What to learn in industrial design

   01. What is industrial design?

Industrial design can be understood as the design of mass consumer goods. It focuses on the function and form of goods, as well as the relationship between "goods", "users" and "use scenarios". Industrial designers are also often referred to as Problem Solvers, because the main task of industrial designers is to solve problems in life. The purpose of industrial design is to find the most reasonable solution within a limited time according to people's needs. In order to achieve this goal, industrial designers need a lot of research, analysis of who they are designing for, what they are designing for, why they are designing like this, and how this design can solve this problem. Therefore, the ability to find, analyze and solve problems is the key to an excellent industrial designer.

   02. Knowledge required by industrial designers

Industrial designers need to be familiar with ergonomics and some relevant mechanical engineering knowledge to ensure the usability, ease of use and manufacturability of products; At the same time, we also need to have a certain understanding of the market and sales in order to design products that can meet the needs and expectations of customers.

  03. What are the directions for art students to choose from in industrial design?

Industrial design has two major directions: product design, which is an applied art, is biased towards product design. It improves the appearance and usability of products through research and exploration. This kind of major is often awarded a degree in literature (BFA/MFA) after graduation; They prefer technology/mechanical engineering (such as Design Engineering). After graduation, the degree of science and engineering (Bs/Ms) is highly required. If they are graduate students, they often need to have a corresponding undergraduate background, so it is difficult to apply for changing majors.

   04. What are the differences between European and American universities in industrial design?

Taking the United States as an example, colleges and universities in emerging industrial cities such as the West Bank pay more attention to the balance between art and commerce, focusing on commerciality and practicality; In contrast, the East Bank, with New York as the center, focuses on artistic style, emphasizing conceptualization and artistry, which is similar to most European institutions.

What does American industrial design learn

The most important contribution of the United States is to let industrial design move forward and develop and professionalize industrial design. The United States is the first country in the world to turn industrial design into an independent profession. American industrial design is more rational, focusing on the rationality of science and technology, structure and function. American industrial design majors are distributed in the following three systems of universities: public, private and independent. After graduation, the students will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Arts degree by the National Association of Arts and Design. The United States pays attention to the concept of commercial design, so the students who pay attention to the value of artistic design must be needed by industry.

What do you study in British industrial design

Britain has a long history in industrial design education. It is the first country to realize the professionalization of industrial design, with rich experience and characteristics. Because British education encourages each major to develop unique teaching characteristics, each industrial design major has different courses, but they will focus on product design.

The UK is strong in industrial design. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in industrial design, you can continue to study master's courses in the same major in the UK.

Many of the students who apply for the British and American Arts International Industrial Design Graduate Program have had 1-2 years of work experience, which further increases the difficulty of application. Therefore, it is crucial for newly graduated undergraduate students to show their actual design ability through a good industrial design portfolio, The work collection should not only show the finished products after rendering, but also focus on the process.

What do you study in industrial design? British and American schools attach great importance to the embodiment of the design process: idea proposal, screening, sketch, model, user research, testing, deliberation, rendering, finalization, etc. All these intermediate steps are of concern to teachers. Through these intermediate steps, teachers can understand the unique development process of each student's thinking.
