Studio Art

StudioArt's BFA aims to build Hunter students into a strong competitive force among top art colleges and majors in China. As a five-year program, StudioArt's BFA provides students with enough depth and strength to explore the practice and theory of contemporary art, and such training has reached an outstanding level in the field of art. This two semester program can well prepare students to become highly competitive members when applying for MFA programs across the country. The school encourages students to cultivate their own unique perspective and artistic thinking through a series of exchanges with peers, tutors, groups, classroom and study of theory and art history.

Students of this major must choose a subordinate direction in StudioArt, including painting, sculpture, graphic design, photography, ceramics or combined media.

Art History

Hunter College offers a range of art history courses at the beginning, middle and advanced levels. This major consists of 30 credits, and 15 credits can be transferred from other majors at most. The Art History BA is designed for students who have a strong interest in liberal arts education in the humanities and those who want to continue their studies as masters of art history. We offer a series of courses covering different fields.

Postgraduate major

Art History

Since the establishment of the project in 1952, the art history graduate program of Hunter College has gradually become a model for similar projects across the country. Although Hunter College is affiliated to the City University of New York, nearly half of the students admitted by the school every year come from cities other than New York, and come from afar to obtain a degree in Hunter. Due to the large number of applicants and the quality of the project itself, the enrollment process will be very selective and cautious. The MA program provides students with a solid foundation for graduate study. The project explores a series of western and non western art topics through seminars and lectures - from ancient times to the present, from history to theory in various fields. In these courses, students can maximize the benefits of New York's rich exhibition and research facilities. Some courses will be held outside the classroom, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and students will also have the opportunity to participate in the exhibition of Hunter College Art Exhibition Hall.

Creative Art

The ideal geographical location in Manhattan enables Hunter College to provide students and teachers with many learning resources rich in cultural heritage and full of imaginations. In New York, students can quickly come into contact with the rapidly changing ideas and forms of contemporary art, which cannot be achieved elsewhere. This is crucial to the realization of our educational goal, that is, to cultivate professional artists who can still be able to achieve their own development after leaving the regulated campus. The idea of this major is to provide art students with extensive training to cultivate their critical and analytical visual thinking ability in their works. In such a well-designed environment, we encourage students to cultivate their own artistic thinking through exchanges with peers in the studio, cooperation with their tutors to complete their own personal works, critical seminars based on students' works, and classes on art theory, history, and criticism. At the same time, we invited many artists, curators, critics and historians to meet with students to enrich their horizons.

Each MFA applicant must choose a direction under StudioArt: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking/Drawing/Workshonpaper, photography, clay casting or combined media. At the end of the semester, in order to obtain an MFA degree, each student must submit an MFA research plan for their chosen direction and obtain the sponsorship of the MFA research plan from a familiar full-time tutor. For this major, full-time students should complete MFA studies within two years, with a maximum of three years.

Application conditions: MFA applicants must have a bachelor's degree (BA, BFA, or BS) from a recognized institution, and must have completed 24 credits of StudioArt courses and 9 credits of art history courses. Applicants should also meet GPA3.0 for all disciplines and GPA3.0 for art courses. Application deadline: before the beginning of March on January 15, the school will notify applicants who have entered the interview.
