College Profile

San Francisco Conservatory of Music The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, founded in 1917, is one of the most famous music schools on the west coast of the United States, and the first music school in the west to join the "Western College Alliance" and the "National Music College Alliance". The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is located in the heart of San Francisco's culture. San Francisco's San Francisco City, where the conservatory is located, is the fifth largest city in the United States and an important financial center in the western United States. Colin Murdoch, the president, once spoke proudly about the college: "She is related to the future of symphony, opera and chamber music, and more importantly, she affects the future of music".

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has established degree programs including junior college, undergraduate and graduate students. It is mainly composed of the Brass Instrument Department, Chamber Music Department, Conducting Department, Acoustic Music Department, Guitar Department, Keyboard Department, Percussion Department, String Instrument Department, Woodwind Instrument Department and Composition Department. Each year, it enrolls more than 400 full-time students from 31 countries in the world. In addition, there are more than 500 young students aged 4-18 years and more than 300 adult students. The ratio of teachers and students is 1:6. The college will strictly control the number of students enrolled to ensure that every student can get the best care and the most performance opportunities. The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has passed through a century that can be said to be full of legend. At the beginning of the establishment of the school, there were only three pianos, four teachers and two blackboards. However, the school has continued to develop. At the beginning of its establishment, it has trained two world-famous violin masters Isaac Stern and Woody Menuhin. No matter vocal music, string music or other majors, they have made great achievements.

Isaac Stern is the musician who has recorded the most records in history. He once lobbied hard for Carnegie Hall to avoid being demolished and raised money everywhere. He was the first person who proposed to establish the "National Arts Commission" face-to-face with John Kennedy. He was the one who personally awarded medals to it by Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Mitterrand. He was also the one who promoted Perlman Ma Youyou, Zhu Keman and many other young people have also attracted the attention of the world for his achievements in chamber music. The trio he played with pianist Yitoming and cellist Ross is a classic of chamber music.

Yehudi Menuhin, on the other hand, is known as "the great violinist of the 20th century". During the Second World War, he held more than 500 performances for the Allied forces and the International Red Cross. In 1969, he served as the President of the UNESCO International Music Council, and in 1971, he served as the President of London's Trinity Conservatory of Music, In 1982, Menuhin became the chief conductor of the British Royal Symphony Orchestra. In 1990, Menuhin won the Glenn Gould Award. He is also the founder of the Swiss International Menuhin School of Music and the British Menuhin School. He has obtained honorary doctorates in music, law and literature from ten universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, and various medals from the governments of France, Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, Greece and other countries.

SFCM has complete infrastructure and first-class equipment. The new campus of the college was completed in the autumn of 2006, only three minutes away from Davies Symphony Hall and War Memorial Opera House. The music building designed by world-class architects has classrooms, training rooms, performance halls and libraries, and students can also enjoy the resources provided by the voice room, high-tech recording room and computer studio in the building. In addition, the wireless Internet service covers the whole building, and can also provide coffee and other catering services.

SFCM's library has always been committed to meeting the academic research needs of faculty and students. The library now has more than 60000 books, including more than 38000 music scores, 15000 visual materials, 12500 books and 77 journals. The music score contains the western music art of various historical periods and covers the music works of all major famous composers. The museum's collection focuses on music, and a large number of books and materials related to art, humanities and social sciences, and natural sciences. All the collected bibliographic indexes can be easily found on the college library website.

Application Experience

Regardless of sending works or interviewing, it is better not to choose music beyond your ability to perform for the exam. Foreigners are very strict in judging, especially in dealing with subtle music. In terms of the integrity of contrast, change, and music expression, playing beyond your ability will expose your weaknesses completely. On the contrary, the incisive music performance will greatly deepen your possibility of admission and even scholarship.
