Bufan, a student of Natural Light 2019/2020 BTEC Preparatory Program, applied for British product industrial design and was admitted to Coventry University and Loughborough University.

When I was young, I worked with my father to make handicrafts, and I buried a big dream of "changing the world", "Be picky "His attitude towards life and higher requirements for quality are the original intention and constant motivation for him to choose product design. Driven by the needs of professional art teaching, he chose BTEC Art Design Foundation Course as his enhanced overseas study plan. When he met a versatile professional teacher, he embarked on the road of seamless linking to famous schools!


In one year's time, three portfolio projects were implemented in life with full design enthusiasm, and his creativity was used to bring changes to people or cats around him. This was the only rule he always adhered to in his creation, and all these made all surprises inevitable!


   1. I "finished" my freshman year at home


I have been particularly interested in handicrafts since childhood. My father is an architectural designer, and he will take me to make some small sofas, chairs, vases at home So I decided early on that I must engage in the field related to art in the future.

I have always been learning painting and art. BTEC courses were also offered in my former international high school, but there is a lack of a systematic art teaching method and I can't learn what I really want to learn.


So I choose to go to a more professional college that can help me achieve my goals. So I came to Natural Light and chose Natural Light BTEC Art Design Foundation Program.


Because of my previous experience in handcraft and "furniture design", I originally wanted to choose the professional direction of home design, but in the process of communication with teachers, I found that product design is the direction I really like.


The major of product design in top art schools is all inclusive, involving every bit of life. I can start from my own life, find and solve problems, which is very consistent with my dream of "changing the world"!

The BTEC courses of natural light completely correspond to the learning methods of overseas art colleges. In consideration of my English based application needs, the teacher developed a study plan for me, which is the BTEC Level 4 art course. Next, I started a one-year "freshman" life at home


   2. My teacher is omnipotent


My professional teacher is a senior tutor of natural light works that is officially certified by BTEC. He has nothing to say about his professional ability. He can do rendering, modeling, handcraft, drawing, design, etc It seems that there is nothing he can't do. He can teach me some skills and tricks in all aspects.


Usually when I don't have classes, we also discuss excellent product design cases together and exchange life, ideas and experience with him. For me, teachers are more like friends and seniors, and I can learn from him the accumulation of a mature product designer.


Of course, teachers are also strict. He will take me to do many manual courses, such as giving me a topic, asking me to make 20 different kinds of tableware, around the ideas that I want to express, using foam board and flower arrangement mud to polish into different shapes of knives and forks During this period of time, my practical ability has been greatly improved.

The teacher's greatest help to me is to lead me into the door of the product designer. Previously, I always thought about a theme, but I didn't know how to present it. The teacher asked me to find problems for myself. For example, I thought about how to improve and optimize products from these perspectives when I felt that they were inconvenient, inappropriate, and poorly used.


Then he took me step by step to do brainstorming, research around the theme, do mind mapping, and gradually complete a presentation about myself.


This complete design process will not only affect my current collection of works, but also be very useful after I successfully enrolled in overseas universities and even became a real product designer.


   3. Changing the world starts with being a good "shovel shit officer"


The first project of my portfolio is for my "cat owner". I believe that every officer who shovels excrement knows that the most troublesome thing is to shovel excrement for the master.


I bought an electronic cat litter basin before, but there are still some big drawbacks, such as too much noise, inconvenient socket movement, large volume, danger in operation, and easy to get stuck in the cat.


Focusing on these problems, I thought of making a perfect litter basin that both my cat and I are satisfied with.

Finally, my finished product retains the physical operation principle of the electronic cat litter basin, but the internal structure is completely manually operated, which solves the security problem. In terms of shape, after investigating cats' preferences, the round shape is their most reassuring and favorite appearance, so I chose the ball shape, which covers a relatively small area.


With the successful experience of the first project and the second project, I also chose to start from myself to find the problems in my current life. I had a disease before and often had to take some medicine with me, which also meant that I needed to drink water and take medicine at a fixed time. But in fact, we can't always find the water for delivery around us.


Therefore, I designed a more humanized kit. Its overall structure is to combine the water cup with the medicine box. At the same time, I have also made a series of optimization on the functions of drug classification and processing. For example, we can press different buttons to automatically pop up the corresponding drugs; Secondly, the medicine cutter and grinder are also added to the kit, which can be set and processed into different drug sizes, enough to cope with the medication problems of users of different ages, including children and the elderly.


In addition to the above two projects, I am now creating the most difficult and complicated project since I prepared my portfolio. The overall style is an interdisciplinary home interaction device, which is derived from the perception during the recent epidemic. I hope to create a group of "benches" that can interact in the street to alert people to the dangers of the epidemic.


   4. Some suggestions for you


Although I have received direct undergraduate offers from several universities this year, I should not choose to enroll. In addition to considering the epidemic situation, I have a bigger dream, which is to continue to apply for my dream school - Central Saint Martin after completing this collection project.


So, like everyone else, I am still on the way to pursue my dreams. As for my advice to you, I was very lucky to choose the natural light BTEC course at that time. In addition to greatly improving my professional ability, this year's course also helped me adapt to my freshman life in overseas art schools in advance, saving time and cost of going to preparatory courses overseas at this stage.


If you are like me, the goal is Apply for studying in British industrial design Undergraduate, and need to lay the foundation for systematic professional teaching methods.
