Dyson, whether hair dryer or vacuum cleaner, seems to refresh people's previous understanding every time a product is released. James Dyson, the master of industrial design, who is the soul of all these designs, comes from the place where we stop in this issue, Saint Martin MA Industrial Design (hereinafter referred to as MID); Today, we are going to introduce the CSM industrial design major in St. Martin, England. Under the leadership of two teachers, Nick Rhodes and Matt Malpass, we will explore the CSM industrial design in St. Martin, England, deeply analyze the learning environment here, and interpret what kind of works collection can make this century old design school stand out.

Matt Malpass
Course Coordinator MAID
Quality Coordinator PCID
Matt Malpass is Central Saint Martin The core member of CSM Design Research Center is also leading some innovative design projects of social nature. As our guide this time, Matt Malpass took you to visit the workshops that can be used in industrial design courses, as well as related technical learning places.

Nick Rhodes
Programme Director
Product Ceramic and Industrial Design
Course Leader
MA Industrial Design
Nick looks a little serious at first, wearing jeans and simple shirt, like a rigorous college teacher, but he is actually an outgoing, lively and talkative artist. Professor Nick Rhodes has been carrying out art education in schools around the world - the United Kingdom, the United States, China, the Caribbean and Australia for 20 years. At the same time, he has also done product design, brand and packaging, space design and new product development for many well-known enterprises, including the well-known Chandon, LV and MH. Professor Nick Rhodes' works were exhibited and sold in New York, London, Barcelona, Milan, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
St. Martin pays attention to the teacher's background, and tutors who have designed for fashion brands such as LV can give students more vertical work guidance programs, because he knows more about the product elements that fashion brands pay attention to, and also better understands the future development trend.
Industrial Design Professional Topic Discussion Room
We also interviewed these two professors respectively. They have different styles and are both approachable. From the quick question and answer with Nick Rhodes, the natural light felt that he was the teacher who knew the blood type.
Interview with Professor of Industrial Design of Saint Martin:
Q: What is the difference between Industrial design and Product Design?
A: Name
Q: What is good design in your mind?
A: Profundity, people foremost
Saint Martin Industrial Design The two professors also shared more information about industrial design for us.
St Martin's Studying abroad in industrial design Focusing on cultivating students' ability to assume strategic roles, accurately positioning and grasping fashion trends, exploring new design concepts, and thriving in multidisciplinary teams.
Through project work, the course involves four design priorities:
enterprise
Through in-depth exploration of the development direction of enterprises, students will have the ability of strategic partners, consider the future needs of enterprises, and make adjustments to the current brand planning of enterprises.
public
Art design is not only the leisure and enjoyment of literati, but also the mission of public and public welfare in today's society. From the perspective of the basic needs and disease risks of most people, make design works to improve the quality of life.
expression
When influencing the public's solid impression, or showing some new design and research directions, we should first reduce errors, reduce the precise expression of ambiguity, and present the attitude we want to describe with works.
service
Integrating "enterprises" and "the public" to serve the world through expression requires a skilled grasp of industrial design and more divergent thinking, which also benefits from MID's interdisciplinary teaching environment.
These disciplinary frameworks position a broader range of professional practices and provide forward-looking concepts for industrial design as an open discipline for exploration, progress and challenge.
The teaching environment is diversified, and creative people from different disciplines come together, which is very helpful for professional discussion and problem solving in the process of project realization. The course is intense and challenging. Under this atmosphere, we strive to explore and develop new ideas and design methods.
Taking the world's most international city as a living resource, this major has rich experience in cooperation with external institutions. MID has set up cooperation projects with Visa, Renault, Microsoft, Dior, Herm è s and other brands. In addition, the industrial design profession won the Queen's Anniversary Award for its contribution to the creative economy, in recognition of its outstanding performance.
Compared with the requirements of Saint Martin's industrial design professional works collection, Saint Martin's industrial design professional works collection focuses more on the understanding of the theme, analyzing the main problems, mining and solving the real user needs, compared with the use of various software to mine the design performance and create the "expressionism" of dazzling and gorgeous finished products.
It tends to establish the whole design thinking and emphasizes the position of thinking, because thinking is very important for the deepening of research and the divergence of concepts. For each topic, professors will require a complete research process, from all aspects of the research, step by step based analysis and cooperation of different teams to finally get the answer. This is also what they hope to see in the collection of student works applied from home.
Assignment 1: Digital Cash
This work tells a design about electronic payment. The dial can be disassembled. When payment is required, the user can turn the dial to determine the payment amount, then remove the dial and give it to the merchant for payment. This design is also applicable to the AA payment link of multi person dinner: each person can complete the payment by taking down his/her own dial and giving it to the merchant. The work is shown in the form of short films. (* Almost all industrial design assignments are shown in the form of short films.)
This work echoes the two elements of "public" and "enterprise" in the key points of curriculum design mentioned above. In view of the fact that we have already entered the era of electronic payment, the use of mobile phone QR code and other payment methods has long been widely known, but at the same time, it also brings different risks. This design integrates the payment function into the wearable device, starting from the enterprise application to the public service.
Assignment 2: Dementia Simulator
(Alzheimer's simulator)
This dementia simulator headset is intended to let the wearer experience the symptoms of the disease.
The helmet will affect every sense, trying to replicate the situation of many people facing dementia. The translucent egg shaped device is located above the whole head of the wearer, and a blowing mouth, a headset and a screen covering the eyes are installed at the same time.
Play distorted voices and critical comments to imitate the auditory hallucinations experienced by dementia patients, while biting the mouth makes it difficult for the wearer to speak. The visor of the helmet affects vision by blurring nearby images. The significance of the whole work is to remind patients that it is difficult to recognize the challenges faced by individuals.

This project even more caters to what Professor Nick Rhodes said in the interview at the beginning of the article: "People oriented". At the same time, it also reflects the "service" and "expression" in the design focus, which can realize the purpose of serving patients and improving social facilities by expressing patients' suffering and duplicating their senses. Design is not only used to enhance aesthetics and increase artistic enjoyment, but also can start from the limitations of people themselves. For example, in this professional work of industrial design, Alzheimer's is a global problem. It seems that most people will face this dilemma when they get old, but few people really understand it, or even let it grow in the name of laziness.
Through the design of a headworn instrument, this work enables normal people to feel the real experience of Alzheimer's, which is believed to change the traditional understanding and way of getting along of this special group in society.
Finally, the two professors also shared with us the specific industrial design curriculum structure:
The first part mainly focuses on the design method, consisting of projects ranging from one week to six weeks. First, introduce various research methods and problems related to the discipline, and then directly implement them in the creation/implementation of design work. The unit will also be interdisciplinary and work with students from other colleges in other courses.
The second part: professional practice, mainly positioning the field of contemporary design and communicating with experts and institutions outside the school. The professional unit of industrial design usually includes one 8-week project, three 1-week projects and six week studio practice.
Unit 3: Students' independent design project. After a series of course training, students will design and make finished products by themselves in this unit.
Honorary degrees in related fields: product design, 3D design, furniture design, service design, interaction design, architecture, engineering and ergonomics.
The in-service (social) personnel can also apply, but they must prove their proficiency in industrial design and their personal career aspirations are consistent with the course objectives.
Usually at least one year of relevant professional experience.
Special applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for industrial design courses can still be considered to participate. The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. For example, this can be demonstrated by:
*Relevant academic or work experience
*Quality of personal statement
*Strong academic or other professional reference
*Combination of the above factors.
Each industrial design professional application will be considered according to its own advantages, but we cannot guarantee that it can provide preferential treatment in every situation.
English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 or above, reading, writing, listening and speaking at least 5.5.
The requirements of Saint Martin's collection of works can be satisfied only in terms of meeting the standards:
*An electronic collection of industrial design works, including at least four projects, including the final results of the applicant's previous education;
*35-50 sketch books/sample books/illustrations/paintings, using 40cm * 50cm paper. The works should be able to reflect their own artistic opinions, interests and thinking patterns.
*It can be presented in any form of media, such as sketch, collective project or individual work.
However, in the application season, how can I make my works stand out and get the attention of the admissions officer in the face of the rush of works of Rulin?
Then start with the content, CSM The Central Saint Martin School of Art and Design has always emphasized communication, not only between enterprises and consumers, but also between products and the public. At the same time, it also pays attention to the expression of designers for themselves. The collection of works is the best way for you to show your own way to the school, and the admissions officer expects to see a different you, so quality is more important than quantity, We should focus on the integrity and creativity of the project, and not several projects are designed in the same way.
British University Open day At the end of the ceremony, Nick Rhodes said proudly that we are the only award-winning art organization in Britain. When the Queen presented the award, she said: "Design is a good thing"
