Huangyi Interactive Design Major:
Service Design
RCA service design is a two-year discipline, and is also the pioneer of global service design. Its training purpose is to change the experience of customers and the public, with more emphasis on the application of service and experience in design practice.
RCA Royal College of Art It is believed that the discipline knowledge in the field of service design includes the experience of solving problems and changing enterprises and life, and provides better citizen centered effective solutions for complex social problems.
This major is also a cooperation project between RCA and Imperial College. Students of this subject can freely choose the design expertise of other departments of RCA and the MBA and Computer Department courses of Imperial College as part of the elective courses.
The whole curriculum plan provides students with three key research directions:
a. To create a new consumer service model, the focus of the course is to use technology to meet the basic needs of communication, payment, interaction, etc. in complex service industries (such as retail, banking, hotels, etc.).
b. Develop innovation in public services and policies around the themes of transportation, health and education.
c. Conceptual design, students use critical thinking to predict what kind of service and user experience human development needs under the impetus of technology, environment and crisis.
The whole curriculum plan is two-year, divided into six modules. In each module, students will complete their projects with many partners in industries and professional fields to develop innovative solutions to redesign the world around us.
Digital Direction
Digital direction solves new problems in contemporary digital communication and creative economy. RCA focuses on cultivating students' professional skills from four aspects: production/production, direction/guidance, content development/content development, and digital media design/digital media design.
From the perspective of curriculum, it also covers almost all professional skills required for interaction design, including programming, script drawing, dynamic video editing, VR and AR skills, AI conceptual design, multi-dimensional interaction design, etc.
The whole course lasts 15 months and is divided into 4 semesters. In the first two semesters, there were a large number of elective courses created by Huangyi that were inter professional or even inter school cooperation, and the professional skills courses related to the courses were conducted alternately.
In addition, in the second semester, students also need to participate in seminars in all majors of the school to carry out critical thinking training and humanistic history research.
The third semester is mainly for independent projects within students' majors. The school will also provide opportunities for cooperation with creative enterprises and cultural organizations. In the fourth semester, students are completely focused on the final independent project research.
The plan of the whole course is to encourage the cultivation of students' interdisciplinary thinking, ability and practice. Huangyi also provides each student with an independent working area of the studio. In addition to the technical support of professional teachers, it is also equipped with the world's most advanced computer studio and various equipment for printing, 3D printing and digital image production.
Information Experience Design
As one of the most popular majors in RCA, Information Experience Design (IED) has a broader definition than traditional interaction design. The course advocates to train students to use any comprehensive design means to convey information, and mobilize all senses and interaction methods, including sound and moving images, to design devices or experience tools.
RCA believes that in this era of rapid development of science and technology, the existing training methods and technical means limit the development of practitioners. We should adopt digital and philosophical thinking methods, and comprehensively use a wide range of media, materials and equipment to conduct design research for future development.
As stated by IED, their curriculum design and training direction also exceed the existing fields and visual concepts, aiming to achieve the transformation of designers' personal and social forms. The whole course lasts for two years and is divided into three specific directions at the beginning of application: Moving Image Design/Mobile Image Design, Sound Design/Sound Design, and Experimental Design/Experimental Design.
The specific curriculum will also vary according to three different training directions. On the whole, in the first year, students were mainly provided with training on relevant theories and skills, and promoted their ability to learn relevant skills through short-term practical projects and seminars;
In the second year, students will supplement the knowledge framework through Huang Yi's Critical and Historical Studies (CHS) to establish a coherent relationship between theory and practice.
In addition, each student in these two academic years will have his or her own personal tutor. Each semester, he or she will organize in-depth personal tutoring for specific projects with the tutor, and complete the designated projects in this way.
