As art majors become more and more valued and American art studies become more and more popular, more and more students go to the United States to study art. The United States has indeed provided many resources and opportunities for art students to study abroad. Its artistic education achievements are mainly in the field of modern art, with the largest number of majors in the world. In addition, American education has always focused on the cultivation of application and innovation ability. The school provides students with various internship or work opportunities, so that professional knowledge can be maximized in practice.
A. American art students should have works of art. This is the most important part of applying for art majors in American universities, that is, to apply for an art major, you must have the corresponding art works of that major. For example, if you want to apply for a photography major, you should have photography works. If your works have won a prize, of course, it is more beneficial to apply for art study abroad; Or if you want to apply for sculpture major, you should send your most proud sculpture works to the school you want to apply for. When applying, it is better to compile art works and send them in a collection, which will be more helpful to the application.
University transcripts and bachelor's degree are required. Applicants should provide their undergraduate transcripts (GPA) and bachelor's degrees. The GPA should not be lower than 2.7 to prove that he is a good student during his schooling. In addition, a four-year bachelor's degree is required.

A personal statement (P.S.) and three letters of recommendation are required. The personal statement is similar to those applying for other majors. The recommendation letter should be written by the professor or professional who has taught you, usually three or four letters.
Standardized examination is required. Generally, only TOEFL scores are required to apply for art majors in American universities, and the score requirements are quite different from those for applying for graduate schools in American universities, which can be accepted if the score is more than 90. Generally, GRE scores are not required (depending on the requirements of specific schools), but it is better to have GRE scores.
B. To apply for foreign art majors, students need to: first, provide the school with a collection of works before applying for art majors. Students applying for painting, photography and design majors should make a high-precision plane atlas; Students applying for music majors need to record CDs. Secondly, unlike ordinary schools that require students to provide three letters of recommendation, art schools only require students to provide one letter of recommendation, because art schools in the United States and Canada value students' personal ability more. In addition, prepare for the interview in a targeted way. In the whole process of applying for art majors, interview is very important, but it is also difficult to prepare. Students should contact the school and professors in advance to understand the school's ideas and professors' views on art. Only when they master these contents can they have a clear target in the interview. Finally, personal statements are less important. When making personal statements, students should focus on their own creative thinking and creative ability.
C. Generally speaking, art majors in American universities are mainly divided into the following eight categories: ceramics, graphic design, industrial design, multimedia/visual communication, painting/drawing, photography, printing and sculpture.

D. There are three difficulties for art students to go abroad for art study, such as difficult language, expensive tuition and difficult scholarship application.
First, the language barrier is sad. For domestic art majors, their language proficiency is generally poor due to the curriculum and time allocation. Therefore, for many students majoring in art and design, English level is a threshold for them to apply for college. According to experts, students who choose to study in the UK arts know that art colleges have high basic requirements for students. Generally, IELTS scores are required to be more than 6.5 points, and the average undergraduate credit should be more than 80 points. When enrolling students in art schools in the United States, students are required to have good academic performance and take corresponding standard examinations; TOEFL and SAT are required for undergraduate application, and TOEFL and GRE/GMAT are required for master application. For art colleges, generally speaking, TOEFL scores of at least l550 are required for language. Students must strengthen their English learning while learning their major well.
Second, the tuition is expensive. There are art schools and departments in comprehensive universities as well as specialized art schools in the UK. Some public art colleges, such as the London University of the Arts, have very strict requirements on the source of students, with tuition fees ranging from 8000 to 10000 pounds per year. The tuition fees of public universities in the United States are generally about 15000 to 25000 dollars, and private universities are generally about 30000 to 40000 dollars. Therefore, for students majoring in art, the requirements for economic strength are very high. Third, it is difficult to apply for scholarships. It is very difficult to apply for scholarships for arts majors. Almost all American and Canadian art colleges have the words "fierce scholarship competition" in their admission notes. Scholarships for art schools in the United States and Canada are mainly for domestic students, and it is very difficult for international students to obtain scholarships.
E. Before deciding on the application, the following should be done:
1. List the school selection scheme. When choosing an application institution, students should choose according to their existing artistic style and own conditions, in combination with the educational policy of the institution, the style of professors and admission conditions. This is more targeted.
2. Screening individual works. According to the different requirements of each college, the selection, arrangement and preparation of the collection of works in the application materials are the most important. Once the basic conditions such as TOEFL scores and GPA are met, the collection of works is the top priority for applying to the American Academy of Arts. Not the same collection of works can be applied to all schools. Some schools require students to have interdisciplinary ability, while others require professional expertise. Which works should appear in the application materials and the order of arrangement will affect the application results.
3. Strengthen the writing part. Artist Statement - The creation of self description is also a very important part of the application materials. How to find a theoretical foothold for their works is crucial for the application of American art schools. This is also one of the weakest links for Chinese students. The weakness of English is only one aspect. The teaching mode of American art education, supplemented by art history, philosophy and psychology, has created a unique creative concept for each American art candidate when applying. Creativity is jointly expressed through the performance of the collection of works and the language description of Artist Statement Creation Readme, and creativity is almost a common yardstick for each art school when enrolling students. If you raise the theoretical level of your portfolio, it is another important factor for successful application.
4. Pay attention to the cost of studying abroad. The tuition fees of some public universities in the United States are not high. Some colleges and universities provide a co op education model, where students take classes while internships in design companies and enterprises. The income is enough to meet the tuition and living expenses. There are also very good private schools that give full awards to all enrolled graduate students, including free tuition and living allowance, but students require 20 hours of teaching or research work per week. Although such institutions are rare, students with outstanding majors should try to apply.
5. Remedy the deficiencies in English. Some students have good professional conditions, but their English is not up to standard. This is not uncommon among our art students. There are some art schools in the United States that offer conditional admission. You can go to the United States for English training, pass the exam, and formally start professional courses when your grades meet the requirements of the class. The prerequisite is that all other materials meet the admission requirements, and candidates with excellent professional performance and some English deficiency can consider such institutions.
