Today's interview brought by natural light is a student who applied for the undergraduate program of American graphic design with zero foundation and was competed by five top art schools, SVA, CCA, SAIC, MICA and ACCD. The top 10 offers of American undergraduate program of graphic design directly won half, and successfully got rich scholarships! What kind of graphic design works has this zero based high school student completed? Let's share her experience of applying for a bachelor's degree in graphic design in the United States!
Xu is from the Chengdu Campus of Natural Light. She has a cool appearance, but she has an extreme pursuit of details. She said, "It seems to be my nature to pursue what I love. However frustrated, she is still indomitable. I was so insistent on the ingenuity of design, careful consideration of color matching, and paranoid demands for details... These insistences once made me stop and confused, but I was very lucky. Because of natural light, my confusion was honed into pearls. Those frustrations caused by the unadaptable environment have become shining points on the road of my artistic design pursuit. " It was this love of art that made her pay off handsomely, and she got 5 offers from the Grand Slam! Let's take a look at Xu's zero basis application for the United States Graphic Design Study Abroad Undergraduate text interview.
Training experience of applying for American undergraduate graphic design portfolio based on zero foundation:
Q1. How long has your graphic design portfolio course lasted? Have you taken any basic courses? Can you briefly share your mental journey in learning?
The course of portfolio has lasted about one and a half years, and some basic courses have been taken. In the process of learning, my teacher Jonas, like me, has strict requirements for artistic creation. What he said most to me was "change it again". At the beginning, I would feel unconvinced, and even felt that the teacher did not understand my ideas, only knew to define me with his views. When I finished my collection of works and looked back at the first draft, I finally realized the importance of excellence and humility.
Striving for perfection is an attitude towards my own works, which represents my love for creation. Being modest and being taught is a more important part of my career. Pride is a problem that too many creators need to avoid. After all, artistic creation is not the best. I should always listen to the opinions of people who have come before me.

Q2. How many works have been done in the undergraduate works collection of American graphic design? Let's talk about these works briefly?
There are 7 works in total. The first is the creative font I made. My inspiration comes from the hairy pillow on the seat in my own room. I combed the hair into various letters, and further coated it with fluorescent liquid to make them cool in the dark.
The second is the three masks related to the three problems people are facing in real life. Then there is a pure art project, a ceramic art decoration version. Then I made clothes patterns, finished clothes and posters according to my grandpa's collection hobby. The sixth is my self portrait poster made by screen printing. Finally, I designed my own personal logo.

Q3. Which work is your favorite?
I like the creative font of the first project best, because it is an idea that I came up with completely, and it is also the first project I did. Personally, I especially like cool things, and the final effect of the finished product is beyond my imagination.

Q4. Which work is more difficult in the process? In this work, how does the teacher help you solve problems?
In the process, I think the difficulty is that sometimes I have to work on my project outside the natural light. At that time, the teacher could not guide me one by one, so I thank the teacher for communicating with me through WeChat at any time in this case, and helping me solve many problems.
Q5. How did you come up with the idea of interdisciplinary graphic design works in your works? Is it the teacher's guidance or where the inspiration comes from?
The teacher led me to do it. I have done a project that is biased towards pure art and made a ceramic installation. The teacher led me to do this work in the direction of ceramic art. The theme is my own thought about nature.
The other thing is to make a dress, because my theme is collection, and I have a general idea. The teacher has also guided me a lot, and my advice is to let me express it on a dress.

Q6. How do you understand the major of graphic design?
I think graphic design is a basis for many designs, which covers a wide range, mainly brand design and page design.
Q7. Is there any difference between having classes in natural light and having classes in school before?
There are differences. I think that natural light brings me not only basic painting skills, aesthetic ability, knowledge and software skills, but also innovation, which gradually gives me a new understanding of design.
Whenever I have a little idea, my instructor always encourages me to think and innovate. He never put the "standard" approach in front of me. He just constantly inspired me and kept telling me that this small idea may lead to many results, depending on how you think. So through a year of art study in natural light, I made all my fantasies possible. Today, I also learned to find infinite creative inspiration in a small matter.
Q8. Have you ever participated in natural light activities before? For example, the recruitment officer workshop, portfolio days, professional teachers' short-term courses
I have participated in many activities, and it is because of the activities that I met a very valuable opportunity. When I finished the collection of works in the EA stage, I met Mr. Chris, the former admissions officer of SVA. When I got an offer from SVA, I was very grateful for the letter of recommendation he wrote for me. At the moment, I also have enough capital to be proud - that's because my collection of works moved him. But in the final analysis, because of the natural light, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Chris.
In addition, I participated in a study tour of the Rhode Island Academy of Arts, which made me feel the breath of a truly top art school. It was really a great experience.
Q9. Do you have any suggestions for younger students who want to apply for the undergraduate major in graphic design in the United States in the future?
My suggestion is that if I don't know what kind of design I want to learn, I personally think graphic design is a good choice. If you are interested in art, you must know more or less about graphic design. Then it's better to be enthusiastic about this major. Even when you are tired, you will feel it is worthwhile.
Q10. Have you finally decided which school to go to? Why?
I finally chose SVA New York Institute of Visual Arts Because the graphic design major of this school is very strong, and its geographical location is in Manhattan, New York. The artistic atmosphere is very strong, which will be beneficial to employment after graduation.
Q11. Did the teacher give you some advice during school selection?
Yes, the teacher gave me a lot of suggestions. From the school's professional ranking to the standardized scores needed, they all explained to me one by one in a table. If I didn't understand any problems, the teacher basically replied in seconds. I really appreciate the teacher's suggestions.
