What do you think of when you mention CSM Saint Martin? clothing design? Industrial design? And what happens when creatures and St. Martin meet? This year, the Central Saint Martin School of Art and Design took the lead in setting up MA Biodesign, a pioneering master's degree, and will welcome their first group of students in September! So, what's the difference between a two-year master's degree in CSM San Martin Biological Design and a new major?

CSM San Martin Biological Design, what's the difference between this new two-year master's degree? With this question, natural light interviewed Nancy Diniz, head of MA Biodesign Department, to interpret the new professional biological design MA Biodesign in Central Saint Martin.

Nancy is an architect, educator and co-founder of bioMATTERS. The bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Luciada, Portugal, and the master's and doctor's degrees from Bartlett Graduate School, University College London, UK.

The research field is between human body and building scale, involving topics related to biotechnology, digital manufacturing, interactive design and data visualization. His works have been exhibited in many venues such as the "Fashion Digital Night" of Milan Fashion Week 2019, Lisbon Triennial Architecture Exhibition, Istanbul Design Biennale, New York EYEBEAM, China Today Art Museum, GAA Foundation, Remodeling FORUM Wearable Technology Exhibition, Milan World Expo, etc.

She acts as London University of the Arts Head of the CSM Saint Martin Master of Biological Design Program. Before that, Nancy had taught in Xi'an Jiaotong University and Liverpool University. Nancy once served as the director of the building science project, and the instructor of the Center for Building Science and Ecology (CASE) of Rensselaer Institute of Technology in New York. She is an affiliated researcher of ISTAR Information Science, Technology and Architecture Research Center, Digital Living Space Laboratory, ISCTE, Lisbon, Portugal, and WSNL Wireless Sensor Network Laboratory.

   The director of CSM Saint Martin's Department of Biological Design interviewed and introduced:

   Q: What is Biodesign?

Nancy Diniz: This two-year master's degree focuses on integrating biological bionics and biological principles into design practice, cultivating a new kind of designer, which can create a better sustainable future. Our biological designers will work in the context of the emerging bio circular economy, express innovative design ideas, and redefine what we design and manufacture in the future and how we design and manufacture.

Natural light: As a new discipline, biosign does not have a unified definition, but other reference majors also exist, such as biological science design, biological integration design, bionic design and biological information design. They all provide different definitions, which we can learn from learning. However, biological design is more like a means of learning, integrating these principles of biological systems into the design process to achieve a more comprehensive sustainable development technology. In fact, Saint Martin has always advocated the integration of superior resources. This new discipline aimed at sustainable development and biotechnology also meets the needs of the times.

   Q: What is MA Biodesign's expectation of students?

Nancy Diniz: We hope that students can discuss these topics in the learning process:

1. How to use biological knowledge to design new sustainable materials;

2. How can we use the experience summarized in the design process to develop solutions that adapt to the surrounding ecosystem;

3. How do we design biosocial systems to address contemporary urban resilience, human and environmental health issues;

4. How biological design promotes circular health;

5. Can the bio computing system we have created simulate the energy and material efficiency of life systems?

Natural light: CSM Saint Martin Biological Design is different from other master's majors in the UK. It is a two-year program with about 60 weeks. The course is mainly divided into three parts, each part has 20 weeks, and each part has different expectations for students. The first part focuses more on students from different academic backgrounds to establish a complete concept of biological design; In the second stage, they hope that students can use school resources to cooperate with external institutions, participate in social practice, and learn to establish their own biological design projects in the process of practice; In the last stage, the school emphasizes student communication and needs to complete a complete design project of biological design discipline. (The specific course content is also introduced later.).

   Q: MA Biodesign and Material Future are very similar. What's the difference between them?

Nancy Diniz: The coverage of the material future specialty is relatively wide, which can be said to be more Paul Vientiane's specialty. MA Biodesign will focus on the environment, sustainable development, and life related design themes. It can be said that the material future includes MA Biodesign, and MA Biodesign will discuss design concepts from a more professional perspective. However, our two majors cooperate in many cases.

   Q: As a new major, does MA Biodesign provide scholarships?

Nancy Diniz: Yes, although Central Saint Martin will not provide scholarships for a specific major alone. MA Biodesign, like all majors, can apply for scholarships provided by the university.

   Q: What are the characteristics of MA Biodesign?

Nancy Diniz: In addition to several excellent designers, there will also be biologists involved in teaching and research work to help everyone better realize design from an ecological and recyclable perspective.

How about studying in CSM Saint Martin Biological Design?

Through Professor Nancy Diniz's interpretation, we must have a basic understanding of MA Biodesign, a new discipline. Next, Natural Light will analyze the advantages, curriculum and application requirements of CSM Saint Martin's biological design discipline.

   Discipline advantages:

1. The most attractive thing is that we have the opportunity to become the pioneers in the field of rapid development that is most needed by the world today, and to participate in the emerging biological design movement against contemporary challenges such as climate change, low energy consumption manufacturing, natural resource depletion, human and environmental health.

2. We will have the opportunity to enter the "Growth Lab" of Central Saint Martin College, the world's top art school. This is a new biological laboratory, which provides comprehensive technical support for students. This is also what Saint Martin is best at. They integrate resources from various industries to provide students with cutting-edge educational facilities.

3. We will learn biological knowledge from the best biology lecturers in the world. The courses we learned are summarized in the pioneering and extensive research institutions and international laboratories of Central Saint Martin College.

4. We will have the opportunity to carry out knowledge exchange and research oriented projects with industry partners, and create innovative sustainable design solutions by combining the excellent creative process, subversive experimental culture and rigorous science courses of Central Saint Martin School of Art and Design.

   Curriculum:

The curriculum of CSM Saint Martin Biological Design is also one of the innovations. The curriculum is composed of three units, each unit has 20 weeks and three days a week. Each part has very clear curriculum tasks and objectives. As Course Leader: Nancy Diniz said, Saint Martin hopes that through the design of these units, students will gradually become more independent in the development of biological design practice.

The credits for this course are 180. After successfully completing the course, you will be awarded Master of Arts (MA degree). If you fail to complete the course, you will usually be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) after successfully completing 60 credits, or a Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) after successfully completing 120 credits.

   Unit 1,Seed

The first stage is to lay the foundation for biological design. Explore biological design strategies through a series of laboratory and studio seminars, lectures and design projects. At the end of the unit, a biological design work should be submitted, which can be learned through oral explanation or visual demonstration. This stage is also a test of how we can clearly express and communicate our research and design work.

   Unit 2,Grow

The second stage is to develop a personal biological design plan based on the first unit. It is necessary to submit a biological design project proposal, a risk assessment form, and the content integration of the R&D biological design. In this unit, the school will encourage us to actively seek relevant external work or cooperation, hoping to enrich our learning. The internship experience in this stage is usually highly valued in foreign art colleges.

   Unit 3,Harvest

The third stage is creative production and communication. The project proposal submitted in Unit 2 will provide a framework for our project development. We will discuss and report progress in groups during the course. This module emphasizes communication very much, and needs to submit a short film/animation to clarify the sustainable issues being addressed, and show our research, development and final design results. The final biological design project must also be presented in a 15 minute oral and visual presentation, and then a question and answer session should be held. During the question and answer session, the project needs to be clearly positioned and be able to debate relevant professional issues.
