Emily Carr University obtained the right to grant a degree through an open learning institution in 1989, and was granted the right to offer a degree in its own name in 1994: Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual arts, general art or photography; Bachelor of Design in Communication Design or Industrial Design.

In 1995, it became Emily Carr College of Art and Design In 1997, he was granted the right to award a bachelor's degree in media arts. In 2006, the Master of Fine Arts Program of Emily Carr University received the first batch of students majoring in design, media and visual arts.
