New York Fashion Institute (FIT)


The New York Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is an internationally famous clothing and art design school. Founded in 1944, it is a public school, but has maintained a good cooperative relationship with private enterprises for many years. At that time, there were only about 100 students, and the related subjects were only scientific management and design. Mortimer C. Ritter, the founder of FIT, hopes that the college will become "a design college like MIT". Through unremitting efforts, FIT has become a famous institution with a rich history that still stands under the impact of New York City's economy.


In 1951, FIT became the second largest state college in New York City. In 1953, the college implemented a free tuition public system. In 1959, the college moved to downtown New York, which is the current address of the college.

FIT is located in the bustling Manhattan area in the center of New York. It has cultivated famous fashion designers and entrepreneurs such as Calvin Klein and David Chu. About 60% of professionals in the New York fashion industry have studied or studied in this school.


In 1970, FIT was officially authorized to issue bachelor's and master's degree certificates. After decades of growth, FIT has 11000 graduates, with more than 30 majors in different fields. A Design Test,a Sewing Test,a Written Essay and a Portfolio Cover Page


   FIT Fashion Design Collection Requirements Part I: Design Test


It refers to the clothing design works of art overseas students, including two small parts.


   1. Project One: Mix and Match Designs


This section includes the source, time, and place of students' inspiration, and gives a brief explanation; In addition, it should also include the display of color ready to wear mixed design, and choose two from jackets, tops, pants and skirts. Front and rear required.


   2. Project Two: Fashion Design Artwork


  1)Draw original designs in color using the medium of your choice. Note original artwork can be computer generated. Design sketches are to be on full length fashion figures with back views.


  2)Include 2 inch x 2 inch fabric swatches on the front of each sketch, identify the type of fabric(e.g.100%wool gabardine)。 And attach the cloth sample on the collection of clothing design!


3) Include a short written explanation of the inspiration


  4)Note Only color copies of your sketches are to be submitted. Note: Only color copies of sketches need to be submitted.

   The second part of the collection requires: Sewing Test tailoring works


Project Three: Garment Samples is the key part of FIT's clothing design collection requirements.


  Submit photographs of a maximum of three garments you have sewn(include front and back views)。 Up to three tailoring ready to wear photos include front and rear parts.


  Samples are to demonstrate knowledge of construction. Originality, creativity, and design aesthetics are valued. Plotting is to be photographed on a person or dress mannequin.


Garments can be created from commercial patterns or you can develop your own patterns or drape the design.


  Garment examples should be sewn. Do not show existing garments that have just been decorated. Do not show existing clothing that has just been decorated.

   Application for FIT Part III: Written Essay Answering Questions


  Answer the following question:


  1.In 250 words or less, provide an example of when your point of view differed? In 250 words or less, give an example of your opinion?


  2.from a teacher or employer during an evaluation of your performance. How did you handle the situation? What should you do if your views diverge from those of your mentor or candidate?


Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answers do not replace the essay/academic history that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.
