CalArts Animation, set in School of Film/Video, is divided into two specific professional directions: Character Animation and Experimental Animation. Experimental animation BFA and MFA degrees are available, and only BFA undergraduate degree is available for character animation.
These two animation majors produce animation in two different ways, one depends on various methods of expression and objects, and the other relies on traditional 2D or 3D painting.
Character Animation is the most original hand drawn animation, but it also adds 3D technology. Character animation is the most powerful major of CalArts, and the employment rate should not be worried. Experimental Animation can be understood literally as an animation that is still in the exploration, innovation, and experimental stages. Unlike traditional character animation, experimental animation pays more attention to using different media and materials to express their hearts or some abstract concepts.

Curriculum
Experimental animation courses offer BFA and MFA degrees, of which MFA is divided into two-year and three-year programs. The degree program emphasizes the creative development of individual aesthetics in an artist centered environment. The course focuses on art and creatively develops personal aesthetics. The course covers 2D animation, stop motion animation, picture animation, digital production, stereo vision, motion capture, performance animation, programming and other animation forms. In order to develop students' interdisciplinary thinking, students also need to complete drama, dance, music, history, theory and other related courses.

The role animation course relatively emphasizes students' basic abilities, such as the establishment of conceptual frameworks such as drawing, design, vision, etc., and their proficiency in 2D and CG animation software skills, in-depth understanding of animation principles, and using these skills to show their creativity.

Experimental animation: upload through SlideRoom, do not encourage group projects, do not accept classroom assignments for basic ability exercises, and hope that students will spend time and energy on written statements. A video self introduction is required. The time is about 30s-90s. There is no need for editing or video effects. The focus is on expressing your personality and artistic thinking.
Character animation: paintings showing strong innovation and imagination, and works reflecting the ability to tell stories with images.
The CalArts animation portfolio includes four parts:
1. Observational paintings
Sketch map of manikin and environment (at least 15)
2. Creative works
Continuous images such as storyboards and graphic novels; Digital creative works such as 2D digital art, illustration, character design, cartoon CG works completed by software; Plastic arts: sculpture, ceramics, installation, etc.
3. Short film
The 30s-90s does not need editing or video effects, and focuses on expressing your personality and artistic thinking.
4. Sketch book
