University of Iowa Art Course Work
Students majoring in art receive a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. All students begin with the BA program.
The BA program provides a foundation for art history and helps to understand the formal tradition and contemporary practice of studio art. Students take art courses in school studios, including animation, ceramics, graphic design, 3D design, drawing, intermediary, jewelry and metal art, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Program
Students who are interested in working intensively in a specific studio art discipline can apply for the BFA project through a process called "permission". In this process, teachers assess students' readiness for BFA learning. If you apply and are accepted by BFA, you will complete the additional work of studio art and display your works before graduation.
BA with teacher's license

University of Iowa Art Entrance Requirements
All art majors need to meet the admission requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Admission to the Bachelor of Arts degree is selective, and interested students must first enter the Bachelor of Arts degree. Once accepted, students should consult their teacher advisors in the main studio art field for guidance on applying for the BFA program.

In addition to nearly 500 student organizations, Iowa students choose from a number of life and learning communities, study abroad programs, and undergraduate research opportunities.

University of Iowa faculty, facilities and resources
The Western Art Museum opened in 2006 and was flooded in 2008. After large-scale renovation, the building reopened in January 2012. This extraordinary facility was designed by New York architect Steven Holl and has won many architectural awards.
Stephen Hall Architects and BNIM Architects jointly designed an amazing visual art building, which opened in autumn 2016. This building is adjacent to the West Art Building, replacing the 1935 Art Building which was severely damaged in the flood on the campus of the University of Iowa in June 2008.
