School of Architecture

Main disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture (landscape), planning, architectural history

Undergraduate major

architecture

The undergraduate course of architecture at the University of Virginia introduces students to the methods of critical understanding and creative transformation of the building environment. Design innovation requires creativity, technical knowledge, cultural awareness, adventurous spirit and meaningful questions Our curriculum uses design as a model of critical inquiry to explore various issues and propose new visions for a series of dimensions, all of which constitute the discipline of architecture: from cities, regions, infrastructure and buildings to rooms, installations, furniture and clothing. The first year of study is a common first year course. The students' courses in three architectural colleges are: architecture department, urban+environmental planning, and architectural history. The UVA School of Architecture offers two majors for a bachelor's degree in architecture: pre major and design thinking.

urban design

City+Energy

Our Urban Design Certificate program assumes that future cities will respond consistently to environmental challenges. Without a clear strategy to deal with climate change and the difficulty of producing enough clean energy, urban growth cannot continue without restrictions. This project proposes to use the demand for energy to discover how we design new cities. Energy helps to establish new relationships between land and cities.

City+History

Design and planning professionals understand the past in order to imagine the future. Our students and teachers study the history and memory of a place, as well as the environment and architectural behavior that constitute a powerful catalyst for our contemporary cities. Our students invented new design strategies and strategies, just like the objects designed. Through the development of new open systems, we encourage students to understand the temporary role in the design process, while bearing in mind the strength of the urban material dimension. The urban design certificate project focuses on discovering new urban design tools. Our students responded in this unstable, delicate and provocative period, when our city needed to find a new relationship with the land, from the size of the site to the size of the territory.

urban design

At UVA Architecture College, the focus of the city+environment planning project is to understand how the city can fulfill its greatest commitment as a place of business, social equity and environmental sustainability.

UVA's Urban+Environmental Planning Postgraduate Program is committed to community participation, collaborative planning and sustainability. We believe that it is necessary to consider both urban and environmental aspects of an environment to meet its challenges and opportunities. We care about economy and fairness as much as the environment, and realize that there are interrelated relationships in all complex building environments.

The Master's Degree in Urban+Environmental Planning is a professional degree aimed at individuals interested in planning and creating healthy, safe, livable and equitable communities. Our students gain analytical skills, technical tools, theoretical insights and applied experience to make them effective, ethical and leading professionals.

Our students come from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including but not limited to: social sciences, engineering, design and arts.
