   TV (BA)


The iconic TV major of Columbia University Chicago has trained professionals with work preparation, mainly focusing on four aspects: writing/production, director/production, post production/effects, Internet and mobile media. You will create TV in your first semester and immerse yourself in a course that emphasizes the future of storytelling, surrounded by like-minded and passionate students and faculty.

   TV executive production and entrepreneurship (BFA)


Today's television renaissance has enabled entertainers and executive producers to obtain the status that was once left to film directors as household names. Television media offers unprecedented freedom and creative possibilities. However, an entertainer, who is usually the creator and chief writer of a series, also needs business intelligence to control the competitive and complex television production world.


In the program "Executive Production and Entrepreneurship BFA", you will learn the art of visual storytelling and television business, including financing, management and marketing. This interdisciplinary project allows students to prepare for careers as creative decision makers in the media field.


   Film Production (BA)


We taught co production at Columbia College in Chicago from day one. In the Bachelor of Film Production program, you will create thought-provoking and emotionally complex films with professional equipment and advanced production facilities.


As a Film Production Student, you will develop team building, communication and creative planning skills, which will enable you to lead a team in any creative environment. You will analyze the process of film production, from concept development to screen development, and learn to write, produce, guide and edit effectively. Comprehensive development will help you find a job in the independent Hollywood film industry.

   What will you do in your first year?


In the first semester of the bachelor's degree in film production, you will take two basic courses: film notebook, a course focusing on critical analysis, and film image and process. This is a course of hands-on film production. In this course, you can apply theory by making films. You will spend most of the day studying, working, and building relationships with other filmmakers.


You will also have the opportunity to shoot many high-quality films at Columbia College in Chicago. We encourage students at all levels to cooperate on projects. We also hold conferences and welcome activities so that you can find creative partners. Your mentor will provide the guidance and feedback you need to create and improve your work. You will write, shoot, edit and repeat to hone your craft as a filmmaker, and build your film production portfolio and online presence.


   What are your expectations for the last year?


With the help of the staff of the Career Center, many older people have developed resumes, network portfolios, scrolls, websites and powerful social media presence. You can engage in advanced film projects within the department, or engage in commercial projects outside the college. You can also take the semester of the Sila course. During this semester, you will work in an active studio and intern in a production company on the west coast. Senior year is the time for you to strengthen your network in the film industry and improve your employability.

   Film Director (MFA)


The best directors need the same leadership, storytelling and production skills. As a candidate for a master's degree in film directing at Columbia College in Chicago, you will learn how to produce character oriented narratives, work with producers, lead crews, and create diverse and authentic films based on human experience. You will complete in-depth study in script writing, and guide your own script and the script written by others. In your thesis project, you will make and direct a short film.


Colombia offered one of the few projects in the country, giving aspiring directors the opportunity to work with producers in the first semester. You will develop your own style and voice while working closely with aspiring filmmakers, photographers, production designers, composers, as well as Columbia University graduate and undergraduate programs and actors throughout the Chicago art world.

You will have unlimited opportunities to participate in the passionate film community of Columbia College Chicago. Here are some examples of exciting events that occur outside the classroom:


"Doctor Your World: a festival to show documentary films planned by students".


Big Bang: Watch a polarized movie or TV show, and then debate between a person who loves it and a person who hates it.


Frame: A series of video interviews made by students, allowing senior and graduate students to talk about their film production process.


University Film and Video Association (UFVA): Students interested in teaching attend this international conference every year.


Film festivals: Chicago has held several famous film festivals. Some film festivals, such as the Chicago Women's Rights Film Festival, are held on campus and organized by our teachers and students. We encourage students to submit their films and volunteers.

Creative space and facilities


We have many creative spaces, equipped with industry standard software and technology:


● Audio kit: command and post production space with professional audio design and hybrid system

● Equipment Center: There are various cameras, lights and audio equipment available at five locations in the campus.

● Media production center: 35500 square feet of facilities, with two film sound stages, digital laboratories, animation suites, classrooms, as well as a production workshop and motion capture studio.

● Post production center: the most advanced system for editing, coloring, sorting, creating effects and mastering objects

● Remote media truck: the most advanced "studio on wheels".

● TV studio: three multi camera, high-definition studios.
