My first project is an anti loss wearable device designed for Alzheimer's patients. Its function is a wearable vest designed for the elderly. Although this project is aimed at patients with Alzheimer's disease, in fact, I do this project to make people pay more attention to these patients with special diseases.
The proportion of Alzheimer's patients in China has reached 3.4% from 1990 to 2018, and this number is still increasing. This special disease is expanding at an unimaginable speed. Therefore, this is my project inspiration source and design background. I hope that through this project, more people can begin to understand and pay attention to these patients with special diseases, who may live around us.
The final product is a wearable smart vest. I embedded two flexible screens and a GPS chip in the middle of the vest. When people find that the elderly have accidentally lost, they can send a distress signal from the screen segment to the outside through the APP, so as to attract the attention of people around and let the elderly get social help.
At the same time, when designing the vest structure, I also took into consideration some problems about the living habits of the elderly, who actually have their own fixed life patterns. Therefore, my design also needs to ensure that it can not affect the daily life of the elderly to the greatest extent, and can prevent the elderly from taking off their vests. Family members can control this device through the app. Let the lost elderly get help in the fastest time.
The second project is a device designed for the procrastination group to improve their time management ability. Its inspiration comes from the shape of the record player and the incentive principle of the Skinner box is applied. Skinner's box is a reward product designed based on the psychology of the audience, which was invented by Skinner, a smelly researcher. Using the concept of "operant conditioning", two interaction mechanisms based on stimulating behavior were designed.
In this project, I made use of this principle, hoping to help procrastinators change their living habits and some bad conditions through this "stimulation" method.
When starting work or learning, users can lock their mobile phones in the device box and set the time to focus on completing the current task. After the user starts working, the device will count down by drawing a circle on the paper. When the user delays and times out, the marker color will change.
The longer the user delays, the more complete the circle will be. Through the lines of different colors, the user will be intuitively shown the use of his time of the day, so that after a period of use, the user can see whether his habits have improved through the device.
My third project is an intelligent fitness auxiliary product designed for fitness beginners. The starting point of the design, that is, my design philosophy, is to let users first use the app to learn action essentials, then attach the equipped monitoring points to several key nodes of the body, and monitor whether the user's actions meet the action standards through action capture technology, At the same time, the user's fitness plan is adjusted according to the captured action data.
In the process of this project, I also need to do a lot of work collection research and data collection. I learned at this time that fitness products also need to be cleaned and stored professionally to ensure the service life and use experience of fitness products.
Therefore, while designing this product, I also derived and designed a special device for storage. This device is mainly used to sterilize and charge the monitoring patches placed in it.
The fourth project is actually an interdisciplinary project combining pure art majors, which is an art installation product. The previous three projects are all aimed at a certain type of people with general characteristics. The fourth project I hope can expand the scope, and at the same time, more integrate my ideas and express my views on some objective facts.
Therefore, I took the current network environment as the starting point of this project to discuss the "keyboard man" that is particularly prominent in the current network. Although it seems that keyboard man is a labeled crowd, in fact, this group of people also reflects a state of the current network environment.
The network makes our life more convenient, but the state of not knowing each other across the screen also makes our views on some events different from the real situation, and also allows us to express some views more frankly and irresponsibly, which is also one of the reasons for the emergence of "keyboard man".
Based on this background, in the early research stage of this project, I used the form of collage to express my views on the network environment; In the actual production stage, I came up with the idea of combining Chinese chessboard and keyboard as creative materials to produce a physical art installation. Then the two performers' actions are combined to show the confrontation and conflict in the online world.
"Give me eight months, get the zero foundation, and win three offers"
My portfolio of American product design applied for study abroad courses has lasted for 8 months, including 1 month for basic courses. I applied for a bachelor's degree. Because I had never participated in such art training for college application before, I started to enter this field and major officially after taking classes in natural light.
At the stage of school selection and major determination, the teacher gave me a lot of helpful suggestions, went to see the school with me, saw some preferences between different schools' majors, and I also learned a lot.
At the basic course stage, the teacher gave me teaching guidance mainly from the aspects of learning hand painting, production methods of works collection, software, etc. Because the product design profession has very high requirements for hand drawing, especially in the stage of sketch and prototyping, accurate hand drawing can help avoid detours. During the basic course, the teacher not only taught me painting skills and the use of software, but also interspersed with me a lot of things about the collection of works, so that I gradually established my understanding and ideas about the collection of works.
"Everyone will encounter bottlenecks, but lying down directly is definitely not the best choice"
In the process of making my portfolio, I also encountered many situations and moments that made me headache. What impressed me most was when I was working on a project aimed at the procrastination group, because the product designed by this project was the project with the most conception time and repeated adjustments and modifications.
For example, people with Alzheimer's disease and fitness beginners, their group characteristics are very obvious, and have a certain label, which is easy to grasp, but it is difficult to unify the group characteristics of people with procrastination. So I have encountered difficulties in the early research stage, so I try as many methods as possible to collect their characteristics.
And because I hope to have a gamelike interaction between users and products, I also need to learn how to design game rules, and find various people to test and collect their feedback.
Many things are new fields that I have never touched before. When I learn a knowledge point, I may first need to understand a large range of knowledge as a whole to obtain the knowledge points I need most accurately.
Because I have been accepting new things and constantly being impacted by new knowledge in this process, it is difficult for me to ensure that I can always have a high degree of concentration and digest so much new knowledge in a short time. So this project is the biggest challenge of all projects for me.
However, I think that this is actually a process of constantly learning new knowledge and immediately applying it to practice, which is an exercise for my learning ability and psychological quality.
"The collection of works can reflect the degree of devotion, and the teacher's trust and dedication are most appreciated"
I think every foreign art student may encounter a lot of pressure, or entanglement and irritability in the process of work collection. I am very grateful to the teachers of Natural Light. At the same time, I have gained the most in eight months. The teachers are very willing to accompany me to constantly revise my works. The teachers are very patient. They will not tell me that it is impossible here, nor that I will not be able to achieve results in the end.
Teachers respect my ideas and styles, and won't directly deny me and my works. But at the same time, they also have "principles" and "ideas", and will tell me which ideas and aesthetics may be more advanced, which may be something I can think about.
The whole learning process is carried out with a high degree of mutual trust. The teacher will help me solve problems, discuss with me, give suggestions and thinking directions at the first time when I put forward ideas or have questions or difficulties, so that I can develop my own ideas in a broad direction.
Because of the teacher's help and patience, I have reduced a lot of psychological pressure, but also let my aesthetic quality and ability, in a short period of half a year, great changes have taken place, and has been making continuous progress.
I whispered that after the application season, I actually saw the works of many students from other institutions, and we all got the ACCD Art Center School of Design However, the quality of the portfolio can directly reflect the length of time each person has invested. I can see that everyone has their own characteristics and ability advantages, and also can see that everyone has different attitudes and ideas towards the collection of works. I think this is actually a problem that everyone can constantly think about.
"Enjoy the process of creation, but also learn to tolerate the loss of not being recognized"
Finally, let me share with you some of my experience in applying for study abroad in American product design.
I think we must first give up thinking about things that have nothing to do with the application, including whether we can go to dream school. Constant self doubt will not bring any benefits to your application and portfolio. But periodic self reflection is indeed necessary.
I think the most important thing for students who are working on a collection of works is whether their works can impress them. In fact, the teacher will give us great help in the preparation of the whole course and portfolio, help us correct the direction when we move forward, and ensure the quality and unity of the works. For us, what we need to consider is whether our works are cool, tall and deep enough.
I think most people choose to study art because they enjoy the process of creation, but we also need to know that many times, behind the enjoyment, they must also be able to bear the loss of not being recognized.
Because when we make a work, it can't be completely smooth. At each stage, we will encounter some small troubles or problems that need to be solved more or less. At this time, you may have to face the suffering brought by endless modifications; It may also face the doubts raised by people when they see this work; It is more likely that these negatives even come from your own. For example, when you go deeper, you may find that this idea does not seem to hold water.
I think everyone has met this situation before, but you must believe in yourself, don't doubt yourself, don't think "Why can't I do it?", "Why can others do it but can't I do it?" when you meet the bottleneck, you should immediately change your mind and think "How can I solve it?", "How can I make up for it now to find another way?"
Only by transforming too much self accountability and self denial into thinking about "how to solve the current situation" can you really get out of the current predicament. I hope you must believe that every bit of your effort and effort will be seen by our dream school. They will see the time we put into it and our growing self.
