This IAAC summer course will discuss a series of related issues in the context of the eastward expansion of Beijing CBD. IAAC summer courses will research the urban development into a complex and multifaceted model that changes over time to observe its growth, change, evolution and transformation.
Through a series of latest open source design and construction technologies, we will study how to establish a controllable dynamic urban model and make it interact with the designer's design intent, so as to achieve the best running in result in continuous iteration and feedback. In the course, students will select a specific community in the east expansion area of Beijing CBD to study the historical evolution of the community, community operation and life, population migration and composition, spatial growth and evolution, etc.
It will also use the most popular big data, site scanning, VR/AR, 3D printing, interactive construction and many other new open source technologies to build an open source city model! The latest technology and thinking of architecture are all here!
This city model is not a simple model! The model dynamically combines the needs of the community with the internal horizontal communication mechanism, and establishes a direct relationship between community life and space renewal.
This course organized rich and open academic activities, and created a series of seminars jointly attended by designers, engineers, technical experts and community update participants to discuss the urbanization of open source technology. When it happens, the city becomes an inspiring space: open source technology becomes the DNA of city construction, and every citizen can participate in this process through individual needs and wishes.
This process will surpass any human settlement behavior. It will change the future organizational form of the city through joint construction, rapid information flow, continuous top-down management institutions and bottom-up residents' participation.
Course structure
This summer course is a gradual process from simple to deep, and the intensity is gradually increasing. It is guided by teachers from LCD and internationally renowned visiting scholars all day long.
This is a two-week work camp, focusing on the rapid response and discussion of design to the current advanced design technology and hot city topics. Students will learn theory, code, design and construction system through a series of high-density introductory courses, so as to lay the foundation of design methods and concepts.
Then, through the field study of the CBD east expansion area, determine the design theme and develop the corresponding design scheme. Students will design multiple and recursive concepts and build prototypes through site research, design concept setting, code modeling, performance optimization and simulation.

Follow up module 2
The second module is a six week studio research course (July 22 to August 31, 2021), focusing on in-depth and systematic research on urban issues and open source technology.

The first week of this course will be taught jointly with Tsinghua University Summer Camp in the form of Joint Studio. Xu Feng graduated from Tsinghua University, and then went to AADRL, the Architectural Institute of the British Building Alliance, to pursue advanced studies.
