Last time, we shared with you the graduation exhibition of St. Martin. Many Chinese students' works stand out from it, which is of great significance to us both in form and theme. In this year's graduation exhibition of Huangyi, there are also many Chinese students whose works are highly valued. At the graduation exhibition of these two colleges, three Chinese students from different majors or colleges, who may not know each other, chose the same theme - "memory and separation", and used their own works to run through the life process into a complete time line. Let's take a look at RCA and CSM graduation exhibitions. How can the works with the same theme create more possibilities?
Many students will also conceive such topics that can resonate with the public when creating, but at the same time, they will also face some problems, such as the topic is too common to find a unique expression angle, or the form of expression is too single to land To help students with this type of creation theme bring inspiration, Miss Gao from Natural Light UK Campus will also lead us into Huangyi again, and lead us to experience the inspiration collision of different art forms on the same theme through her most professional interpretation!
"Memories and Farewells"
Since ancient times, it has been a source of inspiration for literati and artists to create. In ancient times, there was Liu Yong's melancholy of "where is the old man? The misty rain is boundless", there was Nalan's lament of remembering his old man "the only way is ordinary at that time", and later there was Lu Xun's helplessness of "never seeing each other again for years, and the long wind sent the passenger ship". Perhaps it is because parting has been of profound significance in Chinese culture since ancient times. These three Chinese graduates also have profound feelings about it. Their works also show their artistic creativity from three perspectives, namely, the loss of childhood, the parting of life, death and memory.
Fan classmate Central Saint Martin CSM Graduation Exhibition:
My Bubble dog
Animation
Designer:Xuanchen Fan

This short film tells about a six-year-old girl who has a cute bubble dog. They have had a very happy time together. However, as the girl grows up, the girl's life is filled with various interesting activities, gradually reducing the interaction with the bubble dog. The bubble dog gradually disappears in the girl's neglect. Suddenly one day, the girl found that the bubble dogs that had accompanied her gradually disappeared into small bubbles, which gradually faded out of her life.

Fan is a graduate of MA Character Animation major in Saint Martin. This year's art exhibition has a total of 34 students' animation works, Central St Martins Our character animation major focuses on teaching students to create innovative animated characters with emotions and subtle psychology. This major also encourages students majoring in illustration and graphic arts to apply, so it is a very good choice for students who have a foundation in painting.

Scene of Saint Martin Animation Exhibition
Let's talk back to the story itself. At the exhibition site, many children gathered in front of the work to watch, which led me to think it was a children's animation work at first. I didn't understand the meaning of the story until I saw the complete short film. The short film is full of childishness in terms of music, color and character modeling, but it tells a story about "loss" that resonates with every big friend. Those childish pleasures gradually disappear as we grow up, but the memory is always fresh and fresh.
In addition, when I watched the introduction of the works, I learned that Fan's group of works was nominated for this year's Los Angeles Film Festival. This exquisite emotional animation style is also a direction that students can refer to when making collections.

Two works from RCA graduation exhibition of Royal Academy of Arts:
When The Light Comes
Animation
Designer:XU HANG

This is an introduction to the works at the exhibition site: those who slip away quietly in life, they do not leave us, they live "here" (the position of the heart). - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
This animated work is about a girl who finds out her childhood toys on a sunny afternoon, and her memory is also pulled back to the farewell scenes that touch the heartstrings again and again during her growing up. Finally, she realizes that life is a continuous journey to say goodbye to different people at different stages.

Saying goodbye is the most common thing that everyone experiences in daily life. This short animated film arouses the audience's deep thinking by saying goodbye one after another and the final heroine's relief in the sun. As Leonard Cohen said: "There are cracks on any object, which is why light will come."

As for this work, its designer, Hang, explained: "Every farewell will produce cracks in our bodies, which will make us feel trapped and exhausted. But when the light comes, the old memories will reflect and appear again in the cracks in our bodies. Those bittersweet memories, those people we will never see again, have not disappeared. They are always there, hidden deep in our bodies, waiting for the arrival of light. "
Royal College of Art From the perspective of the form of expression, this group of animation works is very different from the previous group of Saint Martin's short films. It has no bright colors and no details about the characters. It just adds a layer of emotional filter to these scenes about memories with strong light contrast, and pays more attention to the expression of the story theme.
In addition, at the exhibition site, there is an interesting detail. HANG put a set of transparent crystal devices in the corner of the wall where the short film was played, which symbolizes the concrete form of memory in the short film. This multi-dimensional exhibition way also reflects the concept of "interdisciplinary".
As a student of HANG Animation major study abroad In order to convey a richer theme of emotion, the students of.
For students applying for art study abroad, this multi-dimensional design awareness is also the direction we need to cultivate. The form of "interdisciplinary" can not only help us better express our creativity, but also show more comprehensive artistic literacy in the works. Of course, the premise is to express around the same theme.
The sound wave from dead
product design
Designer:Chuxia Luo

Finally, the theme of this group of works is more heavy. The designer discussed the meaning of "final parting" - death from the perspective of products, and designed such a set of products to commemorate the old:
The designer recorded the voice of the dying relatives, and then used the ashes as raw materials after the death of the deceased to make acoustic model products with 3D printing technology. Through this design, the traces of the dead were recorded to bridge the distance between the living and the dead.

In the memorial ceremony of touching the product, people recall the dead, look at the death in a more objective and calm way, and recall their relatives. The author hopes to establish a world without burial in the form of this product, which can help relatives accept the new role of the dead as emotional carriers.

The works on display are postcards and small devices made of clay. This group of products also has a poetic name - Caressing no exist. In addition, I also learned that this young Chinese designer has always been concerned about the space crisis of graveyards in big cities in China, and hopes to develop a better memorial way that can not only retain emotion but also solve the space crisis.

Exhibition site
In general, for a theme like life and death, many people may think that pure art will be easier to express, or that this theme "belongs" to pure art. However, Luo's use of product design to solve problems to express pure art's feelings is a more direct and touching form of expression.
In fact, this is also a way of collecting inspiration that we can refer to, trying to think out of the conventional way of thinking, thinking about the same theme from different professional dimensions, such as the combination of clothing and architecture, which is a classic combination form. Try different combinations more may help us to harvest the most ingenious inspiration!
These three works skillfully combine the "loss" in the initial childhood, the separation in life and the final death in life. I guess the three of them do not know each other, but they choose the same theme by accident, and use their own works to penetrate the departure and loss in life into a complete timeline. I have to say, When I finally saw these three works, my heart was filled with pride and moved to Chinese students.
Summary
We often share the scene of overseas art schools with you. The most important purpose is to help students understand the most authentic concept of overseas education and find the right target direction in the collection of works. Some students pay too much attention to "theme" and "professionalism" in the creation process, but in fact, the definition between different disciplines is becoming more and more vague, and the training direction of students' majors in various colleges is also more free. Themes and majors are not the only direction that can reflect creativity, and the ways of self-expression are also diverse.
Taking today's three students' graduation works as an example, they all chose the same theme, but in the process, they made innovations in materials, interdisciplinary, and forms of expression, and in the final presentation, they also showed design results that transcended the single professional dimension. And Natural Light has always been committed to integrating the concept of "interdisciplinary" into teaching, so that students can get overseas teaching experience in China, smoothly connect with overseas teaching system, and skillfully apply it to their own creation. Students who want to see the complete version of the above RCA and CSM graduation exhibitions can come to look for natural light!
