What is studying abroad in industrial design? What is the difference between studying abroad in industrial design and studying at home?

She graduated from Cardiff City University with a bachelor's degree in product design, and from Kingston University with a master's degree in contemporary art curatorial design. She is proficient in industrial design, interaction design, and art management. She worked with the famous German architect/artist J ü rgen Hermann Mayer on installation projects An ECOLA exhibit, The SLEEPERIE Hypnos, Once exhibited in Clerkenwell Design Week London Festival of Architecture. Next, Mr. Zhang will talk about the industrial design that endows cold objects with emotion based on his interdisciplinary experience.

What is industrial design? How to get in touch with people and things?

 Industrial Design Study Abroad

"Industrial design is a discipline covering a wide range of fields. It combines engineering technology, anthropology, sociology, marketing, etc., and closely links innovative technology business and consumers."

Industrial design, as a discipline that needs to cooperate with machinery, needs rigorous and scientific engineering technology support in actual production and application, which indicates that designers should understand the basic knowledge of relevant technologies to ensure that the designed products can be reasonably and effectively guaranteed in terms of structure, shape, performance, etc.

In the study of industrial design abroad, you will find that industrial design and anthropology are also inseparable. For example, the application of products will involve race, gender, lifestyle, cultural background and other issues. After studying the anthropological issues, this kind of thinking can provide ideas for your design, and a good design that is different from ordinary products is likely to affect the way of human activities and lifestyles.

After design, the product is placed in the society and naturally has social attributes. First of all, products are required to follow certain social rules and values. More excellent design can also see the designer's thinking about the social attitude, thinking mode and aesthetic trend. At the same time, design also contains the relationship between people and society. Designers not only create useful things that serve life, but also guide the society in new ways of use and culture.

The principle of industrial design is to serve people, and the market is consumer oriented, so industrial design and marketing complement each other. How to make amazing design products be seen? How to find out the target ethnic group? These are all related to marketing. Grasping market trends and understanding consumer demand will help designers create attractive designs.

Industrial design is based on engineering, aesthetics and economics, but also social, human, economic, technical, artistic, psychological and market. Therefore, after industrial designers have these knowledge, their design concepts will be more perfect, and innovative design thinking with humanistic spirit and humanization is also the essence of industrial design.

The SLEEPERIE Hypnos project, which was exhibited in Clerkenwell Design Week and London Festival of Architecture in cooperation with HASSELL studio, reflects industrial design combining engineering, aesthetics, sociology, anthropology and psychology, and also reflects industrial design and contemporary Art Curatorial Design Cross disciplinary applications of.

   SLEEPERIE Hypnos

Sleep is a very magical thing, accounting for an average of one third of our time. You may have sighed that human evolution still needs sleep, which is too unscientific. However, sleep can only be delayed and cannot be avoided. Especially designers who often stay up late often need a moment of sleep in the day after fighting all night.

Then, in the increasingly busy future, will there be a public sleeping space in the city streets, airports, offices and office buildings? SLEEPERIE Hypnos is a project based on such a wish. After investigation and interview, it has launched a "future space" that can solve sleep problems.

 What is industrial design

The name of Hypnos comes from the "god of sleep" in Greek mythology, and the word "Hypnogenesis" in English also comes from this. This installation work is composed of colorful felt hammocks suspended on the wooden frame. The sleep pods are combined to form a new sleep environment. People can temporarily get away from the busy life and enjoy the comfort of the sleep pods.

This work was launched at the Clerkenwell Design Week, aiming to continuously enhance people's physical resistance to traditional sleep patterns and rest patterns, change people's sleep habits with new furniture and space environment, improve sleep quality, create a new sleep pattern, and develop the "sleep on the pillow" physique that everyone admires.

In this installation work, we can see the "people-oriented" design principle in industrial product design, and also see the combination of industrial product design and contemporary art curatorial design.

What is the difference between studying abroad in industrial design and engineering design?

"What's the difference between industrial design and engineering design? You can think of engineering design as an engineering designer. He is to solve problems between products, while industrial designers are to solve problems between products and people. Therefore, industrial design is user centered to solve problems, find problems, and find the pain points of users.

For example, when considering the design of mobile phones, we should consider the size, size, and material of mobile phones, as well as one point that product designers focus on: ergonomics. For example, whether the product is comfortable and easy to use, and whether my fingers can touch anywhere on the phone screen when sliding. This is about the design of mobile phones. Designers need to consider all aspects. "

In foreign countries, industrial designers have a Problem Solver title in addition to the Designer, because the biggest responsibility of industrial designers is to solve problems. How to find solutions with design according to people's needs is the biggest requirement for industrial designers. In design and thinking, you need to analyze WHO: for whom? WHAT: What do you want to design? WHY: Why is it designed like this? HOW: What kind of design can solve the problem?

 Industrial Design Major Studying Abroad

Just imagine how bad it would be if we didn't have high-quality product design in our life, so people are paying more and more attention to the word "humanization" in life. The highest pursuit in design is to design products that meet the physiological, psychological and spiritual pursuit according to people's behavior habits, physiological institutions, psychological needs, ways of thinking, etc.

What is the difference between studying abroad for industrial design and studying at home?

Industrial Design Studying Abroad and Domestic Differences

"The study of industrial design abroad is very different from that at home. In the learning process that most students experience at home, the teacher will give you the type of your product, or directly define a theme, so that you can design around it. There are many references and imitations. Students are lack of creativity for a long time.

In the process of studying industrial design abroad, you should actually use design thinking to think about problems, which is why you must study industrial design and product design abroad. You don't do it for a theme, but you do it by finding problems in the use of the product, or by designing for problems you find in the whole life of users. "

Take the Rhode Island Design Institute, which has a strong industrial design major and attaches importance to the establishment of good artistic concepts, as an example, we can take a look at RISD first Rhode Island School of Design Course schedule of industrial design undergraduate stage. Most undergraduate courses are foundation courses, learning basic knowledge such as hand drawing, modeling, and model testing.

After completing the basic knowledge, RISD's teaching mode is the combination of courses and workshops, and its research scope also involves packaging, exhibition and furniture design. These courses are helpful to cultivate and develop students' sensitivity to aesthetics, improve technology and also cultivate design thinking.

In the study of industrial design, hard skills such as hand painting and software are not the most difficult. They can be improved as long as they find the right way. Therefore, learning skills is not the goal of foreign universities to train students. Their goal is to make good designs. How to solve various problems in life and society is something worthy of designers to spend energy to explore.

Summary: Today, Mr. Zhang talked with everyone about how to become an excellent industrial designer, which has become the skills and design thinking that an industrial designer needs to have. It also analyzes the different teaching modes of industrial design major at home and abroad based on its own years of overseas study experience. Because of some commonalities among disciplines, I hope that both students of industrial design and students of other design majors can understand the essence of design and make more and better designs~
