The University of Michigan graduate degree in architecture is open to students who have already obtained a pre undergraduate degree in architecture (2 years), as well as those who have obtained an undergraduate degree in subjects other than architecture (3 years).

The graduate degree in architecture from the University of Michigan is a studio intensive degree with a critical attitude towards design, theory and production. Specialized courses and elective courses in the special field are complementary to the design education model. The combination of professional courses and courses in appearance, production, history and theory enables students to prepare a research based thesis design project as their final studio. The project offers a wide range of choices in history/theory, criticism, structure, environment and building technology, urbanization, sustainable design, computing and digital manufacturing. 　　 University of Michigan The Master of Architecture is a two-year program with 60 credits. The Master of Architecture degree is designed for applicants who have a bachelor of science degree in architecture or an equivalent major. A strong architectural design portfolio, including at least four studios and previous courses, meets the requirements of most compulsory courses in the first year of our three-year course. Applicants for a two-year degree will be considered for a three-year degree if their undergraduate work does not meet these standards. No credit transfer will be considered for degree application.

Two year Master of Architecture

Applicants for a two-year master's degree. The degree should have a bachelor's degree in architecture or an equivalent degree.

The three-year Master of Architecture degree is designed for applicants who obtain a bachelor's degree in disciplines other than architecture.

　　 How to apply:

A professional degree in architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited institution.

Professional degrees in engineering, urban planning, industrial design and other disciplines can be described by the applicant as related to the degree concentration applied by the applicant.

A non professional degree in an equivalent field of adjustment (art/design, engineering, urban planning or architecture).

Evidence that applicants are highly encouraged to apply for research, creativity and professional work in concentrated fields.

1. Explain the purpose/resume.

The two page purpose statement should clarify 1) the academic and professional rationality of your application for a specific MS concentration, 2) your design and research methods in the field related to that concentration, and 3) your idea of improving your degree and continuing to pursue the specific research and design work of the preparatory course. The statement should draw on past and present work and academic experience, as well as expectations and goals for the future.

Resume:

A good resume or resume will let us know who you are from another perspective, and elaborate your strengths and skills outside the classroom to show your achievements. In addition to your educational experience, student resumes should also include professional experience, other jobs you have held, a list of groups or organizations you have participated in, programming languages or other computer skills you have, community participation, or volunteer work you have done. 2. Personal statement.

A personal statement should be a concise and well written statement about how your personal background and life experience (including social, cultural, family, educational or other opportunities or challenges) prompted you to decide to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan. This is not a statement of academic purpose, but a brief (500 word limit) discussion of personal trajectory, leading you to decide to seek a graduate degree.

3. Architectural works.

　　 Postgraduate typesetting of architectural works , submitted work examples should support your statement of purpose and clearly demonstrate your research and writing skills. These may include published articles, papers, folders or other writing samples. The sample should be uploaded as a PDF file with the online application.

4. Transcript.

The process of submitting a transcript is divided into two steps:

The applicant will scan and upload the official transcript/academic record, which shows the official seal and signature of the registrar or recorder to the online application.

Applicants are also required to submit official transcripts/academic records to Rackham via email or electronic transcripts before the deadline for applying for graduate programs. Official transcripts/academic records must be enclosed in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution.

5. Letter of recommendation.

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required and should demonstrate your academic and professional competence and commitment. If possible, two of them should be from former professors.

6. Postgraduate entrance examination results.

All applicants are required to take the Graduate Entrance Examination (GRE). Please send the official score report (institution code: 1839, department code: 4401) to the University of Michigan at least 4-5 weeks before the application deadline. GRE scores are valid for five years. There is no minimum score requirement.

If you participated in GMAT or LSAT, we can use these scores instead of GRE. LSAT scores should be listed on the Additional Information page of the online application.

7. English level requirements.

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English unless they meet one of the exemption criteria listed below. Please contact one of the testing agencies shown in the table below and send the official score report to the University of Michigan at least 6-8 weeks before the application deadline. Scores must be received from the testing agency before the application deadline. Language test scores are valid for two years from the date of examination. Copies and/or faxes of English proficiency scores will not be accepted.

8. I-20/Visa (international applicants only). Please submit financial information when applying for a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan.
