Calarts application conditions! Applicants need to meet the language requirements, provide transcripts, portfolios, personal statements, letters of recommendation and other application materials, and submit portfolios as required by the school. The application deadline and application fee of Calarts, the regular deadline is January 5, 2024: the application fee is $85!


   California Academy of Arts (English: California Institute of the Arts (CalArts for short) is an art college located in Santa Clarita Valencia, Los Angeles County, California, the United States. It was founded by Walt Disney in 1961. It is one of the six regional certification associations in the United States, the Western Association of Colleges and Universities (WASC) Authorized to award BFA and MFA degrees. With a history of more than 50 years, it has cultivated numerous outstanding art creators. Its professional artists, performing artists, film producers, animation production and other creative talents are distributed around the world.


Under the leadership of well-known teachers, the California Academy of Arts offers rigorous undergraduate and graduate degree programs through six schools of art, critical research, dance, film/video, music and drama. The California Institute of the Arts has always advocated outstanding creativity, critical reflection, and the development of new forms and expressions.

   01. Academy of Arts


As a refuge for interdisciplinary training, the Art Institute actively promotes the creative environment and knowledge background of art experiments. The arts, photography and media, arts and technology, and graphic design courses prepare graduates to thoughtfully challenge popular practices, develop new forms, and become innovators and leaders in their chosen fields.

   02. School of Critical Research


The School of Critical Studies brings together internationally recognized writers, poets, scholars and thinkers who work in a variety of disciplines in new and traditional forms, from narrative novels, performances and multimedia to cultural criticism and political theory. The School of Critical Studies provides two master's degree courses and general education courses for all BFA students of the California Academy of Arts, and has established an important discourse center for the entire California Academy of Arts community.

   03. Dance Academy


Sharon Disney Lund Dance Academy cultivates future dance artists - agile, smart and innovative, and has expanded skills that can meet the needs of professional dance in the 21st century. Comprehensive BFA and MFA courses have established a high level of proficiency in performing skills, choreography, dance production techniques, and critical understanding of art forms - all in the context of a culture that can perform anywhere in the world.

   04. Film/Video Academy


The Film/Video Academy is one of the first places in the world to study and practice mobile video art as an individual, constantly developing and innovative art form. The college supports various mobile image/sound methods, and the overall goal is to cultivate "comprehensive film/video production artists".


Major: character animation, experimental animation, film and video, film director


   05. Conservatory of Music


The Herber Alpert Conservatory of Music at the California Academy of Arts combines an open and creative approach with strict technical guidance, personalized guidance and professional development training. Students and world-class teachers cooperate in a vibrant performance culture, and opportunities for cooperation with musicians, film producers, animators, dancers, drama directors, actors and writers flourish.

   06. Drama Academy


The School of Drama provides students with experimental, interdisciplinary, international and diversified educational experiences. Each unique course provides students with flexibility, skills and critical thinking tools to control the rapidly changing fields and pursue their career goals with the greatest power of agency.

1. Application deadline and application fee


The preferred deadline is December 1, 2023: $65 application fee


The usual deadline is January 5, 2024: $85 application fee


2. Language requirements


The minimum score for undergraduate enrollment: TOEFL IBT80, IELTS 6.5, PTE 53, Multi Neighbouring Countries (DET) 105


Minimum score for postgraduate enrollment: TOEFL IBT 100, IELTS 7, PTE 63, Multi Neighbouring Countries (DET) 120


3. Transcript


Secondary, high school or equivalent transcripts:


High school transcripts must be uploaded as part of the application. If these transcripts are in a language other than English, an English translation is attached. Please scan and upload the transcripts of all institutions. The uploaded transcript should be the latest and include the following contents: your name, organization name, date of study, score/received score, credit and scoring legend.


College, undergraduate or university, or equivalent transcripts:


As part of your online application, please upload an unofficial digital copy of your transcript (for example, a PDF scan) with an English translation (if applicable). Please upload the front and back of the transcript, even if the back is blank. The uploaded transcript should be the latest and include the following contents: your name, organization name, date of study, score/received score, credit and scoring legend. Please scan and upload the transcripts of all institutions.


If you are studying in a university or college level institution outside the United States, you must also submit a transcript so that the professional certificate evaluation service can evaluate each course. If you apply to the California Academy of Arts as a graduate student (MFA, MA or DMA student) or undergraduate transfer student, and your BFA, BA or equivalent degree or course comes from any educational institution outside the United States, this requirement applies to you.


4. Letter of recommendation


All undergraduate (BFA) courses require two letters of recommendation. At least one recommendation letter should be written by someone who knows your art work, such as a performance instructor or art teacher.


The following graduate courses (MFA, MA, DMA) require three letters of recommendation: MFA choreography, MFA film director, MFA drama director, and all graduate courses in the Conservatory of Music. All other graduate programs require two letters of recommendation.
