Emily Carr University obtained the right to grant a degree through an open learning institution in 1989, and was granted the right to offer a degree in its own name in 1994: Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual arts, general art or photography; Bachelor of Design in Communication Design or Industrial Design.
In 1995, it became Emily Carr College of Art and Design In 1997, he was granted the right to award a bachelor's degree in media arts. In 2006, the Master of Fine Arts Program of Emily Carr University received the first batch of students majoring in design, media and visual arts. In May 2008, Emily Carr University won the university status, which is now known as Emily Carr University of Art+Design (ECU).
