Fashion design has always been a hot specialty in art study abroad. How can your collection of works pass the test and stand out in the fierce competition? For students who are new to fashion design, if they can't control the experimental "degree" well, they will easily go to extremes, and their works will become ungrounded and even impractical; Now, we invite Megan Suttles, the former vice director of the admissions office of Pratt, a member of the admissions officer of the Natural Light Overseas Alliance, to share her original ideas with the students. Can Pratt's overseas collection of clothing design, "experimental" and "practical" styles coexist?

Megan Suttles
Pratt, former deputy director of admissions office
Megan Suttles is in Preet College of Art From 2004 to 2012, she served as the deputy director of the admissions office. At the same time, she was an artist in Brooklyn and the founder, boss and curator of Hot Wood Arts.
The development of Hot Wood Arts aims to encourage cooperation, explore inspiration and cultivate friendship in the urban environment. Megan's work Absolute Storm, 2014
Megan, as a member of the Natural Light Overseas Admissions Officers Alliance, brought three-dimensional teaching guidance to students in all campuses across the country during the two month summer course of the Overseas League. Megan guides students to combine the pure art concept of sculpture with clothing design, and create with non-traditional materials. Through her courses, the students broke through the professional and thinking restrictions and created many excellent works.
In the interview, Megan specifically mentioned the importance of cross media and interdisciplinary creation. In the creation of the collection of overseas students' clothing designs, students are particularly prone to two "extremes": one is that students tend to create clothes with high practicality and wearability, so they will be more cautious when creating, and prefer to choose some common fabrics; Another kind of students, eager to express their creativity through fashion design, study the fashion circle's leading designers, and in the process of creating collections, they will particularly like experimental attempts.

Pratt clothing design overseas works collection, can "experimental" and "practical" two styles coexist?
Today, we will look at how students should balance the relationship between the two in the collection of works in combination with Pratt Fashion Design's overseas study curriculum, tutor background, student works and other dimensions.
Professional Introduction

Pratt is a unique art school. Compared with other art schools in New York, Pratt has more diversified disciplines, emphasizing the interaction between various majors and forming a unique design style.
Pratt's clothing design is interdisciplinary, which has been repeatedly emphasized in the official professional introduction of the school. Under the influence of New York, a national metropolis, Pratt's design style integrates various types of cultural characteristics. In addition to course study, Pratt will also organize students to participate in internships, overseas exchanges and other activities to broaden students' horizons.
Teaching objectives

Students will be able to demonstrate excellent garment production skills, and use 2D and 3D technology to deal with details in design, so as to achieve innovative design works.
Students will have a deep understanding of practicality and get inspiration from the study of emerging textiles and technologies.
By understanding the history of fashion and the theoretical basis for promoting fashion and contemporary culture, students will be able to convey their design ideas through the theoretical basis.
Students will focus on the creative process, have strong conceptual thinking ability and extensive and diverse knowledge of fashion industry, and have a comprehensive understanding from business to avant-garde.
Students will be able to design, produce and gradually present their professional works.
From the perspective of teaching objectives of Pratt Fashion Design, students have the opportunity to access multi-dimensional knowledge in technology, culture, creativity and other fashion design fields. The goal of the school is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the fashion industry, and be able to use innovative technology to express the uniqueness of their works, so as to become an independent and creative designer.

Student works
Pratt hopes to cultivate designers with unique perspectives and inspiration, and requires students to have strong curiosity and imagination. Therefore, the style of Pratt's overseas work collection of fashion design is more interesting, and the design is closely related to contemporary art and industry.
Let's take a look at the works of Pratt's clothing design graduates:

Seokwoon Yoon Runway Show
Seokwoon Yoon, a Korean designer, graduated from Pratt Fashion Design in 2017. Yoon began to receive attention when he was in school. In 2016, he first displayed his student works during his junior year through ATLANTIC CITY FASHION WEEK, and was sponsored by the organization. The world's leading designer platform 'Not JUST A LABEL' selects Yoon as an outstanding designer. His graduation works were selected into Pratt's annual fashion show and exhibited at New York Fashion Week in 2017.
What he is best at is to show elements with a sense of humor in his works. He often shows his understanding of humor by designing silhouettes and small details in his works. Yoon's design is full of interest and creativity. This style was formed during Pratt's learning.

SEOKWOON YOON Fall Winter 2019
Yoon's own brand, SEOKWOON YOON, draws inspiration from the integration of history and modern art. The brand shows the boundary between art and ready to wear, and takes art collections as the theme of ready to wear, which reflects the experimental breakthrough in practical ready to wear.
Through Megan's sharing and the analysis of Pratt's study abroad in fashion design, students can realize that Pratt's fashion design is an interdisciplinary specialty, which is a subject of "practicality" and "experimentation". When creating Pratt's overseas work collection of fashion design, students should also focus on the combination of "practicality" and "experimentation", and reflect this concept in their own works.
