Today's natural light brings you an interview with a student who applied for American graphic design across disciplines. After graduating from English, she not only brought the elements and concepts of her original major into full play, but also expressed her understanding of graphic design into every gap in her work creation. These wonderful combinations also brought her wonderful results like chemical reactions, The American Master of Graphic Design who changed his major was accepted by CalArts California Academy of Arts, ACCD Art Center Design Institute, SAIC Chicago Academy of Arts, Pratt Pratt College of Arts, CCA California Academy of Arts, and the Grand Slam offers from five art schools.
Summary of the interview for Luyao's master of graphic design in the United States:
1. From English major to graphic design, the design evolution theory of top students
Rigorous grammar and expression are the impression and concept of most people on English. When this major encounters graphic design with visual effects, what kind of combination will Luyao's students become? Is it better to be "organized and framed"? Or is perceptual visualization preferred? The two seemingly contradictory majors have become a wonderful combination of students from Luyao.

Like most of the zero foundation students who applied for major transfer, Luyao also experienced confusion and choice before preparing his collection of works. He did not understand the art design major and had no basic knowledge. Therefore, after preliminary communication with the teacher, we determined the first step of the course - building basic cognition and basic concepts of art design.
By cultivating students' mastery of basic skills, Luyao can simultaneously assist them in explaining basic design knowledge. In the process of combining practice and specialty, Luyao can acquire personal comprehensive aesthetic literacy and basic cognitive system of graphic design.
In the early stage of basic courses, the teacher did not directly teach theoretical knowledge points or PPT, but guided her self perception and formed a professional understanding through constant quick brainstorming and some creative divergent small projects.
For Luyao, each of these small projects is an accumulation of ability, and it is also a break in thinking consciousness. In this process, students of Luyao also gave full play to their own advantages, organized, self-management consciousness, actively communicated with teachers, and were fully prepared to interact with teachers every time.
Q: How long has your master's portfolio of graphic design course lasted?
"The collection of works has been completed for more than a year.
The main reason is that the basic courses have been taught for a long time, with 25 classes in total. Because when I first came to natural light, my understanding of graphic design was very simple and had no foundation, so after communicating with the teacher, I decided to help me lay the foundation through 25 basic courses.
During the basic course, my teacher actually brought me into contact with specific majors. My professional teacher, Miss Pan, would arrange various small projects for me to complete and lead me to analyze many related works. Through the accumulation of so many basic courses, my understanding of graphic design has been much broader and deeper, and my skills have also been greatly improved. Therefore, when entering the graphic design portfolio, the space for playing has also become larger and wider. "

2. Every work is a challenge, and every challenge is a gain
Interpret coffee brand with the concept of "chemistry"? Express your understanding of new technology and new materials by conceiving a clothing brand? Combine the original professional English for language transformation? Visualize verbal expression? When graphic design met Luyao, everything seemed to stimulate a magical and violent chemical reaction!
From the creation theme to the final landing of a work, typesetting into the collection of works is a comprehensive process that requires "preciseness+creativity", that is, there are certain requirements for students' logical thinking awareness and multi-dimensional idea progression, and there are also high restrictions on students' creative divergent ability.
Especially in the process of graduate application, we all know that, compared with undergraduate applications, graduate applications tend to place more emphasis on the professionalism of students themselves. These works are reflected in whether students can independently complete a complete project and whether they have a multi-dimensional thinking and creation system.
After 25 basic lessons, Luyao started Portfolio Coaching In the early stage of the course, both the teacher and Luyao found that in the construction of creative inspiration, because the inspiration is still fragmented and immediate, it is difficult to really implement many ideas in concrete implementation.
At this time, in order to help Luyao students better clarify their ideas and identify their own creation goals for the collection, the teacher will immediately carry out critical review with Luyao students at the end of each link, and give feedback directly.
In such a fast and challenging learning atmosphere, Luyao's professional ability and comprehensive thinking awareness are also constantly improving.
Q: Would you like to share your collection of American graphic design works with us?
"My collection of works includes 7 projects in total. Today I will mainly share 5 of them with you.
My first project is the visual image design of a clothing brand, which is my fiction. The inspiration for this project comes from my usual concern and thinking about clothing brands. I like Hussein Chalayan and Iris Van Herpen, two fashion designers. They often incorporate some new science and technology into their clothing design works. These science and technology have brought revolutionary effects on the appearance, concept and function of clothing.
I think their ideas and designs are very interesting, so I first created a fictional clothing brand in this project and named it "FORMATE". The idea of this brand is to explore the impact and change of technology on the form of clothing, which is why I choose such a name for this brand.
In this project, around this clothing brand, I designed a series of visual works, logos designed based on the brand concept, and a set of fonts. From the characteristics of fonts, I used a variety of extension forms for visual system design.

My second project is called "TRANSLATING", which is related to my undergraduate major. At the beginning, I thought about using abstract graphics to help people understand and understand the differences and connections between Chinese and English.
After preliminary analysis and a lot of research, I identified six basic characteristics of Chinese and English. When thinking about their visual forms of expression, I found that three-dimensional images are the most appropriate way of expression. Therefore, I designed a series of three-dimensional graphics, and used dynamic images to represent and record the change process of fonts from Chinese to English, and used this form to express the translation process of Chinese and English.
Compared with the transition of static images, this form is more interesting and visual expressive. While showing the differences between Chinese and English, it can also show some interesting connections between them.
As a whole, this project is a relatively academic and theoretical work. If it is just a graphic presentation, it is difficult for the audience to really feel and understand its meaning. So I finally decided to make this project into an exhibition and design a brochure as a guide manual. The viewer will hold the guide manual and look at the six dynamic posters. The text in the manual and the graphics in the dynamic posters will cooperate with each other to help people understand the differences and differences between Chinese.
The three-dimensional dynamics used in this project is actually a technical field that I have never touched before, which is difficult for me. So at the beginning, I didn't dare to try this method easily, so I even had the idea of not continuing this project.
But my professional teacher has always encouraged me, hoping that I can overcome these technical difficulties and obstacles. Finally, with his encouragement, I tried to do it, and in the process of "trying" and "learning", I found a breakthrough and completed the project.
The third project is to redesign the image of the coffee brand Coffee Academics. The original visual image of the brand is monotonous, so it can not show the brand's "academic, experimental, rigorous" brand tonality.
After some brainstorming, I decided to use the concept of "chemistry" to transform the concept, rebuild the brand of Coffee Academics, extract various symbolic elements in chemistry, such as the periodic table of elements, chemical equations, chemical instruments, and chemical experiments, and use them in logo design and visual system design.
In this way, the brand image can be combined together, and the visual form can become diversified without losing close contact. For consumers who enjoy this visual system, there will be a unified and profound impression and experience of brand spirit and concept in the whole consumption process.

Next, the fourth and fifth projects are two smaller ones. Let's start with the fourth project, which is also related to my undergraduate major. I wrote a short article in American literature class, which analyzes the writing skills used in a literary work.
The inspiration of the fourth project actually comes from here. In this project, I try to use a very unified visual language to display my short article.
The creation opportunity of the fifth project comes from the summer course project I participated in in natural light. At that time, I participated in a book art themed studio. I made further improvements based on the projects I did in the course. This book uses photography to explore the space, time and interaction of books. "
Q: Which work in the collection of American Master of Graphic Design is more difficult to transfer to another major? Why?
"Basically, every project is very difficult... It's just that the difficult links and places are different. Sometimes it's in the concept conception; sometimes it's in the visual method of expressing the concept; sometimes it's in the technology of realizing the vision.
Because my professional teacher has always encouraged me to try different things in each work, so for me, in fact, each project is a new learning and challenge, and there will be difficulties. "
3. Every bold attempt and breakthrough will be "prepared" for a certain moment in the future
Just like the butterfly effect, every effort will become the "best" for you to surpass others at a certain moment in the future.
Go out of the existing thinking pattern and help yourself understand graphic design with the original professional advantages. Through continuous communication with teachers, we can sort out ideas, break through bottlenecks, and solve each problem with targeted patience.
When I first came to the natural light, I was unfamiliar with my major and didn't understand it, which made Luyao dare not try easily. Even in the training stage of the works collection, I thought about giving up.
However, every time you break through yourself and walk out of the existing comfort zone, it gradually becomes the foreshadowing of Luyao's future projects.
For example, in the summer course of natural light, a book art summer studio became a creative inspiration of Luyao students. From the beginning when he dared not do it, to the later when he put his heart down and tried it boldly, every bit of progress made Luyao's skills and professional application more excellent.
When encountering bottlenecks, we should constantly communicate with teachers, gradually sort out our thoughts and ideas under the guidance of teachers, sort out the "chaos" in our thoughts, and get out of the bottleneck through analysis and thinking again and again.
Q: How does the teacher guide you during these works?
"At the initial stage of each project, I often have many ideas and inspirations, but they are particularly" miscellaneous "and" chaotic ", because they are very small and" bright "ideas, so when thinking about specific plans, they often get stuck in the bottleneck.
Whenever I encounter a bottleneck, Mr. Pan will help me sort out my thoughts, grasp the core, and let me form a clearer direction. Then I will look back at my works and ideas, and think again.
In addition, sometimes I can't make accurate judgments about what I do, but the teacher is very experienced and accurate. Every class will let me know whether my work has reached an ideal optimal state, or what is insufficient, and needs further optimization and improvement.
Sometimes, even if it is a link or a part, I will make multiple versions of "plans", and the teacher will bring me a specific analysis of each plan, discuss the feasibility of each plan together, compare with each other, and see which is better. "
Q: Did you participate in any activities during natural light? Is it helpful for the creation of works?
"Yes, when I first came to the natural light, I took Mr. Xiong's summer book art short-term class, which was also very helpful to the collection of works.
At the beginning, when I first came here, I had no contact with the art and design major, and my foundation was relatively weak. My thinking was somewhat imprisoned. Facing the book art, which is a very novel thing to me, I was really confused, and basically did not know how to create.
But after two classes, my mind was opened up a lot, and I realized that books were not only those in all directions I saw in the bookstore, but also in various shapes and materials.
At this time, in fact, I began to break the thinking pattern. With the help of the teacher, I boldly made a lot of interesting little works. One of them is to explore the space and time of books. This work has been improved and put into Graphic Design Study Abroad In the portfolio, as a small extension project. In short, this course is very interesting. It has opened my eyes and my brain. "
Q: Compared with the natural light and the school, do you think there is a big difference in teaching?
"I think there is a big difference.
First of all, because I didn't major in design as an undergraduate, although I also majored in visual communication as a minor during my undergraduate period, the school's curriculum is relatively standard, the content is relatively simple, and tends to explain some basic concepts and skills. There is not much space for practice, self-examination, and creation.
So when I arrived at the natural light, I really started the systematic professional study of art and design. In the natural light, one thing I feel deeply is that my teacher did not just throw the theory directly to me in class, but explained and analyzed it to us.
The teacher is teaching in a guided way, from the beginning to the end, not telling me how to do and think every step. Here, every student needs to think and explore independently. I think this kind of teaching mode is really able to let students get training in their majors. Only when students have their own ideas and understanding, can they better and more profoundly understand the major they choose, and can they truly master the major and ability. In the process of learning, we will gain a lot of "ability", not just to complete the portfolio, or apply for school.
In addition, the teacher will not "command" you and set limits on you, and will not require us to achieve what results, but will communicate and discuss with me. For example, every time I start a new project, the teacher will re understand what I am interested in and what new ways and means of expression I want to try in this project, instead of unilaterally assigning me a topic to complete his requirements. "
Q: Finally, do you have any suggestions for students who choose this major in the future?
"Graphic design is a subject that covers a wide range of fields, including various forms and styles, and the styles of each school will be very different. So if you choose to apply for the graphic design major, you'd better have a clear target school. When you set your own goals, you can learn about this school from all aspects, and understand its requirements and preferences for the collection of works.
If you have not yet determined your target university, I would recommend that you balance the two aspects of commerciality and academic experimentation. In this way, your collection of works will be applicable to a wider range of art schools.
In any case, the works must have certain uniqueness in terms of concept or visual expression. You can contact more about your knowledge and interest in other subjects, as well as some topics you usually focus on thinking about; In addition, I also recommend that you try a variety of media and forms. No matter whether you have contacted them before, you can challenge them. " about Luyao's This is where you can share your master's work collection of American Graphic Design.
