Rhode Island School of Design RISD

Part One

College introduction from admissions officer

Dora introduced Rhode Island School of Design RISD In her eyes, RISD is an art school focusing on enlightening experiments and basic education. In her words, it is "Experimental and Foundation".

Let's talk about Foundation first. RISD's emphasis on basics is actually very famous in art schools If you open the homepage of one of their majors and click on the course page, you will find that the first semester is full of foundation courses, basic painting, basic design, basic skills that RISD attaches great importance to. The foundation is stable, and then the creativity can be better implemented.

The experimental part, RISD's student works, has always been famous for its unconstrained sense of art. The school encourages students to try new materials and new ways. (This avant-garde pioneering spirit is also reflected in the enrollment. Let's talk more about it later!)

Some Features of RISD in Rhode Island School of Design

01 Focus on tradition

"Tradition" is what RISD attaches great importance to. Innovation is important, but you need to learn all the traditional skills. Starting from the most basic place, your creativity will be more secure.

  02 Unique Community

Dora told everyone that what they need to do in RISD is to explore the uniqueness of students. She hopes to see "unique mind and unique works". What RISD pursues is that all kinds of interesting people get together, rather than everyone get together and become interesting.

In the final analysis, art is express individuality, and self expression is what RISD pursues, rather than a work of a thousand people.

  03 Peer with peer

The communication between different majors in the same grade, different grades in the same major, high and low ages, and the communication between undergraduate and master students all give RISD students more inspirational triggers.

Dora didn't say much about this part, and really didn't need to say anything. This is an aggressive picture, and I understand everything

Part Two

What you most want to hear

About enrollment

Natural light gives you a directory index first!

01 About Portfolio

02 Academic

03 Common application essay

04 The RISD assignment

        01 About Portfolio

(The whole paragraph would like to be marked in red, or stand beside your ears and tell you that you don't want to leave a word! It's very important!)

Let's talk about the collection of works first, number Above is 12-20 individual creative works of art. Dora specially reminds that, Must be a single page submission One work per page! And cannot be repeated! And in the subsequent communication, Dora also said RISD attaches great importance to the diversity of students ! You will not suffer if you can submit more diversified works!

And then there's content , "Don't let technical skills cover your personal voice"! Write it down and remember it! Many students like to show off their skills and basic skills, but there is no personal expression. No matter how well you paint, the sculpture is really made, and the large aperture telephoto lens makes the birds vivid. Without personal expression, it is not art!

Dora said RISD attaches great importance to personality and individuality Is to hope that Collection of Art Studied Abroad See the students' personal emotions and thoughts. It can't be said that technology is not important, but technology alone is not enough to get an offer. To sum up, natural light thinks that the most perfect solution formula should be: technical skills+personality=Perfect portfolio

And then, What kind of art overseas works collection is unacceptable Is a collection of works that RISD does not welcome. In fact, the answer is the same as above: refuse to imitate, refuse to have something. It's like, is the Qingming River Map fierce? But take the copied Qingming River Map to apply. Even if the painting is identical, the Palace Museum can't recognize it and put it on display. You may not pass.

As mentioned above, unique originality and bold and creative self-expression are the most powerful offer trump cards.

And then, how to improve your portfolio ? First, Dora gave a website: Portfolios.risd, edu, which contains RISD's collection of overseas art works, all of which are public , (In the full key tweets, only giant fonts can be used to grab a wave of attention...)

(one tips: Today, all the dry goods from the admissions officer are full of content, and there are no pictures. I suggest you read them carefully after collecting them! And the interview recording has been made into a video mode to facilitate you to find the information you want. It is convenient to fast forward and pause. Students who want to can find Natural Light Art to study abroad.)

And then there! Winter program, it is also very helpful to take part in the first round, contact the teachers of RISD in advance, exchange your ideas with them, and listen to their opinions.

What should I do if I don't want to go far or have no time? Dora gave three more websites:

precollege.risd.,edu

portfolioday.,net

aicad.slideroom.,com

(The website suffix can be opened after removing the comma -- natural light that breaks the heart)

These three can complete the online portfolio review of admissions officers! Upload your portfolio here, and the website will help you connect with the college admissions officer, and directly get the opinions of the admissions officer's portfolio, which is very useful! (Look at the last website. Hehe, an old friend of Partner ArtOne~)

(See the recording for this part, starting from 2:40)

   02 Academic

The best high school performance is average B+, GPA is about 3.3, SAT and ACT are very important, and will pay more attention to the reading section scores, TOEFL93, IELTS6.5.

These are hard standards, but Chris told Natural Light that when he communicated with Dora before, he asked questions about the performance, and the performance was not enough, which is not good, but the language performance is very good, which can improve your application competitiveness, so children who still have time to score, do not give up!

(There is a recording! You can ask for it on demand)

   03 Common application essay

   (CAE for short)

Dora said that many students try hard to write how much they love art, how much they like RISD, and how keen they are on their subjects, but these! This is not something CAE needs to show! Are you scared!

Natural light used to think that this essay should be like PS, showing sincerity, love, experience and talent! But! no yes! Wrong! CAE should talk more about itself, and add information that portfolio cannot show. Dora clearly said that, I want to listen to students tell their own stories, views and ideas

   04 the RISD assignment

This "assignment" is a special provision of RISD, which is not available in other schools. RISD features the independent proposition of RISD, which has always been a very special application item, from the previous bicycle to the deconstruction, light, and plastic just changed last year.

However, in Chris's conversation with Dora, one of the important information he got was:“ Focus on the concept

The proposition given by Rhode Island is not a restrictive noun! no It's a concept! Students should start from the concept, find their own inspiration, and complete their own projects!

Another thing is, focus on detail and process. I believe that the babies with natural light must be familiar with it. The teachers are familiar with the process and details!

But! Yes! It doesn't mean how long it took you to finish the project RISD doesn't care whether you use it for a month or a year, but the details!

This is the exclusive interview with Dora, the RISD admissions officer, where the natural light is sorted out. I hope that this gift can be enjoyed by everyone, and that everything goes well with your application. All children who have gone abroad will go well in the future!
