June is a season of choice. It belongs to the third year of senior high school alone. The college entrance examination has come and gone. Will you study abroad after the college entrance examination? Many students want to choose to study abroad as a way after the college entrance examination. In the face of all kinds of worries and sorrows of students, Mr. Yu Bochen, a natural light art study abroad institution, explains the requirements for studying abroad after the college entrance examination and whether to study abroad after the college entrance examination?
On March 29, 2019, the Ministry of Education officially released Notice of the Ministry of Education on Announcing the Record and Approval Results of Undergraduate Majors in Regular Institutions of Higher Learning in 2018 Among them, more than 100 colleges and universities have added new majors related to art and design, and these new majors are expected to officially start enrollment in 2019 or 2020. Among them, there is no lack of key selection points for art students - China Communication University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China Academy of Traditional Opera and other domestic top art colleges:

Hundreds of domestic colleges and universities have added new majors related to art and design (part)
Although the number of newly opened art and design colleges in China is increasing, what is "interesting" is that from June to August every year Art study institutions The busiest time is the peak season for art study abroad. At this time of year, students will make a life choice very carefully. In addition to domestic universities, art study abroad is also one of the key options for many students and parents.
In June and July every year, I will receive more concentrated inquiries from students such as:
"If I fail in the college entrance examination this time, and I don't want to go back to school, can I go abroad? Or should I choose a university in China to study for one or two years before going out?"
"Teacher, do you think it is necessary for me to finish college in China before going abroad?"
"Now that I have finished my freshman and sophomore year, I want to go abroad, but it's a pity that I don't finish my domestic undergraduate course."
Today, Yu Bochen will answer these questions one by one:
1. Did not do well in the college entrance examination and wanted to study abroad
"If I fail in the college entrance examination this time, and I don't want to go back to school, can I go abroad? Or can I choose a university at home and study for one or two years before going out?"
As for the situation that the college entrance examination is not good, whether studying abroad or studying in a junior college, first of all, I want to tell you seriously that you can choose to go abroad, but, Studying abroad for art is definitely not the "retreat" of the national college entrance examination! It is a choice for future life. It has a level relationship with any school that volunteers for the college entrance examination, rather than a "last resort".
In my usual consultation, I found that there are still a certain number of students and parents who will consider studying abroad as a way out for their children. In fact, this idea is misunderstood. To be serious, if you still hold this idea, the "retreat" you choose will not ultimately point to an excellent university.
We can take Parsons, the world's third-largest art school, as an example. The most common BFA degree applications in art design undergraduate applications are:
TOEFL (IB) 92, IELTS 7.0, PTE 63, language requirements alone have stopped some students. It is very difficult for most students to reach 7.0 in the first IELTS exam even in the peak learning state of the college entrance examination.

Next comes the collection of works. Almost all domestic undergraduate students majoring in art and design are screened by taking the art examination. Different from the domestic art examination, the application screening mechanism of foreign art colleges is mainly through Portfolio 。
Compared with the focus on foundation and skills in the domestic art examination, the collection of works used for applying for art study abroad is more focused on students Innovative thinking and creative consciousness This is particularly evident at the undergraduate application stage. For foreign art schools, there is no fixed answer to the collection of works, nor a fixed routine or template.
What kind of creativity or idea is excellent and attractive? In fact, it is difficult to give a specific answer to this question. Therefore, the collection of works is not a technical demonstration of works that can be followed, but a comprehensive investigation of the overall artistic quality of students.
Take a student in the application season of Natural Light 2019 as an example. This student was studying in the High School Affiliated to the Academy of Fine Arts in China. When interviewing her, she explained that the teaching mode of Natural Light is very different from that of domestic schools.
In painting class, domestic teachers especially emphasize students' basic shaping ability. They will look at every stroke carefully. If students draw wrong, they will be asked to erase and redraw. When commenting on each assignment, the works drawn by everyone are almost the same, with the same light and shadow, the same angle, the same brushwork and expression.
But in natural light, the student felt very different. Even in the observational painting course, the teacher of natural light never gave her a very fixed and restrictive topic. Instead, she guided her to think about the theme of creation while teaching, and used this as a starting point to give creative play. While laying the foundation of painting ability, It also fosters her special way of observation and awareness of thinking from multiple perspectives.
There are different emphases on the investigation of art works at home and abroad. When preparing the application for art study abroad, in addition to the collection of works, sometimes there are some additional contents that need special attention.
As we all know, Parsons not only requires students to complete works collection, but also requires students to complete Parsons Challenge, which is basically equivalent to completing two sets of works collection, one large and one small. If the last additional question on the math test paper can be given up under unavoidable circumstances, then for art students, such as Parsons challenge, RISD Assignment and other application requirements are one Additional questions that cannot be ignored but also need to go all out 。

Secondly, "choose a university at random in China and go out after one or two years". Most students and parents with this mentality are concentrated in "Just finished the college entrance examination" to "sophomore" For many students, this time interval is particularly easy to ignore and slack off.
On the one hand, we have just experienced the college entrance examination, and think that this period of time is a very good break; On the other hand, both parents and children tend to think that "it is still early", and children can relax for a while before they start to consider the subsequent development and options.
When we convert the "casual reading of one or two years" into the art study application cycle, we will find that we are almost two students. Generally speaking, the normal application period for an art student abroad is 10-15 months. If the time is relatively urgent, it may be reduced to 4-6 months; For younger students, that is, those who do long-term planning, it will not exceed 2 years. That is to say, when you are still a freshman or a sophomore, there are already 1-2 students who have successfully gone abroad and have finished their freshman or sophomore studies abroad.
At that time, we had to face a serious problem: In terms of time cost, can you read it freely for 1-2 years? So, when you plan to study in art after the college entrance examination, my advice is:
First of all, it must be clear that art study abroad is not a "retreat" from the college entrance examination. They just apply for different schools with different application modes;
Secondly, think clearly whether you have a preliminary demand or intention for your art study abroad;
Finally, once you have the intention of studying in the arts, you must plan as soon as possible. You should know that most master's degrees in Britain are one-year. If you hold the attitude of "reading casually for one or two years first", you may accidentally miss a master's degree.

2. Can I study abroad after college entrance examination
"Is it necessary for me to finish college in China before going out?"
This kind of students can be seen as a "derivative" of the previous class of students. In fact, when Bochen went to college, he had already met students with similar ideas. In particular, many parents prefer to go out after finishing undergraduate education in China, believing that the domestic undergraduate education foundation is solid, and the overseas undergraduate teaching environment is loose, which is not suitable for students to lay a foundation, and students may return after learning nothing.
As for the advantages and disadvantages of teaching at home and abroad, no educator can actually give a very definite biased answer, especially when combining different students with different backgrounds. If I want to say the advantages of domestic teaching, I can say 100, but if I want to say the advantages of studying abroad, I can also say no less than 100. Then the key is: What is your orientation for domestic teaching? Who is more valuable for you to study at home or abroad?
Consider first Professional factors If you choose a major with high cultural characteristics, such as ceramics, calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, etc., I actually do not recommend that you study abroad. After all, these majors have very strong cultural characteristics, and it is difficult to meet suitable majors abroad, and it is also difficult to obtain good development.
However, if you choose some very new majors, such as Design Innovation Department, human-computer interaction, new media art, installation art, data visualization, global innovative design, comprehensive art, biological design and other majors, it is difficult for them to find highly adaptable majors in China, then I suggest that students who choose such majors can consider studying in art.
Taking comprehensive design/integrated design as an example, the biggest feature of this major is that it is extremely interdisciplinary, integrating almost all the art design majors you can think of. It does not have a particularly prominent professional focus, because its focus is "interdisciplinary". Such majors cannot be found in China. If you are very interested in such majors, I would recommend you to study abroad.
Of course, there is a special suggestion in this part. If you are not a person with strong self-care ability and planning awareness, for example, at present I still rely on my family. Many decisions, judgments or life plans need help from my parents . It is also feasible for such students to choose one or two semesters in domestic universities as a transition. You can use this time to see if you can adapt to living alone without your family, and if you can plan your own pace of study and life, but the time should not be too long.
The foreign teaching environment is very open and free. Especially during freshman and sophomore years, students will have many opportunities to participate in studio based or project based courses. These courses have very high requirements for students' autonomy. Short projects generally take 1-2 weeks, while long-term projects may take 1-2 months, All you need to do is arrange yourself or cooperate to complete an independent project.
In such a project, students' Especially high degree of freedom The teacher will give students enough space to plan independently. How to work with partners in studio? How to independently plan the creation process? How to complete the original plan in different time nodes in a planned way? It needs you to achieve it yourself.
For example, a student we interviewed two days ago told us that, compared with domestic teaching, under the overseas teaching mode focused by Natural Light, the role of teachers in the creation of student works is not supervisor or teacher, but director and person who puts forward suggestions. Give some guiding help when you need it.
In the process of the project, the teacher paid great attention to Shaping Students' "Self Consciousness" , because self-awareness is the beginning of unique creativity and ideas. Therefore, the teacher will not interfere with your direction or ideas. He will only share his views and ideas with you as a communicator or guide, but the final results and plans, all of which need you to complete independently without relying too much on others.
This kind of teaching environment is the most favorable learning way for students with a high sense of independent planning. Students have a very high space for free development, and can carry out professional inquiry independently. At the same time, they can better reflect on themselves, find their own characteristics, and learn and develop more in combination with their own.

3. "Now that I have finished my freshman/sophomore year, I want to go abroad, but it's a pity that I don't finish my domestic undergraduate degree."
For students who have this idea, Yu Bochen wants to ask them a question: What are you regretting?
We have all heard a word - "giving up". Giving up is not only in the process of collection or sorting, but also in our work and When planning for the future, "disconnection" is also a very important skill.
Studying abroad in the arts also requires you to have a strong ability of "breaking away", planning, judging, choosing and prioritizing. I have seen too many students with this mentality in my daily consultation. I feel that I have already started to study in universities in China. It would be a pity if I didn't finish it.
Yu Bochen respects each student's personal ideas, but also wishes to remind everyone that if you have decided to study abroad after finishing college in China, you must Make good use of the four years of college, plan the time, reasonably arrange and purposefully complete the language examination, portfolio production, application documents, etc. in advance.
The art and design colleges that want to be good, in contrast, are absolutely full and perfect preparatory work. Ziyi, who applied for Natural Light in 2019, has received an offer from RCA Graphic Design. Her collection of works has been prepared for one and a half years, but the full preparation period also allows her to have more opportunities and play through the collection, Show your attitude towards graphic design.
Her collection of works includes 8 large and small project works, integrating physics, pure art, jewelry, interactive devices, clothing design, industrial design, products, sound art, animation, human machinery, packaging, behavioral art, font design, architectural space, user experience, book binding, behavioral marketing, interactive design, etc., with more than 20 majors.
During the creation of her portfolio, she visited France, Germany, the United States, Sweden and other places to do research. With in-depth thinking on the creation of the portfolio and highly interdisciplinary content, she won the RCA graphic design professional offer on a zero basis.
Ziyi's success in getting the RCA offer was not an accident, but she had planned her future application from the very beginning. She was very clear about where her weak links were. Therefore, when she initially communicated with the teacher, she had reached a consensus on the curriculum plan with the teacher. The following courses are also completed according to the plan. We can communicate with teachers at any time and keep a positive state at any time.
Summary of the problems of studying abroad after the college entrance examination:
Whether studying abroad directly after the college entrance examination or taking an undergraduate course in China as a link, each has its advantages and disadvantages. Especially when we combine different students' personal backgrounds, many situations will become complicated.
At this time, especially at the end of the college entrance examination, Yu Bochen wanted to remind everyone that we should not choose to study abroad in the arts because the "brain fever" is often not considered. Studying abroad in the arts is not the way out of college entrance examination. Studying abroad in the arts also needs to be planned and arranged for preparation and planning. Both parents and children need to have clear education and goals, clear their own needs and intentions, and consider future planning in combination with their own conditions.
