Now the word "P picture" is no longer a simple word to describe post-processing photos. It often has a derogatory tail of "affectation", "false" and "unnatural" behind it. However, this photographer, relying on the superb "P" technology, became a contemporary artist as famous as Andy Howard. He is Andreas Gursky, a German photographer. Today, natural light brings you the training related activities of photography professional works.

 German photographer

Andreas Gursky

Unfamiliar with contemporary art Studying abroad in photography Students will be a little unfamiliar with this name, but his solo exhibitions are all over the world, including the Pompidou Center in Spain (2001), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Paris (2002), the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (2003), the Stockholm Museum of Modern Art (2008), the Victoria State Museum of Art (2008-2009), the National Museum of Art in Japan (2014), and so on.

Among the ten digital photos with the highest auction price in the world, Gursky's works accounted for three. Among them, his Rhein II ranked first with a sky high price of 4.3 million US dollars (about 30 million yuan).

Gursky is an honest and lovely man of nature. He has always frankly admitted that his photos were post processed. As shown in the picture above, "the most expensive photo in history", Gursky said that he used the post P to remove the unnecessary details such as dogs and factory buildings in the photo. But this does not affect people's enthusiasm for his photos.

The reason why Gursky is not so well-known in China is that he has never held a separate solo exhibition in China before. Even in Asia, he only had two solo exhibitions in Japan in 2014.

This time, natural light, together with LV ESPACE, brings you the wonderful contemporary light and shadow art under Andreas Gursky's camera!

   Exhibition details:

Louis Vuitton Beijing Espace Culture and Art Space jointly launched the natural light special session of Andre Gusky's exhibition Photography 1995-2007. This exhibition is planned within the framework of Louis Vuitton Foundation's "Hors les miles" (outside the wall) project and is the fifth special exhibition held in China. The exhibition will display the representative works of Gursky, a German artist in the collection of the Louis Vuitton Foundation.

There are two groups of representative giant works of Gursky in the exhibition, one of which is Engadine (1995), an early work, and a series of landmark Formula One Preparation Routes 1-4 (2007). These two groups of works span a long time, from which we can see Gursky's thoughts on contemporary social changes in decades.

At the same time, there is also a valuable documentary about Gursky, Long Shot Close Up, which for the first time tells the whole process of Gursky's creation of photographic works, from concept, creation, simplification to reflection, to show the audience that behind the seemingly flat photos, the artist has unique ingenuity.

At the same time, LV ESPACE staff will guide and explain the works of Andreas Gursky to everyone on the scene, which will help you to have a deeper understanding of this "great master" of photography.

   ABOUT ANDREAS GURSKY:

   Great photos

When people evaluate Andreas Gursky's photos, they often use the word Great. Great here not only describes the shocking photos, but also because of the huge space of Gursky's photos. The print length of Gursky's works is usually more than three meters. What's more amazing is the content he tried to put into the photos. Compared with Gursky's macro vision, the three meter ruler is smaller.

The most obvious personal characteristic of Gursky is to create a photographic art with more space than the subject. He likes to show the unusual composition and perspective relationship of the naked eye or human body from a very high angle to illustrate his understanding of the scene.

His photos often give people an illusion, as if his scenes are not the same dimension as our lives. But when we look carefully at the things in the photos, they are all very common around us.

Gursky's photos reflect the trend of globalization, and also reflect his special perspective on macro things, which makes his name a synonym for this high perspective, HTC photography style. In photography, if you want to go big, go Gursky.

   Take photo/Make photo?

If "big" is the most obvious style of Andreas Gursky, then post-processing is the most tacit "secret" when people appreciate Gursky's works. He did not hide anything, and was even keen on post processing of photos. To enjoy the endless possibilities brought by modern science and technology and explore the limits of contemporary photography with the space created by digitalization may be the real pleasure of photography for Gursky.

Gursky admitted that in recent years, almost all of his works were created in the studio. Such honesty not only brought him praise, but also made him suffer a lot of criticism.

Based on Gursky's creation, the photographic world began to think about what is the real meaning of "photography"? Some artists think that he lost his way in modern technology and "sold the camera to the computer". More people are surprised that he dared to break the rules, even broke the real shackles of the industry on the work of "photographers", and really began to "create photos".

As one of the first photographers to use computer post-processing pictures in the 1990s, Gursky is different from other surrealist photographers in that he believes in the authenticity of photos. As mentioned in his autobiography, he believes that the real concept of a photographer should be a reporter. The so-called "post-processing" is just the way he chooses to restore the truth.

This is probably the reason why Gursky's works stand out from the crowd and sell for $4.3 million. People always yearn for perfection, but fear the existence of "perfection to surrealism". Gursky has just grasped the balance between perfection and reality. It is obvious that he did not lose his way in modern technology, but let modern technology serve his creativity and works, thus becoming a generation of photography masters.

   Not just photography

If it is just photography, no matter how skillful and exquisite the composition is, Gursky cannot become a "master" of photography. What really makes his works priceless is his unique artist's sensitive temperament, and through his photos, we can clearly see his critical expression of the social consequences of contemporary capitalism and economic globalization.

So when we appreciate Gursky's works, we should not only see the photo itself, but also think about the age, address and emotions Gursky wants to express through composition, color. Such works can become the epitaph of our times. When future people see Gursky's photos, they will also understand our times.
