Last year, Chengdu Natural Light gathered 6 architectural landscape designers from GSD School of Architecture, Harvard University, AA Architectural Alliance College, University of Tokyo, School of Architecture and Environment, National University of Singapore, Texas Agricultural University, and RMIT Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and released a new architectural landscape studio.

The purpose of the course release is not only to teach students professional knowledge, but also to bring the above famous school instructors closer to the ground from the "cloud" and "integrate" with the teaching model of top foreign institutions.

This is also the result of one year's research and development by the Natural Light tutor team, which has found a teaching mode that is different from the traditional one-to-one teaching mode and more suitable for domestic students. The teaching group with the lecturer as the core and the group as the unit teach many to many, and conduct multiple reviews of the review+many to many teaching mode, The depth and scale of the final collection output can be higher than 1v1!

Now, after a year, how about our teaching achievements?

Many students who have participated in Studio have received excellent offers! Among them, Zhang, a student of natural light interior design, won the favor of the admissions officers of five schools and won Rhode Island School of Design , Savannah School of Art and Design, Syracuse University New York School of Interior Design, and Boston Institute of Architecture!

He said that one of his favorite projects is "Virtual Residence of Artists" Studio. Maybe it's because I have never done a similar project before, which is totally different from the other four projects. In addition, it's very abstract, so it's a big brain opening experience. It also makes me feel a sense of achievement that I can finally produce a model with a certain pattern! "

Wang, also a student majoring in natural light interior design, was appreciated by the interviewer even though he didn't speak too much, and won an offer from the Central Saint Martin School of Art and Design, Birmingham City University, Manchester School of Art, and the British University of Creative Arts!

He said: "The" Virtual Residence of Artists "Studio is a very abstract and difficult project, but when I look back, I find that I have grown a lot. This project may be the most one to do manual exploration, which can be said to be a very icing on the cake work!"

Abstract but unforgettable, do you dare to challenge such a studio?

Last year's "Artist's Virtual Residence" Studio can be said to be both "abusive" and loving. "Abstract", "difficult" and "tortuous" become its synonyms. But in retrospect, it is a popular project that everyone can never forget.

   Exploration of Architecture Studio

Architecture is a rich and diversified discipline. In addition to its own discipline category, it also involves a wide range of knowledge fields such as art, philosophy, sociology, etc. In the long history of architecture development and various practice modes, three driving factors that continuously stimulate the evolution of architecture discipline can be identified.

These three driving factors can be represented by three dialogic relationships and corresponding discursive forms. This studio will explore the relationship between architecture and its own discipline history and theory, as well as with the natural and social environment through this tripartite thematic structure. Through the current design issues, students can understand the academic exploration and discussion mode in the first-class design institute.

Studio focuses on architecture as discursive form. The ultimate goal is to enable students to understand that architecture is not only a design practice, not only a physical or spatial form, but more importantly, an aesthetic, social criticism, a media of intellectual agitation and provocation, thus supporting the important role of architects as a public intellectual in dialogue with human history and society.

Project I An artist's virtual residence

Project Background

The purpose of Project I is to explore the potential form of architecture as an "ideological subject matter", "ideological subject medium" in a completely abstract way, free from the constraints of practical factors. This project corresponds to the first theme of Studio and the proposed "dialectical relationship", that is, the relationship between architecture and the discourse form of its own discipline history and theory.

Michael Hays, professor of architectural theory at Harvard School of Design, mentioned in "Architecture's Desire", "Desire of Architecture", “Architecture as a specific kind of socially symbolic production whose primary task is the construction of concepts and subject positions rather than the making of things.” As a specific social symbolic production, the main task of architecture is to build concepts and subject positions, rather than building objects.

Project will allow participating students to make the most essential exploration and imagination on architecture as an independent structure existing in an abstract meta space. While carrying out this highly self examining exploration, the Project will also explore the relationship between architecture, as a discipline with specific ideas and theoretical models, and other disciplines with high ideological and theoretical characteristics, such as painting, sculpture, music, etc., which exist in an interrelated abstract space.

Project Task

The task of Project is to design a virtual residence for the ego self-awareness of selected artists. This virtual residence exists in a work of the selected artist, as well as the theoretical and historical space contained in the specific art form and artist's work. The artists selected this time are the Dutch abstract painter Pie Mondrian and his work "Tableau No.2 Composition No.VII", as well as Zhang Daqian and his "Love Trace Lake".

Tableau No.2 Composition No.VII

Through the analysis of the painting itself, the careful reading of the painting and art theory, as well as the architectural theory, students will carry out a spatial translation and re representation of the "disciplinary territorial space" contained in the works. Students will show this spatial reconstruction through drawings and models, transform the painting into an abstract base, and then embed the virtual residence of the selected artist in this base. In this process, students need to consider this virtual residence as an extension of the artist's self-consciousness, an embedded form in the works and specific art space.

Course schedule:

01. Introduction and Q&A of Studio and Project in the first week.

02. Read and discuss in the second week. Analyze the selected paintings and begin to form an abstract base.

03. Read and discuss in the third week. Continue abstract base generation.

04. Read and discuss in the fourth week. Continue abstract base generation.

05. Interim report of the fifth week. Basically complete the generation of abstract base and report the results. Through analysis diagram, conceptual model and other media.

06. In the sixth week, the virtual residence was designed based on the abstract base. Students can adjust the concept of base in combination with other findings in the process of generating residence.

07. In the seventh week, continue the design of virtual residence.

08. In the eighth week, continue the design of virtual residence.

09. In the ninth week, continue the design of virtual residence.

10. Final report in the tenth week. Report the design results in the form of analysis drawings, models, animations and other media. recommend: SU Modeling Tutorial

11. Week 11: Refine and modify the design.

12. Week 12: refine, modify the design and complete the project typesetting.

Learning gains:

Understanding and thinking of the essence of architecture.

To form a preliminary understanding of architecture as an ideological system and a multi-disciplinary discipline.

Adapt to the teaching mode of overseas Studio in advance to lay a good foundation for future learning.

Divert inspiration and thinking in learning, and gain opportunities and resources for close communication with Daniel's mentor.

Improve the team cooperation ability, and improve the learning effect through the benign competition mode of "peer competition".

Through the theoretical knowledge of architecture, we can have a more comprehensive grasp of architectural thinking and methodology.

Master the ability of model making and professional architectural drawing expression.

Concentrate on the production of a project that combines theory and design, and comprehensively enhance competitiveness.
