UCL University College London, as one of the professional colleges in the field of landscape architecture and AA, has always been the Dream School for many students. In natural light, many students also set UCL as their own goal. Today, Luo, who shares the case of his portfolio with us, is a student who successfully won the UCL offer, The collection of works won six offers from British universities at one fell swoop, namely University College London, Manchester City University, Cardiff University, Bath University, Nottingham University and Liverpool University. Let's take a look at Luo's application experience and the creation process of his works! Maybe it can bring more meaningful gains for your application!

Creation experience of UCL architecture major's overseas study application portfolio:

01. Work evaluation+early communication, determine the course direction and solve three major problems

Luo majored in architecture in Guangxi University as an undergraduate. When I first came here, I had the impression that she was good at communication. She didn't consider changing her major, so in general, the professional foundation accumulated during her undergraduate study was very good, and she also had some ideas about architecture.

But I also found some existing problems in the communication with her Studying abroad in architectural design Question:

The design idea and logic are confused

Although she had some ideas, she would still be confused when explaining them to me. Both the design idea and the overall creation logic are not clear enough, messy and jumping.

Complex concept, but no clear project main line

The second point is that when we evaluated the works, she showed me many complicated concepts expressed in the works. Each project has done a lot and involved a wide range of dimensions, but it still makes me wonder what the main line of the project is.

   Simple theme, lack of creativity

Most of the works that Luo showed me in the early stage were school projects during her undergraduate period, which may have serious disciplinary skills tendencies; Or there are obvious traces of practice and lack of independent thinking. Therefore, on the whole, each theme is relatively "simple" and there is no clear research and creative process.

Based on the early communication with Luo and the evaluation results of her portfolio, we communicated with her many times to understand the direction of her interest; Past creative habits; And target universities. Soon, we identified the curriculum design for Luo.

According to the current situation of Luo, our course needs to solve the following three key problems:

1. All design logic must be clear

2. All project design concepts try to break the routine and do not make general boring design propositions

3. Try to unify all design themes under one big theme, so that each project can have its own unified logic and style

02. Find out the points of interest, combine specific majors, and overcome three major problems and "bad habits"

After determining the course direction, we officially started the UCL Architecture Application Portfolio course. Luo's portfolio includes 4 projects, each of which has its own characteristics and significance. We also combine the progress of the project and the course to solve the three major problems identified above.

As for the first point, "All design logic must be clear", my request to Luo is to resolutely reject some bad habits of building in school.

Generally, when domestic architecture students are doing project design, they are particularly accustomed to finish the model and technical drawings first, and then reverse the previous analysis drawings. In fact, it's not just architecture. Many students of other design related majors will also have such "bad habits". I must tell you seriously that this method is absolutely not allowed.

Why? First of all, it is very dangerous for us to directly predict the project results by relying on our own "experience" and feelings when we do not know a site, project background, local environmental space, and do not do initial research.

The project starts from the initial survey of the site until the end of the later period, each step of which is linked by the theme and logical rigorous "derivation". Architecture is a discipline that requires both designers' creativity and rigorous logic. When the steps and implementation logic of the project are disrupted, it is not only difficult to stand on its feet, but also the case of Luo, whose logical thinking is also disrupted.

In the production of architectural works, we asked Luo to use the normal design logic "background, story, concept, model, and block" to design. Only such design logic can make your concept clear and understand what you are doing.

For the second point, Luo spent a lot of time with the teacher to complete this aspect. Because for architectural design, the improvement of drawing ability can be achieved only through hard practice, but the upgrading of design thinking is relatively difficult.

Therefore, Luo spent a lot of time on the re planning of the design concept, but what made me very happy during this period was that Luo had a strong sense of self promotion, and she also knew her shortcomings in this regard, so the training at this stage was also very smooth.

Secondly, there is also a problem at this stage. Finally, we need to consider how to convert these interesting concepts into interesting image languages. In fact, this is the re upgrading of creative thinking, which requires further attempts and thinking.

As for the third point, in addition to professional content, I will also talk with Luo about her ideas, her interests, and her future research direction. In the process of chatting, we found that what she was most interested in in architectural design was "the contradiction between traditional buildings and modern buildings in terms of volume, function, materials, etc., and finding a balance between the 'old' and 'new'".

This seems to be a somewhat complicated idea, and it is actually quite difficult for Luo. But since it is the direction Luo is interested in and wants to try, I also encourage her to go step by step to overcome difficulties and gradually solve problems, so as to sort out her own ideas and complete her own ideas.

In the end, we also ran this theme through all the design projects and links of Luo. Although the focus of each project was different, we had many discussions, exchanges and attempts in each project, so we were very happy and satisfied with the final results.

03. Complete the portfolio and win the Dream School offer!

UCL in British Architecture Undergraduate Ranking , and the university ranking first among graduate students. Finally, let's take a look at Luo University College London 4 projects of UCL architecture major's overseas study application portfolio!

Collection of British Architecture Studies Abroad

The first project<The Museum of Nationalities>is a cultural museum building project located in Nanning, Guangxi. This museum is a large-scale building project open to the outside world, located in mountainous areas.

In this project, Luo took into consideration the combination of local topography, mountain topography and cultural background to design, and finally decided to complete the project in the form of a traditional building turret.

In the early stage of research, Luo conducted a site survey to investigate the local culture and people's living habits, and finally determined the overall structure and construction method of the building according to the research results.

In terms of materials, shoulder eaves and wood structures are used to realize the functionality, space and experiment of modern museums. When the project is finally completed, it will also bear the dual meanings of "full space experience" and "integration of cultural background".

The second project<The Jenga Building>was based on a news story. In a company, the manager accused an employee of making phone calls in the toilet, and there was a video as evidence. The employee said that after working in the office for a few hours, everyone needed to take a break, but the company's public space was very small, so he could only call in the bathroom, but he did not expect that the company would use the way of monitoring photography to manage personnel.

Based on this news, the project started. The project focuses on the public space required by office staff when they work. Generally speaking, this project is biased towards the direction of architectural space, so it is an interdisciplinary project in a small scope.

The public space of office staff and the space in the building are intertwined, so it is necessary to take special account of the activities of office staff when they work. It is necessary to study the working habits, behavior habits, work and rest time of people in the office, and the relationship between them and the whole building space.

Especially in this news, we will see that the reason for this "conflict" is the unreasonable setting of the surrounding building space during people's work, which leads to the event. Therefore, in this project, Luo also paid special attention to the impact of the use of architectural space on the public, and the public's interpretation of the use of public space.

The third project<Add It Up>is also a project in Nanning, Guangxi. No. 1 South Jianzheng Road is a self built community. Because it is an "old city", most of the buildings here are only 5 floors or less. With the development of society, most of the owners here choose to expand their own residential buildings, and these "expansions" also have a high degree of "history". People living here in different periods have more or less expanded independently.

Although these "expansions" have brought convenience to the owner's own family, they have brought inconvenient life impacts to other residents living in this area. Not only in life, but also in the safety of building and housing, there are great potential safety hazards.

If the owner of the building expands the building according to his own needs without any restrictions, it is conceivable that the living environment and people's life here will be inconvenient in the future.

Therefore, the purpose of this project is to restrict the expansion of buildings by transforming some self built buildings into public spaces, but at the same time, it can also meet the living requirements of all residents in the community. In this project, Luo disassembled the building space into "geometric blocks", and made full use of and transformed the existing building space environment through the spatial function design and superposition of different blocks.

The last project<The Wooden Box>is about the space design of Luo's school. The courtyard of the college is an important public place for every student. In Luo's school, the public space of the college has three badminton courts and a ring corridor nearby.

The courtyard space is very open for badminton players, and can allow most students to use and exercise flexibly. However, the audience space around the corridor is very small. When the audience watches the game, the seats around the corridor will be located in the shade, but far from the badminton court. Therefore, the corridor space needs to be reconstructed.

In the design of this building installation, Luo decided to use simple wooden structures and boards to complete the construction and creation. It is not only easy to build, but also convenient for the audience to enjoy more seats as soon as possible. Therefore, Luo used boards of different sizes as side tables and chairs to build them.

In the functional design of the space, Luo considered that the space should not only allow people to rest and watch badminton games, but also have other uses. Therefore, the design also considered giving the space device the function of "college gathering center" at the same time, so as to break the "static" of the courtyard and allow the space to "move" because of people's activities Get up.
