Today's work collection brought by the natural light is shared by Qiuhui, an absolutely unexpected young girl in the flower season. She should make a divination for herself before going out every day! Put this hobby of "feudal superstition" into the work collection and get the offers of SVA, Chelsea and LCC! Qiuhui is a CSM Central Saint Martin Jewelry Design Undergraduate Program. He changed his major to British American Tongshen Graphic Design Undergraduate Program, and finally got offers from New York School of Visual Arts, Chelsea School of Art and Design, London School of Media and other schools!
Summary of experience in applying for British and American graphic design by changing majors:
As Application for art study abroad When students of Qiuhui entered into the production of works collection, compared with other students of his major, students of Qiuhui needed a lot of supplement in professional basic knowledge and software skills of graphic design. But also because of the preparatory study experience in Central Saint Martin, students also have their own unique advantages in handcrafting, material application and design ideas. After early communication with the students, we worked out a design plan together, hoping to develop strengths and circumvent weaknesses, and highlight the advantages of students in the works.
When life gives you a lemon make lemonade!
The first item in Qiuhui's collection of graphic design works is called "scar". We guide students to take their own scars as the starting point. We collected the influence of scars on different people through interviews, questionnaires and other ways, making scars a medium to show people's experiences.
During the design process, students tried a variety of visual transformation techniques, and finally demonstrated their excellent practical ability and flexible application ability of materials through the innovative use of various materials and glue drops, creating their own unique visual language style.
Dig yourself, there will always be surprises!
Qiuhui, a student from Britain and the United States, applied for a bachelor's degree in graphic design. When discussing the theme of the second project with Qiuhui, she learned that she was a "superstitious" girl. At first, the student was not willing to discuss the topic with the teacher, because she was afraid that the topic would make her appear "out of place" with other students. In fact, this is also a point that many students will worry about. They are unwilling to dig themselves, and over consider whether it will cause others' criticism or misunderstanding.
But in fact, foreign schools encourage students to show their true side in the collection of overseas art works, so there is no limit on the project theme, and they will not come to Judge students because of this. What the school hopes is to know students more comprehensively through the collection of works.
After full communication with students, Qiuhui showed her "Yellow Calendar" mobile phone screensaver to the teacher, and shared that she would make a divination at home before going to school every day before going out. At the same time, students are very interested in various types of divination forms (such as tarot, constellation, divination, etc.).
At the moment, we determined this as the project theme, and then the students in the survey determined the "copper coin divination" as the design inspiration, and the "outer circle and inner square" design form of square hole copper coins was used in the book page design.
In the final binding stage, inspired by the form of copper coins connected in series by ropes, the book was finally presented in the form of "consistent money", which not only highlighted the students' own characteristics in the theme, but also made innovations in design ideas and presentation forms.
We can see from the above two projects that Qiuhui students start each theme from their own, around their own characteristics, extend their thinking in design, and present their advantages in skills.
Many students, like Qiuhui, had a lot of concerns at the beginning, and they were overly concerned about the external evaluation of themselves, which led to a significant reduction in self identification. The habit of hiding one's own personality in this way is actually not conducive to creation, so natural light always tries to guide students to explore their own inner voice and find their own uniqueness in the collection process, so as to create a collection of works that can let overseas colleges and universities see the potential of students to become artists.
There are two sides to everything, but good things don't need to be tempered!
By November, students had basically completed the production of a complete set of works and started to deliver UAL Ethical Interview apply. But a week later, I received a rejection letter from Lunyi Office.
The reason is not because of the quality of the collection, but because of the students' previous jewelry preparatory study experience in Central Saint Martin. After communicating with the teachers of Lunyi Office, we learned that if students had completed preparatory studies in the school where Lunyi belongs before, they must apply for an interview after an interval of one year, otherwise they can only apply through online delivery.
In the face of such a sudden situation, the application teacher immediately started to search for the online application requirements and data collation of Lunyi School, so that students can adjust the number of pages, size and project order of the portfolio in the first time according to the specific requirements of each school.
In less than a week, the composition of three versions of the collection was re completed (LCC's 20 page version; CSM's 10 page mini version and 30 page full version). He delivered the online application in time and received Chelsea's telephone interview invitation at the end of December.
In order to actively prepare for this interview, the teachers and students conducted a mock interview to sort out the reasons for the application for changing majors, the introduction of the portfolio project and the future learning direction. In the end, Qiuhui successfully completed the interview, got the oral offer of the professor on the spot, and received the official offer from Chelsea and LCC on January 17, 19, which is a double blessing.
Each country has different policies and requirements on receiving international students, which leads to each country has its own advantages and disadvantages. Many students are uncertain when choosing the country of application, and it is difficult to choose.
So recently, more and more British and American students have applied, and even students who have received offers from Britain, the United States and Australia at the same time. Natural light has also been trying to help students who want to apply to many countries. On the premise that students have sufficient energy, ability and time, the application teacher and art teacher cooperate with each other, not only adjusting the composition, page number and project order of the collection according to the preferences of countries and colleges. At the same time, according to the different requirements of the application materials and documents, the application plan will be re planned, so that students have more rights to vote against.
Both Britain and the United States apply, language needs double insurance
In recent years, more and more students choose to apply for the United States and Britain, but because of the differences in application systems and requirements between the two countries, students often need to invest more energy and make full preparations. In terms of Qiuhui's application experience, the "universality" of language scores has become a key point that affects the final application results.
In general, applying for an American school needs to prepare TOEFL scores, while applying for a British school needs to prepare IELTS scores. However, recently many American schools have begun to recognize IELTS scores, so many British and American students have chosen to concentrate on preparing IELTS scores, hoping to kill two birds with one stone. However, if you look closely, you will find that there are great differences in the requirements for language performance in schools. Taking British undergraduate courses as an example, the language requirements of the top art colleges (CSM, LCC, Chelsea) are IELTS 6.0. The language requirements of the top art colleges in the United States (RISD, MICA, SVA, PARSONS) are IELTS 6.5, which is almost equal to the language requirements of British schools for graduate students. Therefore, unless the English scores are very good, the requirements for students to apply for American schools with IELTS scores are very high. At the same time, American schools rarely provide language courses, so once students fail to meet the standards, they will directly send rejection letters.
Qiuhui scored 6.0 in the first IELTS exam, but he was unable to raise his score to 6.5 in the subsequent exams. Therefore, in the subsequent application, he missed some colleges because of his language scores, which is a pity.
Language is also a question that students pay more attention to. Students often ask us about the impact of language on school choice and offer, what is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL, and whether there is any shortcut to score.
In addition to Qiuhui students, they missed some American universities because of their language achievements, and many students chose the UK. Although it was a pity, fortunately, everyone finally got the right offer. There are also students who fail to pass the language test but still get the offer. For example, we interviewed Shi in the Chengdu campus some time ago. Although his language score did not reach 80, the admissions officer saw his ability in various aspects in his work collection and interview, so he gave CalArts Animation 's offer. Even if there are examples of successful offers even if they have failed to pass the language test, there are really very few such examples. And Shi also said that he regretted that he did not brush up his language test, otherwise he could directly take the offer.
Therefore, we must not have the mentality of getting an offer by chance even if we have poor language performance. Language performance is still a very important part of the application for art study abroad, and language performance is the same as making a collection of works. We do not advocate too much examination oriented, and obtain high scores through skills in a short time. In the future study of overseas colleges and universities, it is still necessary to lay a good foundation and improve the ability, so as to achieve better and more long-term development.
The above is the case of Qiuhui's changing major to apply for British and American graphic design. From this "superstitious girl" British and American Tongshen's undergraduate experience in graphic design, we once again see the importance of highlighting self and language achievements, as well as the cooperation between the application teacher and art tutor, which plays a decisive role in a student's application, Each student has different stories and experiences before entering Dream School. Please look forward to more cases!
