College Profile

Cranbrook Academy of Art The Cranbrook Academy of Art (CAA), also known as Kuangxi Academy of Arts, was founded in 1932 in the quiet suburb of Detroit, a well-known industrial city in the United States. It was co founded by George Bush, an American newspaper magnate, and Eli Shashinin, an architect from Finland. The Cranbrook Academy of Arts has created a new industrial design system with American style, known as the "cradle of modern American designers". There are about 140-170 graduate students in the school every year. The tuition is claimed to be the lowest in private schools of the same type in the United States, and it is famous for "guidance of artists in residence". Usnew ranked 5th in MFA in the United States in 2006, ranking very high. American Academy of Arts recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.

The faculty of Cranbrook School of Art is mainly composed of the architects of the old generation Chicago School in the United States. The famous architect Sullivan also taught here, and implemented his design concept of "form follows function" in teaching. Young Sarinin and Imus are both outstanding students who he believes have the most design talent. The college basically refers to the modern design education mode of Bauhaus in Germany, combines technology with art, and has established many design studios and practice factories, which can quickly produce the design plans of teachers and students.

Cranbrook College of the Arts in the United States has only graduate courses, which are small and professional. The university only grants master's degree in architecture and pure master's degree in art, and does not grant degrees in undergraduate related majors or degrees in continuing education projects.

Cranbrook Academy of Art is a small art professional college, located in Bloomfield Villa, the richest area on the outskirts of Grand Detroit, the once glorious automobile city. In 1932, it was jointly built by George Bush, an American newspaper magnate, and Eli Shashinin, an architect from Finland.

The Cranbrook School of Art is composed of ten departments, including architecture, design, ceramics, graphic design, metal technology, painting, photography, sculpture and anthropology. The courses offered by the Design Department include industrial design, interior system and furniture design, exhibition design, interior architecture, architectural design and methodology, visual and graphic design, packaging, environmental design analysis and theory, flower arrangement, photography, architecture, etc. The leading specialty is furniture design. Most of the current teachers are artists with rich practical experience, and students can also take courses in other departments. Experts in psychology, engineering, sociology, manufacturing technology, urban planning and design, computer and other fields are invited to hold lectures and guide students according to the topics selected by students. The school has a large art exhibition hall and art library. Bachelor and master degrees can be awarded. The professional fees of the school are moderate, which is in line with the affordability of most students; For applicants with excellent conditions, the school can also provide them with a certain proportion of scholarships or grants to help them successfully complete their studies.

The campus of Cranbrook in the United States is classical and exquisite, with teaching institutions ranging from preschool education to postgraduate training except universities. It is worth mentioning that the opening ceremony of the Graduate School's annual graduation exhibition is more gorgeous than the red carpet. At that time, there were many famous cars and costumes, in sharp contrast to the desolate downtown of Detroit.

2D Design

CRANBROOK's 2D ranking in the United States is very high, and its style of study is free. There are many applicants every year. However, if it passes the first stage, the second stage requires that you must go to school for an interview. However, if you have the opportunity to go there, you will not be disappointed. It is worth reading.

3D Design

The industrial design professionals are familiar with Cranbrook's 3D, which led the trend of product semantics in the 1980s and 1990s. Every book related to product semantics will mention the name of Cranbrook; After the 21st century, the whole institute has become more diversified, focusing on context and scenario, which means telling the story of the product. The designer is the writer who writes the story, and the user is the reader; Some people think that cranbrook is not suitable for foreign students to study, because there is no university department here, and no one teaches you to make models, 3d, and sketches. If you want to learn these, it is not a very suitable place. Once you come in, these things should have a certain level. This is not to scare everyone. On the contrary, if you are a foreign student, Coming to cranbrook is definitely the best school to graduate from (of course, the prerequisite is to be able to come in), but going out in the future may be very sad. I hope you can think more when you apply By the way, here are examples of students in spring, but last year the whole school only accepted one student in the spring class!

Undergraduate major

The university does not offer undergraduate courses for international students.

2D design discipline

In the United States, the ranking is very high, the style of study is free, and there are many applicants every year. Cranbrook's 2D graphic design major focuses on the comprehensive development of artistic concepts and design, involving traditional design (conveying the information of the third party to customers through design) and emerging design (the cutting-edge concept and practice that modern design institutions are exploring). The course focuses on experiment and exploration, and students will have design practice opportunities such as book and poster font design. In addition, there are art criticism courses to cultivate students' personal art appreciation, perspective and thinking.

The weekly course schedule includes studio study, group criticism, subject reading group, classroom criticism, guest professor lectures, meeting, and tutoring dinner prepared by Elliott Earls, the dean, for each student (once every two weeks)! This is real!

With a large number of artists and teachers and a good art learning atmosphere, it is a good choice to come here to read 2D graphic design.

3D Design

Students majoring in industrial design at Cranbrook College of Arts will not be unfamiliar with Cranbrook's 3d. Cranbrook's 3d led the trend of product semantics in the 1980s and 1990s. Every book related to product semantics will definitely mention the name of Cranbrook; After the 21st century, the trend of the whole institute has become more diverse. Focusing on context and scenario means telling the story of the product. The designer is the writer who writes the story, and the user is the reader.

Cranbrook's 3D design focuses on the 3D design of architecture and interior, such as architectural design, furniture design, interior decoration design, etc. The course focuses on students' personal practice. In the design case study, students and teachers question, design, make, and discuss together to become professional 3D designers.

Architecture

In the past 30 years, the major of architecture has shifted from training urban architectural designers to training designers who can design distinctive, outstanding and innovative buildings. The architectural curriculum of the college is specially arranged. There are no compulsory courses or elective courses. Instead, dialogue, communication and critical discussion are used. Students can develop their own architectural design characteristics with the guidance and help of professors.

The College recommends that students have undergraduate degrees in architecture.

Open class, including workshops, discussion rooms, corridors, and even tables in restaurants. The learning atmosphere is free and open, and students are encouraged to explore topics of interest. In addition, students' works will be displayed in the course to improve their own artistic cultivation under the appreciation and discussion of teachers' classmates. Each semester, more than 6 visiting professors of the major will give lectures to the college, so that students can get in touch with the latest ceramic knowledge and concepts. The college also has the world's leading ceramic production equipment and professional studios.

Fiber Art

Fiber Art Design As a branch of textiles, fiber art aims to guide students to explore the knowledge and skills of fiber art in materials, art organization forms, and finished product production. The course forms include criticism, seminar discussion, project research, tourism, lectures and conferences of visiting professors, etc.

In recent years, the school has built a new studio building. In the building, each student has a personal fiber studio. There are textile machines, photographic video equipment and other electric and manual equipment. Students have ample opportunities to practice and apply knowledge.

Metal Arts

The metal art major of the college aims to guide students to overthrow the traditional design and use methods and concepts of metal materials and metal products, and encourage students to innovate in metal product design of metal materials.

The professional equipment is very powerful, including ordinary lathe, vertical milling machine, vertical band saw, and two drilling machines. The 10000 square foot large studio and the 120 square foot personal studio allow students to have a lot of learning and practice opportunities. Artist teachers in school will establish a close relationship with students and give them guidance.

Painting

The school's painting specialty has broken through the original boundaries of painting, not only focusing on painting brushes, handicrafts and general art themes, but also focusing on other contents of society, art, aesthetics and other art media, including photography, print reproduction, etc.

The curriculum is open and free, and the school encourages students to explore. Most of the school teachers are the leading figures in painting. They establish close teacher-student relationship with students to help them solve their doubts and guide them. The school has outstanding equipment. The studio is open to students 24 hours a day. There are also galleries, computer studios and large conference rooms. The school organizes students to visit various art museums, galleries and artist studios in New York every year.

Photography

The major aims to cultivate non-traditional and interdisciplinary photography talents. With critical teaching, students and teachers explore together to cultivate students' ability to evaluate and appreciate photographic works, and then have the ability to shoot unique and artistic works.

The professional facilities are strong. Each student is assigned with a photography studio, digital and positive pressure laboratories, the latest adobe equipment suite, Apple computers, and so on. This major enrolls 15 people every year.

Print Media

This major has a long history and was once the printing department of the Voice of Democracy, providing a channel for the expression of popular democratic ideas. Now, it focuses on the innovation of traditional new print media, and has evolved into a major to cultivate interdisciplinary and multi method artistic creation talents.

College facilities: The specialty is located in the administrative building, covering two floors, equipped with students' semi private studios, plus computer studios, water-based screen printing, intaglio and relief printing processing equipment, giving students the best academic and practical conditions.

Sculpture

Working learning is the main way of learning sculpture in Cranbrook. Students will discuss, learn and make progress together with teachers. In addition, there are some reading and writing contents in the course.

Application Experience

Application guide of Cranbrook Academy of Arts:

1. The art study abroad collection mainly depends on the design you have done before. If you want to apply for a design major, the collection is very important, even more important than the TOEFL GRE. I think you have taken the GRE exam. It is estimated that you are a design graduate student who intends to make progress in the United States. This collection of works is mainly based on your Idea to understand your design potential and basic abilities (hand drawing, modeling, 3D modeling, etc.). The collection of works is the most important factor in applying for scholarships, even better than G/T scores.

2. There should be about 5 projects in the collection of industrial design professional works, not too many, but must be selected. These works can show your advantages in different aspects. (For example, the first work shows your research ability, the second shows your 3D modeling ability, the third shows your graphic design ability, the fourth shows your team cooperation ability, and so on) Industrial design direction should be better with more 3D works. Here I highly recommend the physical model made. As for the physical model, it can be made by hand or 3D printing, The key is to do as well as possible.
