The interior design major, as the trump major of Pratt&Whitney College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, ranks first and second respectively in the United States! Today, the natural light will introduce to you that Zhou won the first and second interior professional offers in the United States by virtue of his excellent collection of interior design works, and the Rhode Island Institute of Design RISD has awarded a scholarship of $8000 every year!

Won the first and second interview of interior design works in the United States:

During the interview, we learned that Zhou almost always participated in various activities of natural light. From the experiment of exploding Yulin Erxiang, to The Shelter 1.0 parasitic building+nesting design and construction workshop, to many seemingly and Studying abroad in interior design Unrelated activities and courses were attended! As expected, we can't allow her to keep a low profile when she gets such an offer! Today, let's take a look at Zhou's experience in the collection of interior design works in the form of interview, question and answer.

Q: Congratulations! You've won your favorite offer! How long has your portfolio course lasted? Do you have basic courses?

Zhou classmate: The course of Interior Design Works Collection is intermittent for a year and a half. All works are conceived after natural light. Teacher Rita gave me ten basic lessons.

Q: How many works have been done in the collection? How about these works?

Zhou: My works are all based on the observation of various groups. The core thinking is the possible relationship between groups and space. The significance is to achieve the long-term health goal by promoting the benign operation of a small part as far as possible. Let's talk about one of my personal projects first.

Work 1: 24H Bookstore

This is a work of reconstruction of old buildings, which aims to provide a resting place for "urban herdsmen". It mainly discusses the audience experience and bookstore operation, and proposes three strategies: labor exchange strategy, joint community strategy, and place overlap strategy. The original building (old warehouse) is divided into two parts: high composite functional space (9:00-24:00) and low composite functional space (24H) based on the time line of people's activities in the 24H bookstore. It is hoped that people can find a sense of belonging here. Through the sharing, exchange and dissemination of books and knowledge, people can establish cordial relations. This is also a place for strangers to warm up each other.

Work 2: Agaric Garden Handmade Jewelry Brand IFS Physical Shop

Inspired by the "growth" of the garden, the geometric elements are extracted and organized, and designed to transform into elements in the commercial space: exhibition shelves, props, lights, etc. The store is small, and the whole space is centered on an activity platform, around which different events can be carried out, such as small exhibitions and manual activities. After the events are superimposed, the level of space will be richer, and people can have more experience in it. This is a practical project provided by teacher Rita, so in addition to expressing creativity, we also need to consider the construction cost, construction difficulty and other issues. During the design process, teacher Rita gave me a lot of suggestions, including later construction supervision, which is a good learning opportunity.

Work 3: Volunteer Center - Love Home Wandering Animal Shelter Center

With the volunteer center as the core, volunteer, science education and other activities will be held here to change people's attitude towards stray cats and dogs, realize the healthy operation of the whole base, and reduce the burden of institutions and stray animals. Since the base is very remote, the cost and transportation problems should be considered in the design process, and local materials should be used as far as possible, such as soil, stone, bamboo and other natural materials. The volunteer center is centered on a blue swimming pool, which is occasionally open for animals to play in, and can be used as the main venue for science popularization activities in the rest of the time. The reason why blue is widely used in animal activity areas is that it is more special in the visual spectrum of cats and dogs, and it is consistent with human beings.

Q: What are the teamwork projects you participated in? Would you like to share it with us?

Zhou: Yulin Erxiang Urban Experiment and The Shelter1.0 Parasitic Building+Nesting Design and Construction Workshop are both teamworks. Both projects have strong local characteristics, and the process is not only dominated by the designer, but also affected by the audience.

Yulin Erxiang City Experiment

Based on the theory of Spatial Agency, this paper discusses how to improve people's living environment by placing urban installation "wooden box" in the second lane of Yulin. Although it is only a few days, it is very helpful to understand "space self-organization", improve research methods, and cultivate hands-on and team cooperation ability.

The Shelter 1.0 Design and Construction Workshop

Cooperate with others to complete the construction of The Shelter 1.0 and the furniture design and production therein. Our group has determined the cabinet as the target furniture, and designed and produced it in the wood garden. Then we went up the mountain to build a shelter for the herdsmen. It could be said that it was a fairy day on the mountain and next year. Every day, the sun rose and the sun set, and everyone focused on one goal. Even after the rainstorm, earthquake, landslide, the sun rose, we still worked happily. I still remember the picture of the first truss framed the mountain pulled up by the big guy. Fortunately, the cabin was finally completed as expected, and now it is still burning a campfire on the ridge of Dagou Village to shelter tourists from the wind and rain.

Q: Which one is your favorite?

Zhou classmate: 24H Bookstore, this is the final work of my collection of interior design works, and it is also my undergraduate graduation design. The original intention of the work was in McDonald's in the early morning. I was surprised that it was full. There were students who washed at night, sanitation workers who came to rest, backpackers who stayed at their feet, and aunts who were lying on the table crying... This kind of emotional scene infected me very much. I was wondering how to create a more inclusive and comfortable environment at the same time?

With this initial intention, after investigation, I decided to design a 24H bookstore. In the process, I will constantly switch positions and consider how to better integrate the needs of guests, bosses, surrounding residents and partners. I was in a relatively excited state during the whole project, including the later modeling. And I have some regrets about this design. I'm still thinking about how to make it better, which is also the reason why I am impressed.

Q: Which work is more difficult in the process? In this work, how does the teacher help you solve problems?

Zhou: Yulin Erxiang Urban Experiment. After the field survey, we found that the problems faced by Yulin Second Lane were very complicated. The pressure from the government, real estate developers, and individuals from the masses required a lot of money and enough power to coordinate the contradictions between all parties to thoroughly improve their living environment. After a night of meditation, we no longer focus on the transformation of the "space" environment, but on the ability of residents to "self organize". We provide the residents with platforms and tools through the placement of urban devices to encourage people's positive behavior (transforming old things, bartering things...) and change people's attitude towards life, so as to activate the whole block and realize interaction and mutual assistance between communities.

In the whole process, Miss Anna Jiao and everyone moved forward and retreated together. She was stuck in a problem impasse, and there were arguments and moments of silence. But now I think that the process of scratching our heads is just the beginning of our thinking change. Since then, when I encountered the bottleneck period again, I always had a positive attitude to reflect. Coincidentally, during the RISD interview later, Professor Berger asked about this work. Because I was deeply impressed with this work, the description was impassioned. Maybe the professor was infected by my emotions, and the response was also very enthusiastic.

Q: Are there any interdisciplinary works in your interior design portfolio? How did you think of going interdisciplinary?

Zhou classmate: The Shelter Design and Construction Workshop is relatively interdisciplinary. I am an undergraduate majoring in environmental art, and I am still unfamiliar with furniture design and architectural construction. The first time I contacted Grasshopper parametric design, there were many twists and turns in the design and production process of the scheme. I struggled with my team members for a long time in terms of modeling and practicality, and finally made compromises and trade-offs due to time and material constraints.

When making cabinets in the wood garden, the cutting of each piece of wood encountered big or small problems, but fortunately, they were all solved finally. The construction on the mountain will involve the use of many tools, and the construction steps and division of labor and cooperation are also very important. I have gained a lot of experience. We should thank Mr. Yang and the teachers of the Woodwork Garden for their good guidance and help in design, production and even psychological construction. (Natural light has always emphasized the importance of practice, and only by participating in the actual projects that need to be implemented can we stimulate our potential in practice! This year, we released a new architectural landscape STUDIO, including STUDIO Dooo for architectural design study abroad, which is an actual construction based on the natural and rural context.)

Q: How do you understand this major?

Zhou classmate: For me, interior design is a major that builds relationships by shaping space, including the relationship between space and space, the relationship between people and space, and the relationship between people. Most of the time, the starting point of my thinking is not the space itself, but what people will do and feel in this environment. For me, the possibility that space brings to people is very important.

Q: Is there any difference between having classes in natural light and having classes in school before?

Zhou: There are big differences. Most school teachers will preset a theme for students to research and create, and in school, they will unconsciously consider the teacher's style preferences in order to get high marks for courses, and thinking will inevitably deviate from their original intention. The teachers of natural light will not set so many restrictions, but mainly start from the students' own interests. Teachers Rita and Lingling focus on exploring their own preferences. On this basis, I will be very motivated to investigate and deepen. Of course, it does not mean that we should create at will, because we should also convince ourselves and our teachers in design.

Q: What do you think is the greatest help to the works collection in the teacher's teaching?

Zhou: Sort out the whole scheme. The teacher will put forward many opinions from the perspective of onlookers, so that I understand that design is not taken for granted, but must be organized and logical. At the beginning, it was very difficult, but after the habit of thinking, the collection of works became much smoother.

Q: Have you ever participated in natural light activities before? For example, the recruitment officer workshop, portfolio days, and professional teachers' short-term courses

Zhou: I have participated in a lot of activities. I will also participate in many activities that do not seem to be related to my major. In the process, I have been inspired a lot. For example, I have participated in activities and courses such as a lamp of industrial design, creative collage of clothing design, etc.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for younger students who want to apply for this major in the future?

Zhou: Don't set limits on majors. The project type of interior design works collection can be broadened a bit, and the way of thinking is also. You can start from a specific but powerful point, and then derive rich content. In addition, it will also be helpful for design to observe life more often.

Q: Have you finally decided which school to go to?

Zhou classmate: RISD Rhode Island School of Design The original intention was Pratt. In New York, the atmosphere was very good and there were many internship opportunities. But after going to the official websites of the two schools, I found that RISD has a large amount of information, and its professional direction is adaptive reuse. I was very interested in the reconstruction of old buildings, and I also agreed with the professor's views. So I decided to go to Rhode Island, and it also gave me a scholarship of 8000 yuan every year.

Q: Did the teacher give you some advice during school selection?

Zhou classmate: Yes, I will make an assessment based on my work collection and language scores in the early stage for school selection. After getting the offer, Mr. Zhu recommended me the students studying there during the competition. I also asked some questions about the curriculum and school activities. In addition, I went to the official website of the school to check the curriculum, tutor background, school resources, etc.

   Tutor Rita's comments:

In general, I think Zhou's collection of interior design works is a reflection of her own, and her personal style is very strong. And from the time sequence of the four works, it can be seen that her design ability, logical thinking and expression ability have been improved step by step, and the growth rate is amazing. From the beginning, I only had some talents in color and aesthetics, and gradually grew up to be able to use my own design to solve practical design problems. I think this collection of works fully shows how she explores and seeks design step by step. It can be said to be a lively collection of works!

From the sharing of Zhou students, we can see that foreign colleges and universities attach great importance to the process of generating students' work collection projects. Because we can see the ability of logical thinking and problem solving, we should practice boldly. We should not be limited by our own specialty. At the same time, art instructors, as the support behind them, are committed to exploring each student's own preferences for precise guidance, Fully show everyone's style and characteristics, and hope that Zhou's experience in interior design works can bring inspiration and inspiration to more students~
