Exclusive interview with the exclusive admissions officer: five years of Parsons' recruitment experience, Parsons' application for one-stop disclosure
Look at David's exclusive views on art study application, works collection, teaching, Parsons, fashion design, fashion industry!
"For students applying for fashion design this year, what experience would you like to share?"
I combine Parsons School of Design From the perspective of Parsons application and this course, we can tell you that the requirements for Parsons application portfolio are very special, because we do not give students special mandatory requirements, even for Parsons Challenge. What I want to tell you is that Parsons is set like this because we hope students can open themselves up as much as possible and let their ideas be expressed as much as possible.
Before the start of this course, I communicated with the teachers of the Natural Light Teaching and Research Center for many times and jointly customized this overseas alliance summer course+UCP interdisciplinary summer course.

David and Studio 2 students of this summer course
Because this year is not the first time that I have spent summer courses with Natural Light. I know that the purpose of Natural Light summer courses is to help students to enter the last stage of learning and improvement before applying. Because soon, the EA and ED in the United States will begin.
I have a particularly obvious feeling, especially at the beginning of the course, the students were confused. They were confused and slightly resistant to using paper, straw, wood and other materials.
I know that when it comes to "fashion design", students will directly associate with fabrics (fabrics), but in fact, this is not the case. So at the beginning of this summer class, I hope students can make full use of this opportunity. Because I will not only teach you structural fashion design, but also help them use tools to realize conceptual ideas.
So in the course, we always try to push these practical projects back to the initial stage of conceptual research to ensure that these ideas can be realized in later practice. I also recommend that you use this method in the process of creating a collection of works, which can help you to review your own works and enrich the expression of your ideas and personality in the collection of works.

Fashion 360 Ongoing
But I am very happy that, until the end of all our projects, the students saw that the inconspicuous paper can actually be designed and cut into clothes. I think in this process, they learned a lot about the relationship between structural design, clothing materials and human structure, and how to better combine them.
Because Parsons really attaches great importance to students' creativity and ideas when applying for studying abroad in fashion design, I hope students can find the importance of creativity through this summer course. I hope students can tell us "why?" and "I want to..." through their works. It is very important that they have strong style, expressive desire and clear and interesting ideas.
Rather than showing us a series of technical paintings, we would like to see a three-dimensional, lifelike "person" through the collection of works. This person is the student himself. They tell us with their works: I am such an artist, and my idea is xxxx.
Therefore, compared with those large-scale works, we hope that students' starting point is themselves, starting from themselves or the things and characters they are most familiar with. If you want to impress the admissions officer with your portfolio, first of all, you should put your true feelings and ideas into the portfolio.

"What is the purpose of the preparation of this summer program? Is it integrated with the Parsons application requirements you mentioned before?"
For me, I hope to pass this Portfolio training For the course, I will tell the students my ideas, my learning experience in Parsons, and my experience in enrollment review. Of course, we also combine the high standards of Parsons' application requirements. When we designed the curriculum framework for this summer course, there were no restrictions. Some students applied for graduate students, some applied for undergraduate students, and some had zero foundation.
For art schools, your creativity and ideas are actually very important. For example, in Parsons, we focus on students' personal ideas and their courage to express their ideas. At Parsons, we will provide students with highly practical design projects or internship opportunities. Taking clothing design as an example, we will not focus on mass production clothing and design. We hope that students will regard clothing as "art" or the carrier of "values".

So I hope you can focus on "creative ideas" in this course, which is also a discovery I have made through communication with many students. I know that in China, most students who study design have a very good foundation, especially painting ability. I often see paintings from Chinese students during enrollment review, as if they were printed works, It's amazing. However, their creativity is not necessarily, sometimes it will be relatively flat, without their own style.
Although Parsons also attaches great importance to basic painting ability and expression ability, we also value your ideas, because ideas are the way to support your expression. For example, in the first year of our painting class, students will also be required to express their creativity. This is the same as the natural light painting class, where students observe things, integrate their own ideas, and visually express.
I hope that through this course, students can improve their design. At the beginning, I will ask students to draw some design sketches on paper and deconstruct and reshape clothes. Students can use glue, dyes and other materials to create creatively. In this course, I did not require my students to have basic skills such as sewing, because I hope everyone can realize the importance of creativity.

Of course, in the long run, it is very necessary for students to learn these skills. But in the early stage of learning, students should not only cultivate their interest, but more importantly, they should start to try, get familiar with the materials, and through these "processes", learn about this major/discipline and develop their own ideas.
I was lucky to complete this course with several other designers, admissions officers, and professors. Each of us is responsible for a part of this course. We hope to help you connect a complete fashion circle logic, so as to help students understand fashion design, fashion design, and fashion industry.
On the first day of the course, I started with the Mood Board, and I gave you a hint of "organics". From this origin, we began to diverge our thinking and collect inspiration. Finally, students will return their ideas to a point and put them into fashion design.
Then the course is to guide students to use a kind of material to process and create. Students can independently use splicing, stacking and other methods. If the material is any material, such as paper, wood, plastic, etc., these materials are more challenging than cloth. I hope that students can challenge new creative methods through this attempt, Learn more about fashion design and know more about yourself.

"Do you have any experience and ideas for future development to share with you?"
I always think Parsons has provided me with a good platform and opportunity to obtain good education and teaching philosophy, which is the biggest help to me. This is inseparable from the excellent teaching environment and school education, but also includes my own independent learning. The school helps me develop my ability to seize opportunities, and my own efforts allow me to seize opportunities when they come.
In the Fashion 360 project, students were confused at the beginning, and they resisted using paper as a material to make clothes. At the end of the project, students saw that ordinary paper could be designed and cut, and finally made into clothes.

I think in this process, they learned a lot about the relationship between structural design, clothing materials and human structure, and how to better combine them. This is a change in the understanding of the major of fashion design itself.
In the final course, we brought fashion photography, fashion illustration and other contents to students. Because whether from the perspective of learning, practice and creation, or from the perspective of entering the fashion industry in the future, I think as long as you want to enter the fashion industry, the most important thing is to keep learning, and to be clear, there are many things you can do in the fashion field.

Many students come to the design institute to study with the goal of becoming a designer. In reality, they may find that there are not so many simple "designer" job opportunities in society.
However, compared with other fields, the most special thing about the fashion industry is that it is an industry with a large market, so in addition to "designers", there are many positions in the fashion industry waiting for students to find.
I suggest that students can combine their love of fashion with their actual work, which should provide opportunities from self-learning and design learning, participate in more internships, and integrate into the circle of fashion design, so as to find suitable work opportunities.

In this interview, David has been constantly emphasizing the importance of "creativity" and "self". In the application for art schools, unique and strong personal style and deep and thoughtful creativity have great attraction for art schools. But at the same time, as David said, students also need to pay attention to the mastery of basic creative literacy such as basic hands-on ability and painting ability. Complementarily balance their artistic and design literacy and comprehensive ability. In the above interview, it is not difficult to see that Parsons' application requirements attach importance to students' ability to put into practice.
