Today, natural light introduces to you that Zihuan, a graduate student of Cambridge University majoring in Education, applied for a master's degree in illustration in the UK and received offers from Goldsmith College, University of Creative Arts, Brighton University, Cambridge School of Arts, etc. During her master's degree, she accumulated many ideas about children's education. How should these ideas be communicated and influenced by children? Children's picture books are a good way. Therefore, Zihuan's graduate student changed his major and applied for a master's degree in illustration in the UK. What are the highlights of ZHIHuan's second brush illustration works when he changes from his master's degree to his major in Cambridge?

Children's picture books are a kind of magical existence. When people go to the children's reading area of the bookstore, they often find a phenomenon: adults hold children's picture books in their hands and immerse themselves in the world of illustrations, while children are left to play with mobile phones; Although it seems funny, in fact, picture books have such magic power. They are the first books that everyone meets when growing up. They teach us some truth in light stories and build childhood memories.

More and more adults like to read children's picture books and look for profound insights in simple images. Now let's take a look at what stories are told in the works of Zihuan! From Cambridge University to art school, what impact did the education and study have on the collection of works? What feelings did she convey through art? What social problems about children are reflected through art? Let's take a look at her collection of illustrations~

BIRD WISH

There are four items in my collection of illustration works. The first item is a watercolor picture book called Bird's Wish. It tells the story of a Jewish girl who went to a Jewish concentration camp with her family.

A collection of professional works of British illustration

This story has always been my favorite subject, and I have paid more attention to this topic since a long time ago. Then I also saw many books and movies, and I was quite handy when making stories.

The teacher's help to me is mainly in the picture, which is very helpful for the richness of the picture and the arrangement of some elements of the picture. Then the teacher encouraged me to say that because the subject matter is heavy, many of the particularly realistic pictures can be transformed into more imaginative pictures.

At last, the teacher suggested that the characters in my book were cute, and that it would be interesting to design bookmarks and postcards.

So finally, I arranged it in a room and used the illustration elements inside to form a small exhibition. Then I made a small picture of wool felt for this exhibition and some leaflets to popularize the historical background at that time.

Collection of Illustrations of Cambridge College of Arts

We also learned from our usual consultation that many non art majors like art, but they have many concerns when they want to apply to art schools. First, they don't know how to make art collections. Second, they compete with art majors who have studied for four years, Zero basic application for studying abroad How can our students achieve their professional level?

But in fact, the reason why a person can become an artist or designer is definitely not a single factor and ability. Zhihuan once studied in education, which is also a zero foundation application for major transfer. However, if we find the right direction, it is our advantage to change our major. For example, she will have much more knowledge and ideas about children's education than art students, which happens to be very necessary for children's education.

The problem that Zhihuan met was that he did not have enough experience with the pictures when facing the art application collection for the first time, nor was he particularly clear about the criteria for judging the illustration collection, or even had no way to start.

In this case, the teacher first retained the good ideas of Zhihuan students, and at the same time, helped her optimize the shortcomings in the picture, so as to ensure that the admissions officer could see the students' basic abilities. Especially for illustration majors, basic skills related to painting are the core and basic requirements.

Secondly, in terms of the content of the overseas works collection, many students would think that the works collection=the collection of works before they created the works collection, sort out all their most excellent works at ordinary times, and then arrange a version to put in. In fact, this is not the case. The admissions officers of overseas colleges and universities have two most important points when inspecting student works, one is the necessary ability for admission, and the other is the potential embodied in the works.

We need not say more about the expression ability. The way to express the potential is the diversity of works, especially in illustration, because usually the works are all paintings. If the works are all paintings in one color, even if the style is very special and the ability is outstanding, the admissions officer will mistakenly think that the development direction of students is too single and there are not enough possibilities.

With the teacher's advice, Zihuan added more extended contents and forms of works in the illustration works collection, such as postcards, bookmarks, three-dimensional books, stack books, exhibitions, clay paintings, etc. The final works collection presents a rich and three-dimensional impression.

TELESCOPE

Then my second project is called Telescope, which shows the social phenomenon of left behind children in China. Because the theme was close to reality, I had to face this special realistic and heavy theme at that time. I didn't know how to start.

The teacher said that I could do a lot of research first, and gradually found the direction of my work in the research. Later, through a lot of research, I summarized three aspects of the most serious problems that left behind children face, namely, safety problems, crime problems and psychological problems.

Training for professional works of British illustration

I drew two more illustrations from each aspect, and finally completed six series of illustrations. The form of expression of this work is to present it in a box, making a picture that is a little like a large three-dimensional book, layer by layer, and then showing the social problems faced by all children.

During the creation of the collection, many students may be distressed Collection Research The students of architectural design, industrial design and interaction design in particular need very complex and powerful logic to support their projects. During the research period, new problems will be found and the previous ones will be overturned.

However, some students enjoy the process of Research because they can learn a lot of new things in the process to constantly stimulate new inspiration. No matter whether Research is a headache or a pleasure, this step is essential, because the portfolio is not to show the final results, but to let the admissions officer see the whole process of the project from scratch. Each college will emphasize the requirements for Research in the requirements of the portfolio.

We can see from the illustration works of Zihuan that each project has very detailed and complete research, such as which films and materials have been referred to. In this way, the projects in the works collection can have a solid foundation and exclude the possibility that the form and sensibility of the works are greater than the depth of the content. The content presented in this way is a complete works collection that meets the requirements of colleges and universities.

VOYAGE

The third project is called Sailing Journey, which was completed by Colored Lead. Then it is also a storyboard, which is completed in a wordless form.

It tells the story of a little sailor who took an adventure with his boat on the sea. But at the end of the story, there is a reversal, which is also the point I want to show by contrast. The last picture reveals its truth. This story actually happened in the scene imagined by a little boy when he took a bath in the bathroom.

Training for professional works of illustration

This story is ostensibly a story about a little sailor. In fact, it is intended to show children's naive imagination through these stories.

The presentation form is that I made it into a very small Xiaodou book, three of which can be opened in the form of organ pages, and the last one is a small fold of the book. It opens and the back is the big picture of the last bathroom. I also made a small box and four clay illustrations for this set of Xiaodou books.

ALICE'S FRIEND

The last project is called "Alice and Her Friends", which is a series of illustrations I drew with a grayish yellow tone.

It tells the story of Alice, a lonely little girl, and her imaginary shadow friend. The inspiration for this illustration comes from seeing a whale. Because its name is Alice, and its frequency is different from other whales, her voice has never been heard by other whales, so she is very lonely.

Apply for the major of illustration in Cambridge, England

What it wants to show is that some children imagine such a story of their imaginary friends because they were too lonely in childhood.

   Application experience sharing

When applying for the British illustration major, my suggestion is that you should follow your heart and express what you want to express most. in especial To study abroad after changing majors Students can use some of their previous accumulation to show their uniqueness, and finally hope that everyone can enter their own ideal school in the future.

Natural light has always encouraged students to pay attention to their own characteristics, and also believes that the best education is independent and free, inclusive of diversity and ideas, to guide students to become better themselves, to gain creativity and problem-solving ability in art learning, and to dig themselves and understand the world in art practice. Instead of using some so-called "shortcuts" to complete the application for utilitarian purposes. Whether you are a pure art student or a design student, it is applicable to follow your own heart.

For students who apply for studying abroad in other majors, what I want to emphasize is also to use the advantages of this major to expand the richness and depth of their professional portfolio. Previously, Natural Light had a student who studied digital media as an undergraduate and went abroad. She wanted to change her major to apply for pure art. She loved pure art during her college years, and accumulated some knowledge about programming and sensors during her undergraduate study. She will have many ideas in the process of creating a portfolio project. It may be difficult for ordinary students to realize these ideas, but after discussing with the teacher, she found that each link can be combined with the original profession. In this way, the whole collection of works can not only reflect the students' background, but also vividly reflect the students' potential in many aspects. This collection of works is the favorite collection of colleges and universities to study abroad for changing majors.

   Professional interpretation

We can see from the enrollment of the first Zihuan student that his major is Children's book Illustrations of Cambridge Academy of Arts and Children's Illustrations of Goldsmith. You should have seen a lot of illustration majors, but we didn't know that there were such subdivisions under illustration. We will briefly understand children's illustration by combining the introduction of these two majors on the Cambridge Art College and the official website of Goldsmith.

   Anglia Ruskin University

Children's book Illustrations at Cambridge College of Arts cooperates with professional teams of children's artists, children's book publishers and internationally renowned illustrators. The course aims to develop students' own personal vision, including the following five courses:

The first observation and experience is to improve the painting ability in observation and practice. Students need to choose their own theme and complete a painting project. The purpose is to enable students to develop the visual language that artists need most in the course.

The second course, The Sequential Image, since it is a major in children's book illustration, students must have the ability to tell stories with pictures. This course is to let students choose their own themes and produce continuous images combined with pictures and texts, which can be drawn by software or traditional hand, which can be novels or other forms of text, but must have narrative and theme, To explore the visual rhythm.

The third course, The Diploma Project, requires students to submit a complete set of children's illustration works, which can include picture books, animated films, posters, storybooks or other picture books.

The fourth "The Diploma Review" is a paper. It requires to submit an article of no less than 6000 words, and consider the depth of the work in combination with the historical background and theory of his own work and discipline.

The fifth Master's Project: Art and Design. Students will participate in practical projects in this course, exercise their team cooperation ability in the field of art and design, such as negotiation and management, and focus on some more professional issues in practice.

   Goldsmiths,University of London

Goldsmiths, University of London The curriculum of Children's Illustrations is similar to that of Cambridge University of the Arts, including Children's Literature and Cultural Diversity, Children's Book Illustrations Practice, Children's Publishing, and Children's Book Illustrations: Final Project. What is different is that it is set up in the Department of Education and pays more attention to children's culture and literature.

The core courses of this degree cover the interpretation, theory and practice of children's literature. There are also painting courses dedicated to learning the skills required for students to enter children's publishing houses or become freelance illustrators.

The above is today's interview about ZHIHuan's illustration works collection. From her application experience, we can learn how to use the advantages of the original major to apply for art majors, and also learn how to do a good job in research and how to enrich the forms of works collection. I hope the sharing of ZHIHuan can bring more ideas about works collection to everyone, Apply to your ideal college~
