Campus square puzzle garden reconstruction

-Puzzle Garden-

      Individual project of landscape design

This is a reconstruction project of the campus square. We hope that through the redesign of the campus square, it can be transformed into a more dynamic campus scene, attract students out of the classroom, and enhance mutual feelings through this landscape.

      Node analysis

Through the division of school building types, it is found that this area is located in the west side of the school library, the east side is the school gate, surrounded by teaching buildings, and is far away from student apartments and accommodation areas. This area is an important open school square and also the place where students flow most frequently.

      Moving line analysis

Through the dynamic analysis of student flow, it is found that this is an interesting node for students to switch classrooms during class. Through the observation of the scene, three important intersections with the most dense flow of people were identified.

Analysis of Problems in Campus Square Landscape Design and Scheme Planning

   A. Problem: chaotic flow of people

As the main teaching and living area is located in the northwest of the school, and this area is originally set with stairs, the crowd at the entrance and exit is aggravated, resulting in that the northwest side of the square will always be crowded during the peak hours of classes. When the crowd flow is large, accidents are more likely to occur.

   Landscape design Planning - smooth traffic line

Solve the problem of congestion through effective traffic line planning.

   B. Problem: The terrain is empty

The landscape suitability of the plot is poor, with a large area of hard pavement. Even if there is a large fountain in the center of the square, it is closed all the year round. Therefore, in most of the time, the square is just a place where students will walk, but it cannot guarantee that students can chat, rest or study here.

   Landscape design Planning - open view

Provide students with a place to rest and relax by adding landscape settings.

   C. Problem: lifeless campus construction

The architectural style of the whole school is serious, lacking a relaxed and lively atmosphere.

   Landscape design Planning - Attractive Landscape

By setting up a dynamic landscape on the nodes, the campus can be revitalized so that students are willing to go out of the classroom and get familiar with each other.

   Through interviews and surveys of students, we learned about their needs and expectations, and summarized the following suggestions:

1. Hope to add more places for communication

2. Add more green plant landscapes

3. Entertainment facilities that can relieve learning pressure

4. The site can be exposed to more light

Thinking Analysis of Campus Square Landscape Design Works

The key points are "nodes", "bridges", "more choices (possibilities)", "natural landscape", "landscape construction", "entertainment facilities", "spatial form", "attractive sites" and "more vitality".

      Design/scheme

Half of the space on the east side of the square will be reserved. The trees in the west will be arranged and planted to form a guide for guiding the flow of people. At the same time, some seats will be set for students to rest or bathe in the sun.

A relatively closed courtyard is added in the middle area to divide the function and space through the shape of Tetris. There are quiet rest areas on both sides of the courtyard, and a conference and leisure area with rich functions in the center of the courtyard; The mirror pool is placed in the center of the courtyard, which is the main landscape. There is a shop below the corridor to provide services for students who are resting.

        -Under bridge-

A relatively closed rest space is built with glass, creating a relatively quiet area. Students can enjoy the outside scenery through glass, which also facilitates indoor and outdoor communication, forming an interactive space.

        -Small theater-

An interesting sunken square is added in the middle part, with steps of different heights to provide different ways of rest, which can meet the needs of some small meetings and performances and make the space more dynamic.

        -Covered bridge-

The second floor connects people walking in the square through covered bridges, creating more communication opportunities for everyone in this way. The space on the upper and lower floors also adds more fun to the site, so that people can have different space and landscape experiences on the two floors.

      -Rest area-

This area has created seats of different shapes and sizes in the form of Tetris. People can rest, chat, sleep and bathe in the sun.

      historical background

Baoding is a famous city with a history of more than 3000 years. It is called "an important place around Beijing" and "the south gate of the capital". The city was built in the Warring States Period, has experienced thousands of years of changes and changes, and has a good foundation. So far, the city has shown different characteristics of the times and culture in each period.

      Node analysis

The investigation of the street shows that the place is surrounded by commercial and residential areas, and three historical buildings have been found on both sides of the street. By observing and classifying people's activities at the scene, we summarized five main forms of activities: morning exercises, tourism, markets, shopping, square dancing.

Through the analysis of the crowd around the site, it is found that Yuhua Road, as the main commercial street, has far more pedestrians than other nearby streets. Through traffic analysis, it is found that the daily flow of streets is also very large.

As the political center, the political status of Yuhua Road is also gradually declining. At the same time, with the increasingly severe commercialization of streets, the cultural atmosphere of the website is becoming weaker and weaker.

        Node problem

Traffic - as the main road and commercial street of the city, Yuhua Road fails to separate the flow of people and vehicles;

Environment - bicycles are in chaos on the street, and vendors set up some tables on the street. These facilities block the sidewalk, causing street chaos;

Cultural loss - In the process of urbanization, many old houses and buildings were demolished, and urban culture was gradually forgotten;

Protection of ancient buildings - ancient buildings are not well protected and covered by modern buildings and parking spaces;

        Renovation Plan of Rest Area of Landscape Design Works Collection

The reconstruction is carried out from the aspects of transportation (ground pedestrian street, underground parking lot), greening (surrounding facilities, street park, leisure place), culture (historical and cultural museum, historical theme square), and ancient buildings (city, historic site, new square).

        design scheme

-Transportation-

In terms of traffic, traffic chaos is caused by the combination of a large number of pedestrians and vehicles. So we chose to guide the fast cars into the underground to form a two-way lane. The upper part is regarded as a pedestrian street, which provides two-way lanes for public transport and bicycle traffic. There are also bicycle lanes to meet the needs of residents for fitness and cycling.

-Culture-

By combining different landscape elements and cultural elements, the theme square in the park can also contain different terrains, bringing different terrains and different landscape experiences.

Main landscape

The landscape wall is used to show the memory of ancient Baoding, and the semi sunken space can also create a sense of ritual;

Draw lessons from the construction methods of ancient buildings in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and use stone bricks and other materials to lay roof streets;

During the revolutionary period, sculptures were used to display some figures. The sinking space allowed the community park to enjoy a relatively private area;

Using the common green plants in Baoding to plant around can make people feel more comfortable and casual;

Landscape Design Works Collection Ecological Lake

-LIVING RIVER-

Ecological restoration of St. Charles Lake

Team project

The ST Charles River, one of Canada's main rivers, is too polluted to provide services for nearby residents. We have not only established a close relationship between rivers and residents, but also dealt with the problem of pollution.

Node analysis

Because the green space is far away, residents cannot relax nearby; Building a park on the site can easily provide services for nearby residents. The area is surrounded by residential areas, and there are many schools and business districts nearby.

Problems

Flood - St. Charles River has been affected by flood for a long time. The green lands on both banks of the river have been eroded by the flood, and the nearby residents are unable to pass;

Pollution --- Through investigation, it is found that St. Charles River is seriously polluted, the main source of pollution is domestic sewage, and the river has no self purification capacity;

Surrounding residents --- With the purification of the river, people's activities also change;

Solution

Clean water source - water becomes cleaner, people are more likely to have fun in water, which promotes the relationship between water and people;

Vegetation planting - trees, shrubs, perennial plants, etc;

Slum Issues and Urban Survey Guiding Urban Design

-NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE-

Team project

With the accelerating process of urbanization, "village in city" has become another common form of urban development. Although there are some problems, it is endowed with the power of spatial self-organization of internal order. This top-down force is exactly what our team hopes to explore and research. We hope that our survey and design process will involve many citizens, encourage them to further improve space institutions, and take the initiative to change their living environment, lifestyle and attitude.

Collection research Field analysis

   Building type

Yulin Second Lane, formerly a village, was built in the early 1980s. The current Yulin Second Lane was completed in 2005, which can be said to be a microcosm of modern high-rise buildings in Chengdu. East Yulin Street, built in 1998, is a residential area close to all facilities. With the development of the city, the area is now surrounded by the urban area and has become a "village in the city".

From the most modern urban center to the most secluded hutong, there are three types of buildings within one kilometer, which is only a 10 minute walk, but it seems that we have gone through 30 years.

Site visit

Through the investigation and recording of the roadways at different time points, it is found that the overall environment of the roadways is relatively good, which is conducive to gathering people and equipment layout. In addition, there are fewer residents in the roadway, which has little impact on the original residents.

A total of eight auxiliary models were built for investigation and placed in the Second Lane of Yulin for residents to experience.

Result analysis

The initial experimental results were quite different from the team's expectations. Since the experimental site was in the street, the team hoped to observe and investigate by observing the use of pedestrians and residents, but some residents directly moved the furniture made by the team to their homes. This led to the failure of initial research.

Based on the reflection of the first failure experience, the team modified the model. The size of the model was changed to 30cm × 30cm × 30cm, and a notice board was set up on the site to facilitate residents to use the equipment and attract more people to the site. It is hoped that the second design can bring benign activities to the residents.
