Reasons for Studying Film Editing and Directing Abroad

In the United States, the film industry is highly mature.

Therefore, many Chinese film industry practitioners send their children to the United States to study film. For example, Zhang Mo, the daughter of the famous director Zhang Yimou, graduated from New York University with a major in screenwriting and directing. Liu Yulin, the daughter of well-known screenwriter Liu Zhenyun, also studied as a screenwriter and director at New York University. Wang Wenya, the daughter of Wang Zhonglei, president of Huayi Brothers, studied at the College of Art and Design Center.

The second reason is that there are many first-class film schools in the United States, which is not like a single wooden bridge crowded by thousands of people in the art examination

There are only a few of the best film majors in China, and they are concentrated in Beijing. However, the number of applicants has already exceeded six figures, and is increasing every year. The competition is very strong, and the requirements for cultural courses are also very high. Many majors have exceeded the key score line of the college entrance examination.

However, the distribution of educational resources in the United States is relatively average, with many universities offering film majors, American Film Professional Ranking There is also a small gap between middle schools and colleges. Among the top 30 film schools in the United States, even the schools ranking lower are also very good. For example, the Los Angeles Film Academy, located in the heart of Hollywood, ranked only 28 on the list. There are also a large number of alumni emerging in the industry, including the cinematographer Brandon Trost, who has won the Best Photography Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He was the director of photography for the film The Interview. The film tells the story of Dave, the host, and Aaron, the producer, who went to North Korea to interview, and caused serious warnings from North Korea. And Martin Penza, the editor of the film Dallas Buyers Club. Ariana Miller, who worked as a digital synthesizer in the Hollywood blockbusters Star Wars, X-Men, and Captain America.

Reason 3: There are many opportunities to practice in the American theater team, and I can contact a large number of high-level collaborators

In American universities, film teaching attaches great importance to practical operation. College students will organize many shooting and creative teams, so during the study period, there are many opportunities to get in touch with the film crew, and they are also highly participatory. They even have to take the lead in setting up a team to shoot short film assignments. In recent years in college, you have become a very mature director/screenwriter/photographer/editor, It is far better than many domestic schools' teaching on paper. After graduation, most of the work will start from scratch.

In addition, the United States is the most developed region in the global film industry, and also the holy land of many film students. Studying and practicing here, you can meet industry elites from all over the world. Many of the older generation who are already famous in China will also study in the United States to learn more advanced film art and technology. For example, Ren Chong and Hu Ge, the big stars, all studied film in American universities, and were able to contact with such industry elites during their college years. Naturally, they could collide and produce different sparks, and their professional level could also be greatly improved.

If you choose to work in the American film industry, your income is still considerable, especially for all kinds of technical jobs, such as editing, color mixing, photography, etc. In addition, there are relevant industry associations and trade unions in the United States, which can protect the rights and interests of practitioners. In contrast, domestic film industry practitioners may have high incomes, but their social rights are really no different from migrant workers.

Of course, if you don't like to stay in the United States, you can also choose to return to work. With the rapid development of China's film industry, the domestic film industry is also in urgent need of excellent talents. After returning to China, most of the film majors can work in major domestic film and television companies, and their income and development are very good.
