In the 2019 QS World University Art and Design Ranking, the Royal Academy of Art ranked first in the world; In QS World University Architecture Ranking, the architecture major of University College London ranks first in the world; Our hero today is very powerful. He applied for studying in British architecture and won the offer of these two top art schools directly with his excellent collection of works! Not only that, he has won the offers of Manchester Institute of Architecture, the 9th place in QS Architecture in the world, and AA Architectural Alliance College, University of Newcastle, and University of Nottingham, the world's top architectural schools!
Zhang, a student, applied for studying in the UK in architecture. Admission: University College London University College London ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART, AA School of Architecture, University of Newcastle, Manchester School of Architecture, University of Nottingham.
Zhang, a student from Chengdu Campus, made a brief comment on himself: "Not painting, or on the way to painting". At the beginning, he was at a loss about how to make a collection of works, gradually mastered the method of making a collection of works, and now has a new feeling and understanding of architectural design. He said that these gains are inseparable from the guidance and communication of natural light instructors.
During the learning process, Zhang has participated in many design competitions from small bookstores, residences, kindergartens, to large art museum high-rise designs, as well as large and small design competitions. These experiences can not only self check the learning effect, but also find out the direction for the next step of self-improvement, and finally, present your own personal advantages in the works!
Interview of Zhang's application for studying abroad in British architecture:
Q: Congratulations on winning the Grand Slam of 6 schools' offer! How long has your portfolio course lasted? Do you have basic courses?
I haven't taken basic courses for 10 months~
Q: How many works have been done in the collection?
A total of 4 projects have been done, plus a design competition for the Star Plan that I participated in. The project is designed from small bookstores, residential buildings to kindergartens, art galleries, and finally a large high-rise design.
Q: So the experience is quite rich. Would you like to share these works in detail?
residence
"Shared community" is a combination of city and countryside, history and reality, chaos and order, creativity and mobility. The project repositions the community as a gathering place for people with different life concepts.
The project base is located in the airport campus of Southwest University for Nationalities, which is a resettlement area for relocated farmers. At present, the district has become an important living service supporting place for teachers and students of Southwest University for Nationalities and nearby residents. At present, the residential part of one of the buildings is selected to be reconstructed into an independent small residence. The ground floor is still a commercial building, and the upper part is a residential building. However, due to the harsh environment and the lack of certain public space, the area cannot meet the daily communication and interaction needs of residents, resulting in apathy of neighborhood relations.
Through research, we found that most of the residents are tenants, who spend a lot of time at home, and mainly pass the time through their hobbies. Therefore, this design embeds a large number of public spaces in the form of codes O and 1. Public spaces and private spaces are combined in different forms, while retaining the existing community buildings. Stimulate the new vitality of the community by implanting different public spaces.

At the same time, the height of a single building is also controlled at 4-5 floors, so that the block combination presented by the new building can be better hidden in the busy street. The first floor corresponds to the business and surrounding environment, while the other floors use the combination of public space and private space to strengthen the communication and interaction between neighbors and further solve the interpersonal problems of the existing community.

kindergarten
The project site is located in the old city of Xi'an. The city wall of Xi'an is a relatively complete one preserved in China. Since ancient times, the city wall has the function of defending the enemy and protecting civilians, but sometimes the solid city wall has hindered the communication and development between each other. The exterior of the building is also the same as that of traditional Chinese architecture, with solid walls around it.
With the development of society, the solid wall has lost its original function. We need to open the closed wall, eliminate the boundary of the wall, and let people have more opportunities to communicate with the outside world. Especially in kindergartens, all children have just left their homes. We need to establish a borderless space, so that children in kindergartens can communicate with each other, communicate and create, so that children can grow up healthily in kindergartens.

High rise design
As an area with high population density, Tianfu Square has been affected indiscriminately in the urban expansion. The building standard is wrong in speculation, and is not a reasonable result of the research on urban demand in this area.
Therefore, the operation possibility of exploring a more coherent model in the urban center is a model. It advocates the management of territory and requires the sale of land, which is the most valuable property; This is the skyscraper typology that has become a relevant number, absorbing the anxiety and needs of most people. This element will be able to meet urban needs without affecting the Territory's natural resources. The successful horizontal replication skyscraper model of the twentieth century must be changed.
For this reason, I will focus on the preliminary theory of verticality, that is, to copy and expand all the possibilities that occur on the ground. This tower will no longer be the only private dynamic element. Chengdu is a typical public open city. Skyscrapers explore interesting ideas that bring the complexity of streets and all levels of the city into the vertical. The main investigation of this project is to understand the relationship and role of private and public space in skyscrapers. Here, I use a spiral system, in which the public space (i.e. different types of streets) forms a circular structure. Private space hangs on this structural element. This "reverse street" system allows direct contact between the public and private, while allowing sufficient separation to grant the required privacy.

Art Museum Design
The building is located at the junction of the eastern suburbs of Chengdu. A large number of new media and traditional artists are active in this area, but there is no corresponding space to meet their artistic needs. Therefore, in order to break the limitations and oneness of traditional art museums, the space is divided into two parts by adopting the concept of interweaving design, combining traditional art with new media art.
At the same time, the building adopts the traditional wooden structure, called "skeleton". The building is its frame. Traditional wood structure is not only a tribute to traditional art, but also a response to new media art. The large-span exhibition space enhances the richness and flexibility of the space experience of the art museum. The bottom-up space experience is a respect for the "backbone". The diversity of the art experience area can not only provide artists with creative space, but also attract different people to appreciate it. Art Museum, Art Tour.
Star Project
The project is located in Zhaojue Ethnic Middle School, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, which is a public welfare library. The reading room is equipped with high-tech equipment, which not only provides children with a good reading experience, but also provides them with a comfortable space for discussion and communication. The virtual reality interaction room aims to encourage them to continue to study hard and explore actively.
In terms of architectural language, we try to integrate design language into local historical and cultural traditions. In the traditional lines of the Yi people, we extracted the idea of "sun" in line with the design concept and simplified it into the most basic component unit. Through the repeated combination of different forms and different quantities of this simple composition unit, a building and its required components are gradually formed.
Therefore, you can split and combine buildings without leaving the cloud. Low single component cost, modular production mode and diversified interactive experience also realize the economy, practicality, interest and organic nature of our design strategy. We should continue to innovate, simplify, and resonate with people and buildings around us.
Q: Each work has its own characteristics. Which one is your favorite?
Each project has its own favorite points, but the second small residential project should be the favorite. Although it is a single design, I have made it feel like planning. At the same time, this project has finally evolved into my own graduation design.
Q: Which work is more difficult in the process? How does the teacher help you solve problems?
It should be the first art museum project. At that time, I was at a loss to make a collection of works, and I didn't know how to start. Thank Mr. Zhan in real name! Although Mr. Zhan and I had some time difference at that time in the UK, he still communicated with me on time about the progress of the project, told me a lot of methods for making work collections, and even served as a software assistant to help me understand and draw the project in many ways.
During the study of this project, I gradually mastered the method of making a collection of works and kept learning the cases of excellent architects recommended by Mr. Zhan, which gave me a new feeling and understanding of architectural design.
Q: How do you understand this major?
Architecture is an endless lifelong course, which makes me study and explore forever. My passion for architecture keeps me in a strong subjective aesthetic and individualistic style. I think the significance of the existence of architecture should be more reflected in people themselves. A building, old or new, serves the needs of human physiology and psychology.
Q: Is there any difference between having classes in natural light and having classes in school before?
The biggest difference between learning in natural light and school classes is that it is more free. There are not so many rules and regulations when doing each project. In the early stage, though you can let yourself go, the teacher will share corresponding cases and ideas according to your ideas and thoughts.
At the same time, students of different majors can also be contacted in the natural light class, which is a process of learning architecture in a diversified teaching environment. You can also learn about interior design, photography, etc. It can be said that it is a small art school.
Q: What do you think is the greatest help to the works collection in the teacher's teaching?
With confidence and knowledge, I would like to thank Mr. Zhan and Mr. Yang for the production process of the collection of architectural works! They all graduated from England AA Architectural Alliance College At the knowledge level, they shared a large number of books and cases for me, and shared their stories of learning in AA, so that I can understand what kind of buildings are good buildings and why I want to go abroad.
The two teachers will also share their ideas with me, which is a process of brain collision. They constantly guide me, constantly improve my works, and also let me have greater confidence in my own collection of works to participate in interviews with foreign universities.
Q: Have you ever participated in natural light activities before? Learning architectural design will definitely participate in STUDIO, right?
Yes, I have participated in the super high-rise building studio led by Mr. Yang. Studio is completely in accordance with the foreign teaching mode. Tutors and students make a presentation once a week in the form of a round table meeting, and there are also regular celebrities coming to comment, which is different from one-on-one coaching for me.
In Studio, I also met other architecture majors and discussed the sublimation of the scheme together. At the same time, many teachers' comments on the scheme can better point out the loopholes of my scheme, so that I can better improve the scheme.
Q: Do you have any suggestions for younger students who want to apply for this major in the future?
As long as you love architecture, you should keep moving towards your goal!
Q: Have you finally decided which school to go to?
Royal Academy of Arts, I want to be an art student!! (Although both teachers recommend AA, ha ha) The main teaching atmosphere given by Huang Yi is relatively diversified. I can meet students from different majors, learn about different disciplines and broaden my vision, which may also give me different perceptions of beauty.
It can be seen from the sharing of Zhang's application work collection for studying abroad in British architecture that architecture is a highly comprehensive discipline. Taking part in various projects and competitions can improve your professional quality, and at the same time improve your understanding, expression, thinking and teamwork skills. At the same time, you will certainly gain from your efforts, As Zhang said, "As long as you love architecture, you should keep moving towards your own goals".
