Undergraduate students entering the School of Architecture share a common first year course. Students take core courses in three architecture departments: Architecture Department, Urban+Environmental Planning Department and Architecture History Department, providing a framework for studying contemporary culture through observation, analysis and design. Students must pass each core course with a grade of C or higher. UVA University of Virginia School of Architecture offers two majors for its undergraduate architecture major: professional preparatory course and design thinking major.
The focus of design thinking is to make students interested in interdisciplinary problem solving through the exploratory design process. The course provides a strong core in the design of the building environment, while providing a wider range of studios and elective courses for collaboration throughout the university. Our students focus on design thinking, integrate the research in the second field, and announce the second major or minor.

What is the design idea?
Our design thinking project recognizes the value of the design process as an exploration model to solve problems in many fields, from medicine to environmental science, from art to engineering. The design process involves both problem posing and problem solving, because it integrates thinking and manufacturing behaviors. Combining inquiry, questioning and thinking with prototyping, testing and experiments, design thinking enables our students to build collaborative and interdisciplinary skills.

Architecture minor
The minor course of architecture provides students with an opportunity to develop basic understanding and appreciation of architecture as an important part of culture and architectural environment. Minor courses in architecture are offered to all students in the university. The scope of students who complete minor courses ranges from those who major in related fields, who want to expand the scope of this effort, to those who consider graduate students studying architecture.
Direct enrollment policy for postgraduates
The School of Architecture provides high-level undergraduate students with direct access to postgraduate courses provided by the College, including architecture, landscape architecture, urban+environmental planning, or architectural history.
All undergraduate students with good academic performance should continue to study in UVA and complete a graduate degree. Students who have completed the seventh semester with 3.3 GPA or above are guaranteed to enter the corresponding postgraduate courses directly. In order to directly enter the graduate courses of Architecture (March) and Landscape Architecture (MLA), undergraduate architecture students must also obtain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 points in the design studio. These graduates were also invited to postpone their enrollment for two years, allowing them to enroll immediately or enter any of the next two classes. In this way, historians and planners can obtain graduate degrees (MAH and MUEP) within 5 years, and architects can obtain professional graduate degrees (March or MLA) within 6 years.
