STUDIO DOOO, an architectural design tutorial for overseas students, is a physical construction based on natural and rural contexts. It is a work camp focusing on space and physical construction jointly established by natural light and mixed practical architectural design firms. For students and social personages, provide the opportunity to build buildings by hand, so that your design is no longer just on paper; From the conceptual stage, various knowledge points of the actual construction are introduced, so as to really devote to the construction, solve problems, face difficulties, link the mind and hands with physical experience, and obtain a rich system based on architecture and various disciplines in this process.

Teacher Ji

RMIT Royal Melbourne University of Technology Master of Architecture

Founder of Concreate.lab mixed practical research

Mr. Ji is good at comprehensive design of the whole process of the project, from planning, design, construction to operation. After many projects, he advocates that the building is an organic life entity, which can breathe, grow, communicate, and even feedback emotions. After the explosive and even crazy expansion of Chinese cities, we are now very concerned about the research of urban renewal and rural construction.

Project Background

After experiencing the rapid urbanization process, China began to adjust the pace of development. The slogan of "building a beautiful countryside" echoes in China. "New countryside", "pastoral complex" and "experiential agriculture" frequently appear in the public's vision, but what is the real countryside like?

By 2018, China's urbanization rate had exceeded 58%. For most urban residents (especially young people who have never lived in the countryside), what is happening in the countryside seems to be close to and strange to themselves. As the "other half" of the vast land we live in, is the natural field represented by the countryside that has not been occupied by high-density buildings and a large number of people really as beautiful as imagined?

The development and current situation of rural areas in China is not only a window for observing social relations, economic system and population structure, but also a good starting point for discussing the relationship between production activities and nature.

STUDIO DOOO, a tutor for architectural design students studying abroad, hopes to guide participants to start from understanding the current situation, think about the relationship between nature and nature through "rural development", and at the same time convert ideas into design language, so as to rediscover the hand heart relationship in the process of physical construction.

*Bamei Village in Yunnan is one of the typical cases of rural development. After tourists and capital flocked to the village, the life of local residents and the original village space experienced severe turbulence.

Contents and objectives

We hope to achieve three goals through this course:

Know what is really happening around us?

What is a village?

What is the current situation of rural China?

Who is participating in and influencing rural development?

These questions seem simple, but it may be difficult to answer them. The knowledge of urban residents about the countryside comes from media publicity, travel and imagination.

Understand the current situation of rural areas in China

In STUDIO DOOO, we will give participants the opportunity to understand the current situation of China's rural areas in the form of lectures+reading plans+round table discussions. We hope that each participant can study independently, know what is happening around us, and obtain their own interpretation and position.

Learn to convey ideas and attitudes in space language

We encourage diversified ideas and expressions. The content and expression of the design will not be limited in this workshop. As long as it is a spatial language, the design content can be a meeting place, a display place, a storage space, or even a "no one" space. It only needs to be able to convey ideas and positions, and design "voice".

   Participate in the construction process

On the basis of the second part, learn the knowledge of materials, structure and construction, and try to make the design come true. Physical memory can give us stronger psychological feelings.

Course outline

   Design phase:

Part 1. Project Background Introduction and Field Investigation

In different scales and rural contexts, the site is recognized. Collect local materials, study climate and geographical conditions, and ask traditional craftsmen how to use materials and techniques to cope with climate conditions, as well as the special acoustic characteristics of the site, the relationship between the living conditions of indigenous people and tourism development.

Plus 1. Round table discussion: various kinds of rural development in China (including speeches and reading recommendations)

Part 2. Data Collection and Case Study

In the rapid process of urbanization, the countryside stands on the opposite side of urbanization, and tourism and vacation are wantonly eroding the countryside. Considering the physical and non-material elements of the site, the development of the countryside and the space needs of the indigenous people are considered from the social and economic perspective. Everyone reports the research results in Collage and any other form (video, voice, etc.) according to their own research results and independent thinking results.

Plus 2. Round table discussion: sharing the results of on-site research

   Part 3. Group concept design

Manual models and sketches are required, and intensive multi scheme comparison and thinking are required. Portal: Layout of architectural works

Plus 3. Drawing evaluation: share preliminary conceptual design results

Part 4. Large group scheme design

With the support and cooperation of the technical teacher, the feasibility scheme is selected, and the preliminary design of structure selection, material collocation and node design is carried out to screen and prepare for the later in-depth design.

Part 5. Full team deepening design

Material experiment, mechanical design and prefabricated joint design.

   Construction stage:

Part 6. 8-day physical building workshop

(* Please pay attention to the detailed introduction of the subsequent construction workshop)

Part 7. Final achievement expression and public report

Workshop project site

   Guiyuan Town, Xiannvshan, Chongqing

The Xiannv Mountain in Chongqing is a plateau with karst landform characteristics at 2033m above sea level. The site of this project is located in the middle of the Xiannv Mountain in the original town. In the 1980s and 1990s, the villagers in Guiyuan Town were engaged in tobacco planting, which had a destructive effect on the land.

After a period of planting, the land began to become more barren. After 90 years, Xiannv Mountain began to vigorously develop tourism, but villagers far away from the core area could not enjoy more resources. Poverty and serious lack of infrastructure make young people leave their hometown to seek development in cities or scenic spots, and villages begin to decline.

In 2015, the "Guiyuan Town" project started to intervene, and started to activate the rural space, local culture, and the environment and ecology of the village in the way of micro intervention. "Guiyuan Town" is a typical case of design involvement in rural development. After years of work, the original village began to revive. Unlike the traditional capital involvement in the development of tourism, Guiyuan Town retains the texture and ecology of the original village and provides employment for villagers while preserving and reviving local culture, So that people can continue to coexist with the land.
