouths degenerate into a hole without teeth, unable to speak, and can only eat liquid food. People's limbs have also changed. Some people's limbs have become very long, making it easy to grab food and various entertainment facilities; Some people have thorns on their limbs to defend themselves against injuries caused by others; Some people become very small and hard to be noticed, so that no one will come to talk to them.
The final presentation mode of this project is a small exhibition, because we think it can show the works to the audience in different dimensions. At the same time, we hope to bring the viewer into the designed virtual world, so we create a sense of virtual and real shuttling in this space.
In order to achieve the ideal visual effect, Yi first used black cloth to cover the wall, giving people a feeling of indifference and depression; Hang the illustration in the air; Paste mirror paper on the back of the illustration, and the viewer can see his twisted face through the mirror paper; Put a mirror on the wall so that the viewer can see himself clearly through the mirror.
By watching the characters in the picture, their distorted faces and clear selves, we can get the feeling of transformation in the virtual and real world, and at the same time cause the audience to think: everyone suffers from social phobia, is this the future we hope for?
Next is the sharing of students' basic painting works. Since Yi likes cats, she was asked to focus on her own interests and use cats as the theme for painting creation. In the process of creating a collection of graphic design works for studying abroad, Yi combined the works of the Dutch printmaker Moritz Cornelis Escher, and made a further painting with the inspiration generated by the connection between cats and contradictory spaces.

Yi's other group of creative paintings are inspired by urban architecture. Through the combination of different painting materials and different elements, it shows the thinking of traditional architecture and modern architecture.

Yi didn't have any foundation in graphic design at the beginning, and his painting ability was also weak. However, all six colleges and universities applied for were admitted, and four colleges and universities received high scholarships, including Top 10 colleges and universities.
As a teacher, I am also very proud of my students and feel that her efforts have not been in vain, from the beginning of weak foundation in painting and zero foundation in design to making works recognized by many colleges and universities. At the same time, I hope Yi can also keep the habit of innovation, curiosity and continuous exploration in the future study, and gain more growth in the future study and work.
