Design process

The students of design craft orient design in the field of art, accept the differences between art and design and our contemporary life, and reject the stale views. Students are taught that design is both conceptual and functional. The major has multiple goals: to cultivate students' multidisciplinary technology and critical thinking skills, and to be able to create innovative works in graphic design, illustration, animation, film and television, interactive art, electronic sound effects, social media and ecology.

film

famous World Film Production Sidney? Peterson started his first film production course in 1947. The works produced in that period also promoted the development of "underground film". From the 1950s to the 1970s, film makers from some schools, such as Bruce Conner, Robert Nelson, Stan Brakhage and Gunbor Nelson, brought about the American avant-garde movement. The current faculty of the San Francisco Institute of the Arts is internationally renowned in experimental films, documentaries, and narrative forms.

On the types of new art

The discussion of new art types is dominated by such a core experimental value: students should be fearless creators, independent workers, and open to the possibility of different expressions. Although the curriculum is flexible, it is also very strict, emphasizing interdisciplinary historical learning methods and encouraging independent critical dialogue about form, intention and meaning. The curriculum design has arranged some introductory and elementary studio courses as the experimental fields of cross media and cross-cultural practice, while there are also some advanced courses covering professional discussion topics, social participation workshops and individual independent research. This major educates outstanding students who are suitable for the contemporary world by exploring the constant changes in the global social and political fields and cultural fields, and integrating new technology into the curriculum as a tool for innovative artistic creation.

Oil Painting

In SFAI, the education of painters includes both learning in the classroom and activities outside the classroom. Students own Diego on campus? Rivera Gallery Exhibition and Bay? The main museums, galleries, and alternative art spaces in Area have the opportunity to participate in activities.

Photography

Led by a team of professional teachers, SFAI photography students can develop their own potential in photography aesthetics, technology, and concept levels, and reveal the torrent of the subjective world under the objective reality image captured by the camera. Many students even cross the boundary of static photography and go deep into dynamic images, book art and other fields. Whether images are produced in a traditional dark room or in software, this professional course can cultivate students' skills and vision of visual communication, critical assessment and individual expression.

Printmaking

SFAI's printmaking profession emphasizes "how" and "why": how to make printmaking? Why make prints? Students explore craft skills in the historical and cultural environment, and face the challenge of how to use the production process to creatively transform ideas into prints. At the same time, this major also trains students to have a sense of teamwork and cooperation to better adapt to democratic art forms.

The school's equipment can well support students' creation of materials such as ceramics, wood, metal, gypsum, fabric, electronics, etc. Students can learn traditional, alternative and cutting-edge sculpture techniques. At the same time, the course emphasizes research, problem solving and independent critical thinking, and requires students to combine concepts and methods for learning. The course also cultivates students' interdisciplinary experimental ability. Many students combine sculpture with digital media, performing arts, environmental protection and social awareness surveys.

History and Theory of Contemporary Art

The BA degree in contemporary art history and theory requires students to develop positioning visual art in historical and contemporary environments. The student union faces these complex questions: What is the relationship between art and influence? How does new technology and globalization change art? How do you connect with different cultures across time and space. Art history is constantly tested and investigated through new research methods and interpretations. Students will think about the cultural output of contemporary society in depth and breadth. Students of this major will finally conclude their major learning by completing a paper.

Urbanization research

The Urbanization Research Major of the San Francisco Art Institute has integrated the curriculum resources of the School of Studio Practice and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, creating a dynamic learning platform. Students can clearly participate in social, political and environmental issues from an artistic starting point, and enlighten themselves on creative solutions to urbanization problems, which include various forms of public art, social activities, ethnology and community workshops.

Postgraduate major

SFAI graduate students have two degrees in MFA and MA. Among them, MFA offers undergraduate majors: design technology, film, discussion of new art types, oil painting, photography, printmaking Sculpture MA major: contemporary art history and theory, urbanization research, exhibition and museum research.

Exhibition and Museum Research

Museums and exhibition sites are no longer just a few walls. They now include streets, empty shops, digital networks, interactive elements and alternative environments into the scope of exhibitions. This global trend of "exhibition everywhere" has become a new challenge for contemporary art.

Through SFAI's famous exhibition halls Walter and McBean Galleries, visiting artists, scholar series lectures and postgraduate series lectures, students can have close contact and interaction with famous artists, curators, historians, critics and other professionals.

Application Experience

In terms of expectations and requirements for students, the American Academy of Arts in San Francisco hopes that students can make introspective comments and analyses on their own works, and understand what their works want to convey. At the same time, the American Academy of Arts in San Francisco encourages students to participate in group discussions in addition to independent learning to help themselves and others achieve their academic goals faster and better. Applications are not all decided by examinations. What is more important is how you show your comprehensive strength to the recruitment teacher. This includes the writing of documents. No matter how good the strength is, it cannot be displayed. The difference between American universities and Chinese schools lies in the emphasis on personality, leadership and personal potential, which can be well reflected through social activities and works. We can focus on the course of struggle and how to overcome difficulties to achieve success. Show your excellent quality! Personally, I think these elements account for 70% - 100% of the whole application. That is to say, if your personal ability is excellent, the school will also want you if your exam results are not so good.
