The undergraduate film major is a four-year discipline, which cultivates students to focus on the history, theory and critical research of films, and systematically share films as an art form and a form of popular culture.

The film course is divided into four levels, and students need to complete different levels of courses to achieve a comprehensive and professional purpose. The first level is the five core courses of this discipline, which are in turn: Introduction to Film Science, Film History, Art Theory, and Advanced Seminar.


The second level is a small seminar, which helps students to deeply study specific topics in film directors, genres, cinemas, technology, and special topics. This section changes every semester. Recent topics include American films in the 1960s, motion pictures, Korean cinemas, and 4D special effects.


The third level is a large-scale lecture course (also a mode of watching films before discussing them), which teaches students to understand the history of American and international films. The autumn course is mainly focused on films before 1960, and the spring course is focused on new films since 1960.


The fourth level is a practical course, which requires students to practice with real output in the fields of screenwriting, film review, film production and other active image production modes (such as new media).


In addition to these four levels, other courses include literature courses and elective courses. The proportion of credits is relatively high. The elective courses mainly focus on film production, creative writing, entertainment and media technology.

3. Collection of works (choose one of the three forms)

a. Video: no more than 5 minutes of complete narrative works;

b. Picture: 10-15 pieces, no restriction on presentation

c. Writing: 6 pages of creative writing, including a complete short story, movie script or stage play


4. 2 letters of recommendation

NYU Tisch's postgraduate courses are very distinctive, emphasizing that students learn while doing in a real work environment, and also developed an intensive curriculum plan for students. Each academic year should be based on real output.

In the three years of graduate stage, each student should make at least four short films and complete a thesis project.
