The course of Architecture Department of Syracuse University introduces students to new models, methods and practices of architecture, and strives to develop criticism and practical inquiry lines that have a positive impact on the future of this discipline.    First year:

Teachers of the Design and Performance course introduce students to new methods of observing and responding to the building environment. Through painting, analysis, multimedia work and design exercises, students learn to create space and form by manipulating the site, procedures, experience and architecture.


   Second year of architecture course:

The second year of the architecture course introduces students to imago, typology and design theory as they begin to develop personal design methodologies. In the third year, more complex studio challenges and architectural technology courses help students develop integrated architectural design. In the third and fourth years, students have the opportunity to expand their skills by studying in the school's New York studio or studying abroad in Florence and/or London.


   In the fourth year:

Students also sign up for an advanced studio and select from a group of studios provided by famous architects as visiting critics. During the whole learning process, students often go to big cities for field visits, starting from the first year in New York.


      The fifth year:

The fifth and final year of the BARCH project focuses on design papers. Each student chooses his or her own research and method topics in order to implement a unique design. The thesis award is composed of professionals and professors, and the award-winning works of the thesis are reviewed.

A core part of our core is an intensive off campus summer experience in our Fisher Center in New York City or our three city Asian projects. Your architectural portfolio should include:


Briefly describe your interest in the field of architecture, 12-24 high-quality and latest copies of works of art, and the work will be evaluated according to skills, discipline and creativity. Works copied from photographs, magazines and masterpieces are not considered powerful material.

The Architecture Department of Syracuse University particularly encourages you to submit works from real life observation, such as still life paintings, figure paintings, portraits/self portraits and landscape paintings. Any cartoon works must be your original ideas, characters, etc., rather than derivative works of others. Art should show consideration of context and composition. Avoid "floating" shapes or objects.


   Other media


In addition to observational painting, works of other media, such as painting, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, photography, carpentry, sculpture, or any other visual media that shows your interest and talent in creative and graphic works, are encouraged.


Mechanical drawings and architectural drawings are unnecessary. If included, they should reflect design and creativity, not just technical skills. They will be assessed for their artistic value rather than manipulation of software. Remember, good design includes presentations and appropriate editing. The work must be original, not clip art.

   Collection and mailing of works


The material must be placed in black or white binder, no more than 10W × 13H × 1 / 2D. Transfer students, please use red or blue adhesive. Materials not placed in the adhesive will not be considered. Professional portfolios are not required, but accepted. Replicas should be of high quality. Slides and CDs are not acceptable. Do not send the original.

Programs that can be used to layout your digital works include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Scribus, Inkscape, and Apple Pages for Mac.
