"Why are some art overseas study institutions unwilling to take the postgraduate entrance examination portfolio. There may be more than one or two students with such confusion. Indeed, the ultimate goal of both domestic and overseas universities is to "go to graduate school". But when it comes to application, we will find that we can not only look at the purpose and results of the application, but also focus on the process - different from different "graduate school entrance examination" policies, so there are very big differences in specific requirements and application conditions. This is also the reason why most art overseas work collection institutions and postgraduate entrance examination institutions are mutually independent. Today, let's take a look at the following aspects. What are the differences between domestic and foreign graduate students? What is the focus of the training organization of the portfolio?

   01. The ultimate goal is to "go to graduate school", but "policies" cannot be generalized

First, let's talk about the postgraduate entrance examination in China. Most schools have their own screening mechanisms while complying with the unified requirements of the postgraduate entrance examination in China. Generally speaking, they are divided into two parts: the initial examination and the second examination.

Initial examination: written examination+on-site hand painting

4 examination subjects: public courses (politics, English)+professional courses (design hand painting/hand painting quick questions, art history theory/professional theory)

Different schools and different majors will have their own examination questions more or less. Here, we will discuss with most colleges and universities

The initial stage is generally at the end of December, where students need to create hand drawn/hand drawn quick questions on site, usually within 3-6 hours. (Here is the key point: for students, they need to have very strong on-the-spot professional hand painting ability.)

One thing that should be paid special attention to here is that the domestic postgraduate entrance examination requires students to choose their own tutors first. When the school publishes the enrollment brochure of that year, it will also disclose the number of teachers who recruited students that year. Students can choose suitable professional tutors according to their future development intentions and interest directions. This step is usually determined before the initial trial. Like a case around me, the student chose to apply for the film major. In the first year, he did not take the exam. In the second year, the tutor who wanted to apply did not take students with him. Therefore, he did not become a graduate student of that tutor until the third year.

After students pass the preliminary examination (the preliminary examination results will be released in mid February), they will start the second examination (mid March):

Re examination: written examination (professional&English)+interview (including professional interview)

Here we will talk about the former tutor. For students applying for art and design majors, you should take your own "work collection" to the tutor for an interview. (There are even some "first come, first served" ways posted online.) After the second round exam, the students who passed successfully got the admission notice, while the students who did not pass had another option - adjustment. Students can take the second place and follow the second volunteer to transfer to the same or similar specialty.

In general, the domestic postgraduate entrance examination mechanism is roughly the same, but there are also some special ones. For example, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, as the best art and design university in China, its enrollment requirements are somewhat different.

Academic degree Master

Professional Degree Master

 Requirements for preliminary examination of domestic professional degree masters

In the preliminary examination stage, there are two requirements for academic degree masters and professional degree masters. Both academic degree masters must submit at least one paper; For professional degree masters, all work collections must be submitted, and each major has given very specific requirements for work collections. For example, for a professional degree in a design school, students are required to submit three kinds of materials, including "collection of works", "personal academic papers", and "research reports".

This is very similar to overseas art schools, but compared with most of them, it is very different from overseas art schools.

The application requirements for overseas art schools are generally divided into four parts: language test, preparation of works collection, preparation of written materials such as documents, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and interview; To sum up, these four parts have basically constituted the four major links of art study abroad.

Compared with "postgraduate entrance examination" at home and abroad, there are several differences:

/Political examination is required in China, but not in overseas art schools;

/Both need to take an English test, but the emphasis is different;

/Domestic students need to choose tutors at the beginning. Although there is no intersection with the tutors, they often determine the future professional direction when they determine the tutors;

/Both of them have to submit basic materials, but each has different submission requirements and contents;

/Key points: The domestic postgraduate entrance examination requires taking the hand-painted design examination; Overseas colleges and universities need to submit their portfolios. Most of them do not need to take the on-site examination, except for special circumstances and application policies;

/Different schools in China have different requirements and examination subjects, and most of them need to prepare according to specific schools; However, although overseas art schools are also determined by the school, in general, only one set of works can be prepared;

/Domestic art college students who fail the second round exam can choose to obey the adjustment; But overseas art schools can only try to target

It can be said that there is a great difference between the domestic postgraduate entrance examination and the overseas master's application of art schools, and that is why the Portfolio training The teaching of institutions has specific emphasis, which is different from each other.

   02. The application "policy" has its own emphasis, and the institutional courses have specific "reference"

Compared with domestic postgraduate entrance examination and overseas "postgraduate entrance examination", the overall comparison is as follows:

Overall tendency-

Although there are unified standards, procedures and basically unified scoring system for postgraduate entrance examination in China, different colleges and universities will determine different examination questions according to their own conditions. It can be inferred from the perspective of colleges and universities: when publishing the postgraduate entrance examination information of that year, most domestic art colleges and universities will publish the bibliography and literature that examinees need to read together, so that students can buy and read independently in order to cope with the exam.

It is reflected in the institutions that most institutions are intensive training courses for specific institutions or majors, covering all the contents of initial examination, reexamination, public courses and professional courses, including sprint classes, intensive classes, basic classes and consolidation classes. Although most of the postgraduate entrance examination institutions have been able to achieve a broad and professional curriculum dimension, it is also difficult to cover all domestic colleges and universities in the professional course guidance link. It is very powerful to reach more than 10 colleges and universities or professional institutions.

But art study abroad is different. For one thing, because overseas art schools do not have a public course inspection, different art schools do not provide textbooks for students as reference materials.

Second, art study abroad can talk about "universality" according to the country. For example, in the United States, in general, most schools attach importance to students' creative thinking and creative logic; British colleges and universities pay more attention to students' discussion and thinking on social and global topics. In general, every country has a general routine to follow. Even for some excellent students, a set of works can be applied to schools in Britain, America, Australia and Canada at the same time by slightly adjusting the layout according to the specific requirements of different institutions.

As reflected in institutions, most institutions do not define the specific scope of college applications for their courses, but rather divide them into "majors" or "countries". Take natural light as an example. Before starting the course, students will determine the general application direction for students, whether it is the United Kingdom, the United States, or other countries; The second is majors, which are divided into "six major departments". When interdisciplinary is involved, teachers from other departments will participate in guiding courses; Finally, the course focuses on studio, focusing on the impact of students' personal interests on their works, and provides each student with a portfolio guidance based on specific college application needs.

Professional&Portfolio Courses-

At the initial stage of the postgraduate entrance examination in China, students' ability to draw by hand and achieve professional goals in a short period of time are mainly examined. For example, in the industrial design examination questions, we may see such questions:

Hand drawn quick test questions for postgraduate entrance examination of Beijing University of Science and Technology in 2019, the picture is from the network

 Hand drawn quick questions for 2019 postgraduate entrance examination of Beijing University of Science and Technology

All the above contents need to be completed by students in the form of hand painting during the postgraduate entrance examination. For students, first of all, they need strong and solid hand painting skills to ensure that they can complete works with high integrity and good visual effect in a short time. Correspondingly, in the institutional training, there are a lot of basic painting exercises and hand painting training, mainly to cultivate students' skill proficiency.

Secondly, each part has an accurate proportion of points and evaluation criteria, so students need to follow certain "standards" to require themselves in the early learning stage to ensure that they can achieve sufficient scores in each step, which is actually a bit similar to the art exam.

Moreover, the collection of works in the second examination stage that everyone is concerned about is more inclined to report and summarize the four years of undergraduate study than the collection of works studying abroad in art. Most of them are composed of hand-painted and professional works, with clear professional orientation and emphasis on practicality. For example, when applying for clothing design, the collection of works is basically a combination of clothing design works and hand-painted paintings. Although it is also a project system, it is more to highlight students' undergraduate learning ability and personal professional ability, and is used as an auxiliary tool for interview.

In this way, in the course direction, more attention will be paid to the cultivation and improvement of students' basic ability and professional ability. For example, the course will include: design quick question scheme design, examination paper title design, color matching design, design description layout, page design, creation basis, creation element design, etc; In the later stage, students will be trained and guided according to the real questions of previous years as specific cases and practical examination questions.

In the art study abroad, there is no hand painting exam. The only relevant thing may be the requirements of some schools for observational painting. However, the observational painting here is different from the basic hand painting, and it also emphasizes the depth of students' creative expression and ideas.

Secondly, for students, the collection of overseas art works is not a tool to assist interview, but more often the key and foundation of application. The collection of overseas art works requires students to show multi-dimensional comprehensive ability through multiple projects or works within a limited number of pages. Therefore, it has no unified evaluation criteria and score lines, and no previous real questions are used as simulation exercises.

The only thing that can be used as a reference is the display of students' creativity, logic, aesthetics, depth of thinking divergence and other comprehensive abilities, but these comprehensive abilities are difficult to use a unified score line to delineate good and bad.

Therefore, the collection of overseas art works tends to emphasize students' creativity and concepts, while the curriculum emphasizes the cultivation, divergence, and implementation of students' subjective ideas, as well as the methods used to express a specific object or topic. For example, students applying for Painting can also submit interdisciplinary works combining sculpture, installation, graphic design and other majors, because these cross media expressions may only be a way for students to understand painting. It will not be restricted by many basic techniques, nor by professional definitions.

   03. Can not use one set of two types of "postgraduate entrance examination" portfolios? Are there any exceptions? yes!

At the beginning, we took Yangmei as an example. At present, domestic art schools such as Yangmei and Tsinghua are very close to the teaching concept of overseas art schools, and more and more art schools are inclined to cultivate students' comprehensive thinking ability. This can be seen from the QS World Ranking. In our previous push, we have also compared the similarities and differences between overseas art schools and domestic high-quality schools.

We will find that institutions and majors like Yangmei, Tsinghua, Tongji Architecture and so on, although their curriculum and professional direction are different from those of overseas art colleges, they have been closely connected with overseas art colleges in some concepts.

For example, in the preliminary stage of the examination, the students have been required to submit the corresponding collection of works, which is no different from overseas. In terms of the focus of the investigation, there are also some overlapping parts with overseas art schools. Not only do we attach importance to students' skills, but also to their ability to spread ideas and concepts. Students' creative ability, aesthetic ability, theme divergence ability, logical ability, speculative awareness, project realization ability, research ability, etc. will be comprehensively investigated.
