A few days ago, I chatted with my student studying Huangyi Service Design. He basically took online classes in the UK this year, but often spent "domestic time" sharing his online creation with me, such as the Grand Challenge recently participated in Huangyi.
Later I learned that RCA Grand Chllange It is an interdisciplinary assistance activity, and also the largest and most valuable academic research project in the world. This year's theme also unexpectedly focused on the epidemic theme - Design for Safety, to solve the problem of real people's livelihood security from the perspective of design.
Combined with this theme and my experience in work and life this year, I also have some thoughts. I can always believe that education and academia are relatively pure land. These places that undertake knowledge inheritance and talent training should be given more sense of responsibility to encourage, guide and create opportunities to explore "real" current events.
So today we are going to talk about how the "Big Brother" Huangyi has made a substantial contribution to the cross boundary medical treatment with the power of art for the problem of COVID-19, which puzzles all mankind!
RCA Grand Chllange solves the problem of the times
The Huangyi Society will develop a "project theme" according to the most concerned topic in the world in that year, and conduct a one-year discipline research in the whole design school. The determination of this topic will also give some official guidance from colleges and universities to students who applied in that year.
This year's theme focuses on the physical and mental health of the world's people under the epidemic - "Design for Safety/Design for Safety". Nearly 400 graduate students and supervisors have formed 77 five person teams, which will conceive and formulate responses to this theme, based on the principle of improving people's lives and practices.
For the time being, Covid-19 is the biggest security threat we face, and the wide spread and long spread of Covid-19 also expose the major defects of human beings in dealing with personal security issues. Whether this problem comes from political governance, business model or human's own resilience, we need to urgently solve it.
77 teams from Huangyi are distributed in 50 countries around the world. They have gathered together online to form a world-class design team. In four consecutive weeks, these teams from different time zones are almost constantly completing the output of creativity to meet the challenge of all mankind.
This time, Huang Yi proposed the subject of safety design to develop new design strategic models to solve complex problems related to people and the environment. In order to achieve this goal, in addition to sophisticated knowledge reserves, It also needs the most "powerful" support from the technical and commercial levels.
CERN, the research partner of this project mentioned by my students above, is the world's largest particle physics laboratory Is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web. Experiments conducted at CERN account for almost half of the achievements in particle physics in the modern world. My student happens to be a physics major, so CERN is the moment that Huangyi gave him to realize his dream.
