Globalization and new production technologies have made many traditional handicraft communities struggle under the circumstances of declining demand for their products and facing an uncertain future.
In the design management project of Pratt College, a group of graduate students combined their enthusiasm for fashion and design with the business skills they learned in Pratt College to create a new digital platform to promote cooperation between local craftsmen in Ecuador and global designers. The art graduate group used the strategic framework learned in the design management project to organize their work, including research on community and market challenges, and in-depth interviews with business representatives, designers, craftsmen and others in the United States and Ecuador.
In February this year, the students of Pratt Art College went to Cuenca, Ecuador, where they were invited to make a report on the project of Ades. This is a national design and craft conference organized by the Ecuadorian Handicraft and Folk Art Center (CIDAP).
