01.The Cube of Possibility
There are four items in my work collection. The first item is The Cube of Possibility, which is called "Possibility Square" in Chinese. The inspiration of this work is that once when I was playing with the Rubik's Cube, I found that these color blocks of different colors would change with the twist of the Rubik's Cube. I suddenly thought of a small enough and stable indoor space, but when the structure of the space changes, it will also cause changes in light and shade or color.
Then I immediately discussed this idea with my teacher and put it into the work. The main body of this work is made of two materials, namely white chevron board and transparent acrylic sheet.
In this work, I also made some hollow and interspersed structures. You can see different combinations from different perspectives. For example, a large space contains a small space, and a solid box is behind a transparent box. These interspersed squares can also create different visual effects by changing the direction of movement.
Then these blocks can be put in specific indoor space to reflect some windows or drawers of indoor furniture. I also want to use this work to express the different manifestations of these virtual and real structures in the interior space, forming a unique visual effect.
Xiao actually started to prepare the interior design collection late. In addition, it is relatively difficult to apply for RISD interior design with zero foundation and interdisciplinary. Many students with zero foundation will face such problems. They hope to find a "shortcut" to quickly make up for the lack of professional knowledge.
In view of this problem, we should first recognize that professional knowledge cannot be made up as comprehensive as that of students in this major in a short time, and in order to reflect our competitiveness, we need to pay more attention to expressing our potential and unique ideas.
In Xiao's first project, he chose a "small-scale" conceptual work. Many people may think that this small-scale space design will be easier to grasp, but in fact, this kind of space design will put more emphasis on the designer's cognition of space and structure.
In Xiao's collection of interior design works, he also fully reflects the importance of divergent thinking. This project not only has a variety of structures and applications of different materials, but also gives consideration to the display of visual dimensions. What he discusses is the more detailed use of space.
02.The Empire of Shadow
My second project is called The Empire of Shadow, which is also made of acrylic board and chevron board. The inspiration for making this model came from a picture I once found, which is a plate map of urban planning. I found that one of the areas is particularly like human feet.
So I suddenly had a fancy to build this foot area into a three-dimensional shape to show that the city is developing step by step in the footsteps of human beings. The final presentation of the whole work is a black and white city plate, so I call this work "The Empire of Shadows".
First, I extracted some graphic elements symbolizing the city from these pictures and turned them into black. Then I selected this "foot" area, drew a sketch combining the city plan and pattern, and began to build models, that is, built "feet" of different heights.
In order to achieve a high degree of unity between the pattern and buildings of various shapes, the pattern is integrated into the building group in pure black. These buildings are places for human activities. Each building is distributed with patterns similar to shadows to express that the use of such patterns is quite common in people's lives and follows us like shadows.
Xiao's design principle in this project is actually one of the most basic theories in graphic design - color composition. Color cannot exist independently from space, location, area, texture, etc. When restoring the most essential color of an object - black, white and gray, it also reflects the significance of structure in space.
In addition, Xiao used the same materials as the first project in the final project construction process, but because of the different themes, we will not find any homogeneity, which also reflects Xiao's application of "extensibility" of materials.
Through this "interesting" interpretation, Xiao actually discussed a more profound "urbanization process". Many people may think that the focus of interior design is "practicality", and even equal to the decoration, but in fact, interior design can also carry the designer's ideas and concepts. Xiao gave a certain meaning to space in this project work, and discussed a very serious topic through space, thus causing people to think.
03.The Hong Kong Voyage
The third collection of interior design works is called "Hong Kong Tour", which is inspired by a bowl of beef noodle I ate on the street in Hong Kong. The food is a very important part of everyone's impression of Hong Kong. For me, the beef noodle on that day also left a deep impression on me.
I recorded this impression in the form of hand painting. I combined the beef tissue in noodles to draw concrete patterns, and placed them in the most distinctive streets and buildings in Hong Kong. In this work, there are many elements, so I use acrylic board as the main body of my model, because its material can make the pattern of the model more harmonious, and the pattern arrangement is arranged by the real position of the cow stomach.
The final finished product is divided into two parts. The first part is a matrix drawn by acrylic paint and arranged by transparent acrylic, and the second part is a white chevron board that serves as the background board. The background is to show the route I have traveled in Hong Kong and the specific location of the beef noodle shop, which I especially marked with a red marker, It is a form similar to a map.
The inspiration of the third project is the students' own experience. In fact, this is also the method of thinking divergence that we have been particularly advocating. Starting from the students' own interests, personal experiences and feelings, we guide students to think more "emotionally" and diverge consciousness, so that students can understand design more personally and experience the process of professional creation.
At the same time, Xiao's project is a very interdisciplinary project in terms of theme and form of expression. From the final model, it even looks like a pure art work with strong visual impact. This is also because the students not only used the creation technique of interior professional dimension, but also combined with the visual expression form to choose and sort out some detail elements, reflecting a strong logical awareness and creative divergent ability.
04.Art Impression Exhibition Space Design
This project is the space design of an art museum, which Xiao didn't mention in the video, but it is the only real place renovation project in his works collection, which is of reference significance to students.
This work is based on the Shandong Art Museum. Xiao found that many people who like to visit museums are not familiar with art, but are willing to explore the beauty of art. Therefore, he also hopes to help people explore this art space more easily through more interesting space transformation.
As for the creative inspiration, Xiao once found an exposed photo when looking through his own photos. The color of this photo also reminded him of the impressionist painting style. The impressionists are good at expressing the impact of light through color contrast. Xiao combined this painting feature to do divergence through indoor space.
Through the study of hue and spectrum, attention is paid to the use of light in the whole space, and color elements are placed in the entire exhibition hall. Create a space where the audience can easily understand how the impressionist artists create works and feel the impact of "light" on the interior space.
05. Independent proposition - Error
The last work I did was Rhode Island's independent proposition. Rhode Island gave me three words to choose one of them, and finally I chose Error. I used two different ways to express the two different possibilities of Error.
The first is that I drew three pictures of holding the phone with different gestures and poking my fingers out of the screen of the phone in the way of sketch, which is to allude to the fact that contemporary people may be hurt if they are excessively addicted to technology.
In the second work, I used the form of cartoon to express another possibility of Error, which is also an exploration of the unknown. In this cartoon, I described a scientist. When observing cells with a microscope, I found that there was a universe hidden deep inside the cells, and then an unknown object of one of the stars waved to the scientist.
The reason why I use the form of cartoons is that I want to reflect the exaggeration of this matter and express the complex relationship between the unknown and the error, so I chose this exaggerated form of cartoons.
The fourth project is RISD independent proposition, RISD Rhode Island School of Design The original intention of the independent proposition of the project is to see more possibilities for students to apply for majors. In fact, it requires students to have a very "bold" imagination and the ability to dare to try. In the first part of the project, Xiao students combine the form of observation drawing.
Many students will think that observation drawing is an honest still life sketch, or a figure sketch from a normal perspective, which may be true in China, but under the teaching concept of foreign art colleges, observation drawing is actually with a strong sense of creativity.
It is not only to enable students to master basic painting skills, or to require students to obtain basic aesthetic cognition, but also to hope that students can explore and discover more artistic possibilities independently through this seemingly "single" art form. Students are required to be able to look at problems and think from other perspectives, which is especially important for students majoring in art.
In Xiao's portfolio project, he combined RISD independent proposition to carry out divergence. We can see that he does not simply describe or sketch a behavior, but, like all projects, gives it a theme and a deep concept that can be considered.
